For Crying Out Loud

Page 21

by Cathie Wayland

Now, with our feet propped up on the railing, we gazed out across the quiet golf course, where no golfers or carts marred the landscape. It was like a piece of heaven on earth, this bit of muted landscape, cupped in the green hands of palmettos and live oaks, complete with a darkening blue backdrop. We sighed in tandem.

  “This is nice,” Bernie said.

  “Oh, yeah.”

  “Look at that sunset.”

  “Yeah.” I sighed again.

Then we both sat up and squinted at the horizon. We turned to look at one another and then back again at the extraordinary vista before us.

At the farthest end of the course, practically obscured by the palmettos and Spanish moss, almost hidden in the deepening shadows, a long, fat, dark gray-green reptile crawled out of the lagoon and lumbered across the golf course.

Bernie groaned, shifted in her chair, glanced at me and lifted both hands in surrender. I leaned back in my chair, smacked my lips and beamed. “Soooo, dearest of dear chums, what do you have to say to that?” I put my feet back on the railing and folded my hands on my unshackled chest.

Bernie inhaled, exhaled, then drawled, “For crying out loud…”
