My heart sank at that news. Frankie and Enzo had been working tirelessly to try and hunt Nicoli down ever since Sloan had told us the truth about who he was. Papa was still afraid to believe it was true, but he hadn’t done a thing to stop the hunt which was as close to his approval as we would get. We just wanted our brother home. We wanted our family to have a chance to heal. But ever since that day out on Inverno Bridge, we hadn’t seen hide nor hair of him.

He’d made sure that Sloan was alright and then I’d taken him to get help for his gunshot wound from the Calabresi doctor. We’d left him there so that I could get Sloan to the hospital and we knew he’d been treated - it sounded like he’d survived the bullet just fine. But no one had heard a single word from him since. He was like a ghost. And his absence was cutting us deep.

“We’ll find him,” Frankie swore. “I’ll let you know when I get another lead.”

  “Okay.”

The sound of soft cries came from the bedroom and I pushed away from the edge of the balcony as I cut the call.

Sloan rolled over in our bed as she heard River stirring too but I got there first, sweeping our tiny baby up into my arms and holding her close to my bare chest. Coco eyed me from his bed across the room, cocking his head. The little bastardo had warmed to me rather quickly since I’d started feeding him some of Sloan’s meatballs on the sly. And maybe I’d warmed to him too.

I wound a soft blanket around my girl and slipped back out onto the balcony as I bounced her softly and she snuggled in close, listening to my heartbeat.

I started singing beneath my breath, a song I created just for her about warrior women and an endless winter.

She nestled against me as her cries settled down and I continued to cradle her close.

“You know, babies usually cry in the night because they’re looking for milk,” Sloan teased from behind me and I turned to find her standing in the open doorway wearing my blue shirt.

“River cries for her papa to sing to her,” I objected. “She needs a cuddle with me more than milk.”

Sloan rolled her eyes and padded towards us, winding her arms around my waist so that our baby girl was cradled between us.

I leaned forward and pressed a kiss to the top of her head, inhaling the sweet scent of her as our little family were united as one.

“I think I’m the luckiest man that ever lived,” I breathed.

“You say that every day,” Sloan teased as she tipped her head back to offer me her lips.

“That’s because it’s even more true today than it was yesterday.”

She laughed and I kissed her to steal her happiness. I lost myself in the fullness of her lips and the passion of her love for a long moment and I couldn’t help but grin as she pulled me closer.

We moved back into our bedroom and returned River to her crib where she nestled back down with a happy murmur.

“Do you need to sleep?” I asked as I turned back to Sloan.

“No,” she purred, unhooking the buttons of the shirt she wore. “I think I need you to remind me just how lucky I am too.”

I smiled like a hungry wolf as I stalked towards her, turning her away from the bed and walking her back out onto the balcony instead.

If I was going to be challenged like that, then we’d be needing a closed door between us and the sleeping baby. Because if Sloan Romero wanted me to do something for her then I’d move mountains to make her wishes come true. That meant she was about to be screaming my name until she could barely remember her own. And I was about to bathe in the joy of her love until it banished every shadow that lurked in my soul.
