  Before she could start to protest, the control column disappeared into the floor and the two aliens turned around.   There was a pause. Dan spoke next.

  “You are on a very strange mission, Gaia.” He nodded thoughtfully as he continued.

  “I think you girls are off-mission, am I right?” Aurelia could now pick up a worried thought pattern from Dan, she caught fragments. It sounded like please say yes.

  “If you are kidnapping all these people, Dan included,” Aurelia continued, “Why do you bring him back but not the others? That's, that's murder! Genocide!” She felt her fists clenching again.

  This elicited a strange response from the two aliens. Their telepathic signals were full of white noise and a melancholy filled the two humans. Dan slumped into a curved white seat and Aurelia felt a huge wave of sadness wash over her. Gaia's eyes paled and a cloudy pattern flitted over them, like a flock of birds on a bright sunny day.

  We do not want to hurt

  Said Lithia, the other one. And she was hugging herself as she did so.

  Our mission is to fetch men from Earth

  We are equipped to help them and ease them through the process

  Most of them are compatible with the Breeder

  Aurelia glanced across to Dan. He grimaced a little in memory. Lithia continued.

  These ones that are not compatible

  We cannot return these back to Earth.

  Our race has become complicated

  Dan frowned at this. There was something else? The Higher?

  Our mission is to save the human race

  Lithia said suddenly.

  The Higher is trying to breed human hybrids

  That possess only enlightened thought processes

  It is the intention that man will no longer fight with his fellow man

  He will eventually become one with the Higher

  This process is in it's infancy.

  She went on. Dan and Aurelia were listening to every word now, spellbound.

  The Breeder is assimilating the genetic resources

  Even now on Earth there are first generations walking amongst you.

  Aurelia stood up and walked to the giant window, trying to take it all in. It was a noble idea, she supposed, a pretty neat solution to ending wars, starvation and general schism. But at what cost? Did we change into something else? Was that right?

  Gaia had picked up Aurelia's confused thoughts for she replied, standing just behind her.

  We are right to question it.

  We have and we find no redemption in the plan

  Man's destiny should be his own

  We are bred to have a hive mind

  But some of us retained a part of the human gene

  We began to grow an individuality

  Lithia and I suppress this from our people

  But the Higher will..

  She shook her head and could not continue.

  “The Higher will find out. And destroy you?” Aurelia whispered.

  Aurelia found herself feeling immensely sorry for these creatures. Stuck with the task of playing God with another race, some of them evidently were railing against their system and putting themselves in danger.

  When they were alone, Dan and Aurelia sat and gazed through the window at the stars and endless gulf of space that stretched before them.

  “Do you know why they must have sex?” She asked suddenly. Dan risked a sideways glance at her but she was staring into the unknown.

  “I think I know. They can't reproduce, right? They told me that in their thoughts.” She sighed. “They are really sad about that, that there is not a natural process. So that tells me that they used to be able to. But something took them over, the Higher or whatever that is.”

  “Maybe they just like it!” Said Dan grinning. This time she was staring at him. He canned the grin.

  “Sure they like it,” she fixed him with a stare, but inside she remembered what she had enjoyed with him just before their sudden departure.

  “I think they need it,” she went on, “to cater for that small human part, that bit that is still there.”

  There is another thing

  Lithia surprised them as she entered the room.

  Since we have no need for reproduction any more our male species is no more.

  Gaia followed her.

  They are simply drone workers

  Aurelia stared open mouthed in amazement. Well at least evolution has ironed out all that small talk and politics, she thought. Just get right on in there, won't you darling!

  With that the alien's both touched their cheekbone's where a large reddish jewel like protrusion sat. Their suits to peel back automatically from their heads, leaving their shoulders and withdrawing back over their breasts. Soon they had melted away to nothing. They stood there towering and demure at the same time, their skin a perfect blue. Aurelia found her cheeks growing hot.
