“No, Brad, we didn’t — but why would you care if we did? And Lisa really shouldn’t care. And speaking about her, it’s obvious that you haven’t talked to her about ending your relationship with her. I thought you were coming here alone.”

“Listen, I’m sorry about that, okay? When I told her I was coming here after the game, she wanted to come with me because she said she hadn’t been here in months and felt the mood to wanna dance and whatever. I didn’t even have time to call you or text you to let you know.”

“You could’ve made time, Brad. I wore this outfit for you,” I said while I looked down at the floor.

He smiled. “Thank you. You look sexy — love the way your tits look in that top — I was gonna tell you how gorgeous you looked later.”

I grinned. “Thanks. But do you think Lisa could know something about us? Look at the way she was questioning me about my earrings — I feel that she knows about us, Brad, she’s just not saying anything.”

“She doesn’t know shit, Vanessa, okay? Relax, baby.”

“I’ll be able to relax if you two weren’t kissing and holding each other in front of me.”

“Vanessa, I can’t stop being affectionate towards her all the time when you’re around, otherwise she will start to suspect something.”

“Oh, okay. So you can’t stop doing that for me but you don’t want me to see other guys? Especially John, again?”

“I prefer you not to. And do you wanna start seeing John again?”

“Brad, you’re still with her. It’s only been a few days, I know, but you’re already getting mad at seeing me with someone else. And no, I don’t wanna start seeing John again. I was thinking about ending the relationship I had with him way before we started seeing each other, and I told you that.”

He nodded. “And I believe you.” He looked around the club to see if Lisa was anywhere in sight, and then looked at me. “I’m not getting mad and I won’t if you see other guys — I just prefer them not to be John or any of my friends, and you understand why. Look, I still wanna see you and I just don’t want you getting serious about another guy while I’m still with Lisa. I mean, if Lisa and I end things sooner than I think and you are now serious about someone else, then where will that leave me?”

  “Brad, that’s not gonna happen.”

  “How do I know that?”

“Trust me, it’s not going to,” I assured him, and then looked around to see if anyone saw us talking like this, especially Lisa and John.

He looked at me. “Is something else wrong besides me bringing Lisa here tonight? Because I noticed the way you stormed off from John while dancing with him.”

I knew he noticed what had happened, but I didn’t wanna say anything about it to him right now. “No, nothing. He just got on my nerves like the way he always does, that’s why I’m not in a secret relationship with him anymore. Look, let’s get back to everyone because they will start getting suspicious if we’re both gone for too long, especially Lisa and John. I’m gonna go to the bathroom — you go on.”

  “Wait,” he said.

I looked at him. “What is it?”

“About you pulling your panties out at the table earlier,” he said with a slight grin.

I sighed. “I knew this shit was coming. What about it?”

  “Was it really an accident?”

“What?! Yeah, it was! Brad, why the hell would I do something like that on purpose? Only a slut who starves for attention would do something like that and pretend that it was an accident — I’m not a pretender or a slut,” I said, even though I did feel like a slut since I was seeing another girl’s boyfriend in secret, because I had to think of how I would feel about me if I was Lisa. “Couldn’t you tell that I was really embarrassed about it? If running off from the table wasn’t any indication?”

He nodded as he grinned. “I believe you, Vanessa. But I just knew you put them back on last night after we had sex in my car here; I remember pinching your butt after you did.”

I didn’t know what to say because he was right, I did put them back on. “I thought I did, too, but obviously I didn’t and forgot to take them out of my purse since I didn’t change purses. After this embarrassment, I’ll definitely remember to put my panties back on after I have sex no matter how pressed I am for time.”

“What do you mean pressed for time?” he asked.

Fuck! I thought. I didn’t even realize what I’d said since I was thinking about when I was with John last night in his car and wanting to get home. “You know, about us getting back in here since we were outside in the parking lot. I wanted to make the most of the night with you since I wanted to leave early since I was tired. As much as I like having sex in your car with you, I also wanted to dance with you some more in here last night.”

He nodded at me with a smile, but I had a feeling that he wasn’t buying what I’d said. “Well, let me get back to Lisa before she starts searching this club for me.” He looked both ways first, and then leaned down and kissed me on the lips. He walked back to the table.

Minutes later, I walked back to the table and saw Ava and Marc talking, and Ken had found a girl to dance with. I had no idea where John was. Brad was also once again out on the floor dancing with Lisa. I couldn’t help but get heated up again despite me talking to him minutes before. “Hey,” I said to Ava as I sat back down. She kicked me under the table and grinned at me since she knew I was talking to Brad.

Brad, Lisa, and Ken came back to the table. Brad sat down and Lisa sat on his lap. They began kissing again.

“You two, get a room if you wanna do all that,” Ken suggested.

  Everyone laughed but me.

“I’m having so much fun here tonight! I forgot how good the music really is!” Lisa said as she looked into her bag and pulled out her compact mirror.

“It’s like this almost all the time that’s why we come here as much as we do,” Ava said.

“I see why now,” Lisa said as she powdered her face. She put away her compact. Another song came on. “Oh! I love this song!” She tried to pull Brad up, but he refused. She went out to the dance floor by herself.

I watched her as she headed up to the stage and stood right at the front of it in the middle. “I’m going to the bathroom,” I told Ava, and then got up and headed in the opposite direction of the dance floor towards the bathroom. Ava followed me. I didn’t go into the bathroom because I really didn’t have to go, so I just stood outside of it with my head down and my arms crossed in front of me.

“Vanessa, what’s wrong now?” Ava asked.

“I just don’t like Lisa being here,” I honestly replied. “And John being here doesn’t make it any better.”

“I didn’t expect to see John, either, but he is one of Brad’s good friends, but it was a surprise that Brad showed here with Lisa. Did he tell you why he brought her?”

“He said she wanted to come when he told her that this was where he was coming and that she hadn’t been here in so long and was excited about coming here — some shit like that.”

“He could’ve told her that he was going somewhere else.”

“Yeah, I know he could’ve — I thought about that, too, but no matter where he told her that he was going, she would’ve wanted to come with him.”

“That’s true,” she said. She grabbed my hand. “Come on, let’s go out to the floor and dance.”

“Okay,” I said with a sigh.

As we walked towards the dance floor, I noticed that John was on his phone as he stood off at a distance from where most were. It was as if he was trying to distance himself from everyone, and since the music was so loud it was very hard to hear someone speak, let alone be talking on a phone. I watched him as he yelled in anger at whoever he was talking to, and since I was too far away and the music was loud, I didn’t hear what he was saying, but the way he was yelling had said it all. This was about the third time I’d seen him on his phone or saw him look at his phone and become instantly upset.
I knew that it was none of my business, but it did have me wondering who it was that he seemed to always be upset with besides me since I’d ended our secret relationship. I knew that he was involved with someone else besides me since Brad found that lipgloss that wasn’t mine in his car, so I wondered if that was who he was talking to.

Ava led me through the crowd and then up on the crowded stage since the dance floor was overcrowded. Lisa was still out in the front of the stage dancing, and Ava and I were about two feet in back of her. I could barely dance since there were so many people. I looked down at Brad and he was immersed in a conversation with Marc and Ken. My adrenaline was going, and I was not in a good mood because I felt that Lisa had ruined my night, not to mention John feeling my leg up like he was gonna get some from me later like what I reluctantly gave him last night. And I still felt that he was quite possibly the one who’s been sending me the secret texts and if it was him, I didn’t expect for him to admit it to me, but sooner or later, he was gonna have to. I was also still very embarrassed about pulling out my panties at the table in front of everyone, and I was still mad at Brad in a lot of ways because I felt that he could’ve done more to not have Lisa come here with him. But I knew, though, that this was the kind of shit that I had to put up with when it came to being in a secret relationship with someone who was openly with someone else and had been for years.

“Wouldn’t it be funny if she fell off the stage because she was dancing so hard?” Ava jokingly said, referring to Lisa.

But I didn’t find this to be a joke. As vicious as it sounded, I really wanted it to happen. “Yeah, it would be,” I agreed. My adrenaline pumped harder.

She looked at me with a mischievous grin. “Wanna push her off?” she asked me in a joking way. “She won’t get hurt if you do; someone down there will break her fall. You want her to leave, don’t you?”

I started dancing harder as the flow of my adrenaline pumped harder than it’s ever had. I did want her to leave because I felt that it was her fault that my night was ruined. “Watch this,” I said to Ava. I extended my hand towards Lisa’s back and gave her one big push!

Lisa flew off the stage and onto a person below!

Just as Ava said, someone — who happened to be a guy over six-feet tall — broke her fall. He helped her up off the floor, and he didn’t appear hurt but surprised as he asked Lisa was she okay as he looked up at the stage to see what happened. Everyone in that area of the stage stopped dancing, including people dancing in the front of the stage where Lisa was at.

“Holy shit, Vanessa! Let’s get out of here!” Ava said in shock, and then grabbed my arm fast as we tried to get off the stage.

Suddenly, a guy grabbed my other arm as I was about to go down the steps! “IT WAS HER! SHE’S THE ONE WHO DID IT!” he yelled in a sloppy, drunken voice.

I violently jerked my arm away from him! “FUCK OFF, JERK! I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!” I yelled. I don’t believe anyone heard this guy say that I was the one who pushed Lisa off the stage since the music was so loud.

Ava and I went around the opposite way back to our seats. We peeked around the corner to see what was going on. Brad was on the floor helping Lisa off of it as Marc, John, and Ken were all standing in front of the table. Brad walked her over to the table as she had her arms wrapped all over him as if she was sooo hurt, and she sat down at the table as she cried.

After a few minutes, Ava and I decided to go back over to the table.

“Oh, my God, Lisa! What happened?” Ava asked.

“Someone pushed me off the stage — I don’t understand,” Lisa replied as she wiped her eyes.

“Were you two up on the stage?” Brad asked.

“No, we were standing outside of the bathroom talking — we didn’t see a thing,” Ava lied.

Brad looked at me; I tried to show concern.

“It just happened so fast. I don’t know if it was an intentional push or not, but for some reason, I think it was because I could feel a hand right on my back,” Lisa said.

“Damn! Who would do some shit like that?!” Marc asked.

“I don’t know. I’m not hurt; just shaken is all,” Lisa said while she held on to Brad as if she was dying.

“C’mon, we’re outta here,” Brad said to Lisa. He turned to Ava and me. “See you ladies on Monday.” He then helped Lisa up.

  “Bye,” Lisa said to us.

  “Bye,” Ava and I replied.

Marc, John, and Ken also decided to leave. As they all walked towards the entrance of the club, I noticed that the guy who grabbed my arm started to follow them. I jumped up and began to follow them as well to see if this guy was gonna tell them that it was me who pushed Lisa off the stage. He stopped short of the door when they left out of it. I came back over to the table and sat down. Now it was just Ava and me once again.

She looked at me. “Vanessa, what has come over you? You know I was just kidding when I said about pushing her off the stage! I didn’t think you were really gonna fuckin’ do it!”

I sighed. “Yes, Ava, I know, okay? I just don’t know what the fuck is wrong with me. That was so unlike me to do something like that. It just goes to show you how crazy I’m becoming already about seeing Brad and Lisa together after Brad and I started secretly seeing each other.”

“Well, we all have it in us. Do you think Brad suspects that it was you?”

“I don’t think so,” I said, even though deep down inside I wasn’t so sure. “You told him we were talking by the bathroom and we didn’t see a thing. Besides, it was so crowded up there that you couldn’t tell who was on stage. I looked down at Brad and he was talking to Marc and Ken; I don’t think he once looked up there but if he did, he certainly didn’t see us.”

“Yeah, it was crowded up there. But Vanessa, that drunk dude saw you!”

“He can’t prove that I did it, now can he? Besides, no one would’ve believed his drunk ass, anyway. You could smell the cheap alcohol on his breath — I was about to throw up — how credible is he?”

“True, he couldn’t prove it, but I have to admit that you did it so fast I didn’t think anyone saw it!”

I nodded as I looked at my watch; it was only ten o’clock but I wanted to leave now. “Let’s go. I don’t feel like staying here anymore.” I handed her my keys. “You drive us home; I’m just too upset still.”

“Okay, let’s go,” she said. She put her arm around me as we walked out of the club.

I opened up the passenger’s side door and got in, as Ava got in on the driver’s side. I gasped as there was a single red rose sitting in my car’s vase! “WHAT THE FUCK!” I yelled.

“What?!” Ava asked, as she was startled by me yelling.

“Where the fuck did that rose come from?! It wasn’t sitting in my vase when we left my house to come here!”

“It wasn’t? I didn’t even notice,” Ava said.

“No! It wasn’t! Someone got into my car and put it in here! And I know exactly who it was! John!”

She looked at me. “How do you know?”

“Because he used to always give me a single red rose when we were secretly seeing each other, I told you that. But it’s obvious that he hasn’t been able to accept that we’re not seeing each other in secret anymore, even though it’s only been a full day that we haven’t. And just when I thought that he wasn’t the one behind the secret texts. If he’s not behind the texts, then he’s definitely behind this rose!”

“Well, the only way you’re gonna know that, Vanessa, is to ask him.”

  “Oh, and I will!”

As Ava drove me home, I continued to stare out the window and at the rose off and on as I was slumped down in my seat.

“You know, Vanessa? Maybe you should take a break from Brad already.”

“I was thinking about doing that. I’m just so stressed, Ava, about everything.”

“I know, Vanessa. We all have things that we’re stressed out about, and it’s how we handle the stress t
hat we have that shows what kind of person we really are. I don’t think you would’ve put yourself in any situation that you couldn’t handle no matter how stressful it is for you.”

I smiled. “Thanks, Ava. But I have to admit that I didn’t have to be in secret relationship with John and Brad, and then dumping the one that I was in with John to stay in the one with Brad. I admit that this is undue stress, but like you said, I would not have gotten myself into it if I didn’t think that I could handle it.”

“Exactly. But Vanessa, I still can’t believe you pushed Lisa off the stage — sorry I keep bringing it up.”

I sighed. “I know, Ava. It’s something that I should not have done, but I can’t stand seeing Brad and her being intimate in front of me and I told him that.”

“Well, that’s to be expected, Vanessa — they’re still together.”

“I still don’t wanna fuckin’ see it, though! They didn’t have to do it as much as they were doing it tonight. I felt as if she was doing it on purpose, you know, making me jealous . . . and I was.”

“I doubt that, Vanessa. You know they’re always at it like that at school,” she said, as she pulled into my driveway.

“Yes, I know — don’t remind me,” I said. I snatched the rose out of the vase, and then pressed the button to open up the garage door.

We got out of the car.

“Vanessa, go inside and get some rest. I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” she said, and then walked to her car.

“Okay,” I said. I walked inside the garage, and dumped the rose inside the garbage can. I closed the garage door, and then walked inside the house and I saw the den light on and my dad sitting in it going through bills.

“Hi, honey,” he said to me.

“Hi,” I said with a smile as I went up the stairs to my bedroom.

I locked my door and then changed out of my clothes and into my pajamas. Then, I stared at my phone. I wanted to text Brad to see how Lisa was doing, but I didn’t want him to suspect me of doing it. I didn’t think that he suspected me because of what Ava had told him. I was surprised at myself for what I’d done, and knew that I probably wouldn’t be able to face Lisa for some time because of it. If doing things like this to Lisa was gonna start becoming an unfortunate habit of mine, then I had to wonder if me seeing Brad secretly was really worth it after all.
