Hatch smiled and nodded toward the TV. “That’s your doing. Isn’t it, Drew?”
A deep feeling of satisfaction went through him. “I had some help from Ian and Case. They were more than happy to tip off the FBI about Jase Calloway’s side business. They don’t like people selling black-market arms over the Internet. He’s going down for years. And they found what he’d been blackmailing her with. Apparently he’d been smart enough to dupe the burn file. They found the confessions of everyone. The official cause of our father’s and Francine’s deaths has been changed to homicide.”
He could rest. His father’s name had been restored. They’d buried Iris only the day before. He knew he hadn’t had to do it, but somehow he knew he would regret it if he didn’t.
He’d learned something from his soon-to-be wife. It wasn’t merely taking out his enemies that made him strong. Being better than them was the best revenge of all.
His mother couldn’t break him. The system couldn’t break him. He’d finally figured that out. He’d finally figured out that he was worth saving, too. And thank God his savior had come in such a delicious package.
Shelby walked into the room, a huge smile on her face. “Did you hear the news?”
His girl was always well informed. He nodded to the TV. “We’re watching it.”
“Are they going to come for me?” Noah asked.
Hatch snorted. “Hell no, son. Do you honestly believe your brother would allow that to happen?”
Noah sat back and relaxed a little. “No. Drew wouldn’t let anything bad happen. But I think I might take a break from coding for a while. I think I’m going to study law in school. You can always use another lawyer, right?”
“Of course, he can,” Shelby said as she crossed the space between them. “He gets into a lot of trouble.”
“I don’t anymore.” He slid an arm around her, and his whole body seemed to relax at the contact. He always wanted to touch her. It was the little things that he really loved. Waking up with her. Teasing her. Being teased by her. He didn’t mind at all when she called him her hot nerd. It was a good thing to be. “I’m going to be perfectly boring from now on. We’ve got the launch in a few weeks, and then we’re all going to head out to the island. A family vacation before Noah has to hit the books and Mia’s too pregnant to fly comfortably.”
He would be surrounded by his family, enjoying the days. He wouldn’t think about the past because he’d finally found his future.
“I will be more than happy to see the exit door to this hospital,” Hatch complained.
His door opened again, and Riley and Ellie walked through.
“Is he complaining again?” Riley groused. “I managed to get him a ridiculously oversized suite. Do you have any idea how much this is costing us?”
“A good reason to take me home,” Hatch shot back. “And get me a couple of nice nurses. I’ll take a blonde and a redhead.”
Ellie rolled her eyes. “I will pick out the nurses myself.”
Shelby held up a hand. “Carly and I will help.”
Drew took the seat next to Noah. Any minute now Bran would walk in with Carly, and Mia and Case would show up, and it would be complete chaos.
And that was just how he liked it.
He looked at Shelby. What she didn’t know was she wasn’t going to leave that island paradise as Shelby Gates. He was getting her out there and keeping her until she agreed to marry him. He’d planned the whole thing. A beach wedding and then a reception under the moonlight.
She didn’t suspect a thing.
He was good at plotting. It came naturally, but he’d decided plotting was so much better when the goal was to make her smile.
The door opened again and happy chaos reigned.
He let it flow around him, perfectly happy because his family was finally whole.
