“Alex,” she didn’t recognize her own voice! “Please, please make me yours.” She opened herself to him, dying to have him inside her.

“I love you,” he whispered as he arched and thrust deep inside her.

Wrapping her legs around his hips, she was in sync with him. Nothing could have prepared her for the wonderful tension. Kai grabbed his ass and pulled him hard inside her, demanding more action. Alex complied, sliding his knees under her and angled her hips to take him in deeper. Kai clung to him as he stroked the fires hotter, burning them both with the flames. Warmth rippled along her skin, meeting the explosion as her release took her over the edge. A strangled cry of delight lodged in her throat as she fought to be quiet and not alert the whole house to her rapture. Alex wasn’t as inclined as he arched his head back, shouting as his body shuddered as his hot seed spilled inside her. She clung to him, and he held her closer to his thundering heart. Shaken to her very core, Kai pressed her forehead to his, listening to the sound of his heavy breathing, winded by what they shared.

“Alex,” she asked in awe, “is it like this every time?”

Grinning, Alex replied, “Baby, I have never experienced anything as good as being in your arms.”

“I wouldn’t say no to another round,” she whispered. Sapphire-blue eyes darkened, watching him hungrily.

“Dammit, woman, if you keep looking at me like that we won’t be going anywhere, and I need to feed.”

Disappointed when he rolled off and lay on his back, she shrugged. “I get it.” She jumped off the bed and pulled out of the dresser the black bra and underwear she’d purchased, and said over her shoulder as she dressed, “I understand if a man as old as you can’t perform like you use to.”

“Oh, really? Shall we put your theory to the test?” He stalked her, eyeing her as she moved away, keeping a wary distance from him. “What? Afraid of the big, bad wolf, little girl?”

Placing a staying hand out, Kai struggled to keep from laughing. “No, sir. Wolves are not in the least intimidating to me.”

“Really. Mayhap you haven’t met the right one.” A soft growl rumbled in his throat as he sped to take her in his arms, finding only empty space. “What the hell?”

Appearing next to the bathroom door, Kai wiggled a finger at him. “Now, now, Mister Wulf, you said you were hungry.”

“I am.” In a flash, he had Kai in his arms, fastening his mouth over hers, deepening the kiss in savage hunger.

She kissed him tenderly, running her fingers over the contours of his cheek, down the rasp of whiskers. “Alex, you really need to shave.”

Running a hand over his face, issuing a rasping sound as it came in contact with the stubble. He gave her a rueful half-smile. “I’ll take care of it immediately.”

It never seized to amaze her what vampires could do as she watched the dark stubble vanish and Alex was bare faced and heart-stopping gorgeous again.

“Want to shower again before we head out to the club?” he asked as he released her.

“No, I’m fine,” she replied as she went into the bathroom and pulled on pair of leather pants, a white, ‘v’ neck, tee-shirt.

A sharp rap on the door had Alex yanking on his clothes, grabbing his gun and tossing hers to her. In the bathroom, she held it positioned and ready to fire if they were attacked.

Alex stepped to the side of door, out of line of fire from the other side. “Who is it?”

  “Edgar, sir. The bellhop.”

She held steady as he tucked his gun in the back waistband of his jeans and opened the door. “Can I help you?”

“Sorry to disturb you, sir. Your suit is here, along with a small leather case. And, I was instructed to hand you this envelope personally.”

She tucked her gun in the back of her waistband and stepped into the room. Dressed in his red uniform, Edgar stood beside a rollaway luggage rack, a dove-gray colored, freshly pressed, Italian silk suit hung on it. A metal case was on the floor of it.

“Hello, Edgar, nice to see you again,” she said to him, smiling her brightest at him.

“Evening, Miss.” Edgar grinned, dimples exposed as his dark eyes lit up. He handed Alex the envelope. “Sir, do you want me to bring in your suit?”

“Edgar, wait.” Alex frowned and took the suit off the rack, inspecting it.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, nervous by the way he was checking the suit out. Alex laid it on the bed and retrieved the case and set it on the table.

“Suit’s mine. I’d packed it in my suitcase I’d taken on the plane. I was not expecting to have these back.” He cautiously opened it and his tense shoulders relaxed. Withdrawing a pair of Beretta 92FS pistols, converted to full-auto and given compensators to make them more controllable in auto-fire: his guns! Dual shoulder holsters were in the case, too.

“Why would Waters send you your guns and a suit from our crashed plane?”

“If I were to make an educated guess, it would be to give the Damned facing Lisle tonight hope they can survive her.”

Understanding now, she said with a smile, “Because Alexander Walker never breaks his promise and you said you’d kill Lisle. Waters gave you back your signature look, to give hope to the troops.”

“As you said, to rally the Damned and keep them from fleeing in terror when Lisle arrives.” Alex asked, “Edgar, has there been a woman hanging around this evening? Beautiful, silvery-blonde hair, on the scary-stalker side?”

Edgar shook his head. “No, sir. I’d remember a woman like her. Just a creepy-looking dude that smelt really bad has been in and out of the hotel since 3 pm. Dude had weird eyes, like a person who died and didn’t stay dead.”

  “Ghoul.”

A short, nervous laugh shot from Edgar. “Ghoul? Right, like they exist.” Kai gave him a steady look, not denying it. Edgar suddenly wasn’t as cheerful. “You aren’t kidding, are you? Ghouls are real?”

“Sorry, kid, monsters exist and are hunting in your town.”

“I knew it!” he crowed, surprising them both by his exultation. “I knew there were things strange happening in Magdeburg. Supernatural kind. Can I help you?”

“There is something you can do for us.” Alex dropped the clips in his gun. Full. He loaded the clips back and set the guns in the case, then he took the envelope and opened it, read the note inside. “Waters is sending us a car. I’d rather check out Club Vampyre without his men watching us. Edgar, can you take us?”

“Sure. My cousin owns a cab. We can escort ya there.”

Alex addressed Edgar. “Tell him to be here in half an hour. I’ll give you five hundred dollars each to be our eyes and ears at the club.”

“Hell, yes.” He dug out a cell phone and before he could make the call, Alex stopped him.

“Edgar, we need supplies. Can you find and purchase them for us?”

  “What do you need?”

  “Silver bullets.”

Edgar made to laugh but quickly shut up when he realized Alex was serious. “What caliber?”

Alex took the notepad set beside the telephone and wrote down what they needed. Handing it Edgar, he pulled out several thousand dollars out of his wallet and gave it to the stunned kid. “Try to locate the top nine items on the list, the rest we can work without if you can’t locate them. It’s important to you and your cousin’s safety and ours, if you can quickly fulfill my request.”

  “Holy water? Why that?”

“Because it burns demon vampires.” Alex grinned, exposing his fangs.

“Cool. Are those real?” Edgar asked, peering closer at his white fangs.

“Quite real, I assure you. Want me to bite you to prove it?” Alex’s grin widened into a wolfish one.

Instead of being afraid, Edgar grinned back as he took the list and tucked it and the money inside his coat. “No, thanks. I believe you. Damn, this means Eddie was right. He said the new club was crawling with vamps. I knew there were werewolves, just not vampires, too.”

  “Werewolves?” K
ai repeated, exchanging a worried look with Alex. “You’ve seen them in the city?”

“Not personally. Couple of prostitutes told me they saw a wolf running around the bad sector of town. Eating bums and druggies. I thought the silver bullets were for it.”

“The Damned are allergic to silver. Was the wolf silver and stood on two legs?”

“No, a big black one, running on four. What is the Damned?”

“Demon vamps. Opposite of what I and Kai are. Must be a vampire hunting in animal form. If you see one walking about on two legs, run! Lisle is a nasty vamp who loves to play with her food.”

Blanching, Edgar asked in a squeaky voice, “Is that one you asked about?”

  “Yes.”

“How do you kill something that evil?”

“Holy water is the only thing that slows the bitch down. Silver bullets don’t do a thing to stop her. The only sure way to end her is to cut off her head.”

“You don’t have machetes on the list.”

Kai took hold the hilt of her sword and pulled it free the scabbard. “We don’t need machetes. We use swords.”

“Oh, okay. Uh, I know where to find the bullets. Won’t take long. Since our town is famous for the Wulf of Magdeburg, the weapon stores carry silver bullets for tourists and hunters who track up in the deep country of the Harz Mountains, who think they might run into the Wolf.”

“And just who do you think the silver wolf is?” Kai said as she sheathed her sword.

“Holy crap! Are you saying the Wolf of Magdeburg is not dead?”

“She’s back and wants revenge.” Alex pulled his gun out of his waistband and held it at his side. “Still want to help us?”

“Boss, I’m on the job. I won’t fail you.”

“Just don’t get killed. Be careful out there and make sure you wear a silver cross.” Alex grabbed the water bottle from her backpack and tossed it to Edgar. “Mind you, don’t drink it. Its Holy water and you’ll need it if you run into a vamp.”

  “Back in half an hour.”

“Be vigilant and watch for ghouls, too,” Alex warned as Edgar pulled the luggage rack out with him, his cellphone pressed to his ear.

After the door closed shut, she sat down on the bed and pulled on socks, her heeled boots. “We need all the help we can get here, but are you sure you want to involve Edgar? Don’t get me wrong, his enthusiasm is commendable, except he has no experience fighting vamps.”

“He and his cousin know the city and get us out, if we encounter a trap at Club Vampyre. Here.”

He took the gun he had tucked in his waistband and handed it to her. Putting it on the table, next to his gun case, she pulled her own tucked in her waistband and set it next to it. Alex slipped out of his jeans. Leaving his black boxer briefs on, he pulled on the freshly pressed pants made of Italian silk and fastened the button and zipped them. It was like watching a dance as he carefully dressed, meticulous as the man she knew intimately to the one the Damned feared and admired. Threading the leather belt through the loops, he buckled it and attached his holstered gun to it at his hip. The plum-colored dress shirt was made of the finest silk. Leaving the top four buttons undone, Alex pulled on black socks and the fine Italian leather shoes of polished black. He drew out the coat matching the pants and shook it out before hanging it on the back of the chair. Taking the hairbrush out of the plastic bag, he quickly ran it through his hair, wincing at the knots untangling. Finished, he handed it to her.

“Thanks.” She sat on the bed and went to work on her hair.

He lifted the remote control off the night stand and turned the flat screen television on. The reports from the local news confirmed what Edgar told them. “Three bodies were found floating in the Elba, their throats torn out, bodies partially eaten. More details later.”

She left the bed and put the hairbrush in the plastic bag. Leaving her hair down, she grabbed her backpack and pulled out her own dual shoulder holster, put it on and snapped it. Leaving her guns on the table, she took the leather jacket she’d purchased and hung it on the other chair.

Sitting beside Alex, who reclined on the bed, propping his head with the pillows, she asked, “Alex, do you think there are actual werewolves hunting in the city?”

“We exist. Why not other creatures of the night?”

“Monsters. Edgar called us monsters.” Kai pouted, unhappy by the reference.

“Sweetheart, Edgar wasn’t talking about us. He knows the difference.” He tugged on a lock of hair to get her to look at him. “Why haven’t you braided your hair?”

“Can’t find my rubber band.” Kai stretched out and laid her head on his shoulder. He put his arms around her, holding her close to him. A knock on the door sent them rolling onto their feet, reaching for their guns.

Too early for Edgar to return. Scanning, she was surprised to find him and his cousin in the hallway. They were nervous and excited. “It’s Edgar and his cousin.”

Alex opened the door and the young men grinned at them. They wore matching, black leather coats, black tee-shirts, and jeans, combat boots. They appeared surprisingly comfortable and ready to do covert operations on a vampire club.

“Gentlemen, have you already gotten what we needed?” Alex asked gruffly, holstering his guns in the harness he wore. She did the same.

“We pretty much had most of it at home.”

  “Come in then.”

The kids each picked up long, canvas bag and carried it inside the hotel room. Edgar thumbed at the dark-haired young man beside him. Sir, my cousin, Eddie.” If she didn’t know they were cousins, she’d have thought they were twins.

“Pleasure to meet you, sir. Ma’am.” Eddie nodded to her. He was definitely German, yet his English was perfect.

“Hi, I’m Kai Jordan.” She offered out her hand to him, restraining her usually strong grip, not wanting to hurt him.

“You’re pretty. Have you been a vampire long?”

“Uh, my mother was half Borne, my father human. My friend turned me when I was sixteen, after I’d been attacked and was dying. He,” she indicated to Alex with her chin, “was born a vampire.”

  “Literally?”

“Yes. My parents were vampires. We are called the Borne. Edgar,” Alex asked as he lifted his jacket off the chair and put it on, “let’s have the bullets.”

“Yes, sir.” Edgar and his cousin unzipped the bags and withdrew cartons and handed them to Alex and her. “Sir, we had to sneak in the backway into the hotel.” He explained, “The ghoul, who was here earlier, is back and standing across the street, watching the hotel. You’re under surveillance.”

“Damn,” Alex said, looking to her, as she examined the bullets. “that’ll make it difficult for us to slip away unnoticed.”

Eddie shoved his hands in his pockets. “Uh, sir, I hope this isn’t out of line, but can you shift into an animal?”

  “Yes, why?”

“We could sneak you out that way.”

Alex inquired to her, “What do you think?”

Stuffing the cartons into her backpack, including the boxes Alex handed her, she replied, “We could change into rats and they could carry us out. Where did you park?” she asked the humans as she pulled on her coat, arranging her guns more comfortable against her ribs and shoulders.

  “A block over.”

“What else do you have in your bags?”

Edgar grinned, a devious one in light of the serious situation. “We’re fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We’ve been stocking up on stuff that would be helpful in a jam, if ya know what I mean.” He winked at Alex in a conspiring gesture.

“Good show.” Alex stared thoughtfully at the canvas bags. “Kai, let’s put our swords in the bags.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea? Remember, only way to kill Lisle is to chop her head off?”

“We’ll have our guns on us as we enter the club. Edgar and Eddie, can you sneak into Club Vampyre with the bags?”

  Eddie answered, “I’ve
been in and out of the club several times now without being seen. We can get your weapons in.”

“Eddie,” Edgar looked like he hurt, “why didn’t you ask me to go with you?”

“Sorry, man, you didn’t believe me vampires were real. I got pictures!” Whipping out his cell phone, Alex stopped him before he could access the photos stored on it.

“We already know there’s vamps in Club Vampyre. It’s extremely important you bring us our swords otherwise tonight will not end well for us or you.”

Not happy about being parted from her sword, she took hold her scabbard and sword, wrapping the belt around it and cinched it. Edgar unzipped one of the bags. Putting it in, she stepped back as Alex put his in on top of it. He zipped it closed.

“Won’t the vampires have a problem with you carrying in guns?”

Blurring their weapons, she asked innocently, “What weapons?”

“Way cool!” the humans said together.

Kai heard several cars pull up outside. Checking out the window, she saw six vampires and four ghouls exit the vehicles. They held short, compact machine guns, and were watching the rooftops and park, prepared for an attack. A third car arrived, a white Mercedes, and an immaculately dressed, blonde-haired vampire climbed.

“Gentlemen,” she said, “time to leave. Company’s arrived.”

A knock wrapped on the door, surprising them. Alex put his fingers to his lips and urged Eddie and Edgar to carry the bags into the bathroom, closing the door behind them. He opened the room door and the vampire she saw getting out of the white car stood in the hallway, flanked by two muscle-bound bodyguards.

“Mr. Walker, Miss Jordan, I am Leo Sper, and we are here to give you safe escort to Club Vampyre.”
