The Well of Prayers

My head of school, Petra Pajtas, has given me space and time and a steady paycheck while I work out how to manage the alternate realities of teaching and novel writing.
My coworkers, particularly the world’s greatest English department, inspire me every day and endure my creative messes. Sorry about that.
I am forever indebted to my agent, Regina Brooks, for talking me off the ledge when things get hairy and for her nonstop optimism.
My editor, Nicole Frail, once again led a crackerjack team at Sky Pony to put together the book of my dreams. Big high fives to Joshua Barnaby, Rain Saukas, Nicole Mele, and Kiley Wellendorf, for making it all seem easy.
Not every writer has their own personal SWAT team to raid their worst writing excesses and make short work of clichés and limp prose. My critique group—Tanita Davis, Sarah Stevenson, Kelly Herold, Sara Lewis Holmes, and David Elzey—save me from certain humiliation time and again.
As I write this, my husband is away on a business trip. I had to break the news to him via email that I actually ate broccoli today without wincing or holding my nose, perhaps for the first time in my entire life. Thank you, honey, for believing that miracles do happen, even this one.
