They all listened without speaking, the unseen horror of what was in front of them seeping slowly into their minds.

A horrific realization came to Josh. His mother was out there in that mass of humanity. Unwanted images began forming in his head, images that were mixtures of memories of his mother and things he had seen in the past few days.

“No,” he whispered, and covered his face with his hands, digging his fingers into his eyes as if to prevent them from seeing.

Emma put her arm around him and pulled his head down to her chest, holding him tightly as her fingers combed through his hair.

  “We’ll save her Josh.”

They were interrupted by the sound of doors opening on the side of the gym, and a brief shaft of light shone in, streaming across the mass like a lighthouse beacon. The silhouetted outlines of heads and legs and arms flashed in view, then the doors closed and the darkness returned.

Two men had entered, and were holding a conversation.

“What are they saying?” Amber whispered.

  “I can’t hear,” Billy replied.

Josh lifted his head from Emma’s chest and stared across. Brushing a few tears from his eyes, he said, “We have to get closer. This way. Keep low.”

They crawled towards the corner of the gym, skirting the noisy mass of humans. About halfway there, the overhead lights suddenly came on.

The reality was worse than their imaginations. More people there than they thought. Doing things they hadn’t thought of.

The gym floor was full of them, all tightly bound together in coils of arms and legs, cocks locked in cunts, and tongues and fingers in constant motion. Their eyes soaked up the details the darkness had blessedly hidden, their minds reeling in horror from the reality of it.

Except for Josh. He refused to look. Just the thought of his mother somewhere in there caused his heart to ache, and he knew that actually seeing her would probably kill him. And if it didn’t, it would burn an image onto his brain he would never be able to forget.

Instead, he looked over at the two men. It was Chief Moore and that guy from the hospital – Strang. They were disagreeing about something.

“Guys,” Josh whispered, “let’s get closer.”

The other three still stared at the writhing mass in front of them, unable to tear their eyes away.

“Hey!” Josh said, a little louder. They still didn’t hear him.

He reached across Emma and slapped Billy on the back of his head. Billy blinked and looked at him, his eyes distant and confused.

“Come on,” Josh insisted, “we have to get closer.”

Billy shook his head as if shaking off a punch, and said, “You’re right. Keep moving.” He took Amber’s shoulder and pulled her to him.

Josh did the same with Emma and they moved to the corner of the gym, keeping low. Hopefully, they would be seen as part of the mass. They could hear most of the conversation now.

“That gym explosion wasn’t a terrorist bomb, was it?” Moore shouted, “It was you murdering those people.”

Josh and Billy exchanged glances. “Looks like I owe you an apology,” Josh whispered.

When Strang pointed the gun at Chief Moore, the girls gasped.

“You’re planning on doing the same thing here, aren’t you?” Moore continued, “To these innocent people?”

Josh knew he had to do something. He looked around for anything he could use as a weapon, but the only thing close was a box of gym equipment in the corner. He scurried over to it on his knees.

“The missile is due in twenty-five minutes,” Strang said, “and when it hits, there will be nothing left to this place.”

Josh looked through the box. It was all useless, like jump ropes and bean bags. Nothing he could use. Then he spotted them. Sitting at the bottom were several baseballs.

“I’ll give you a choice,” Strang said, “Either join in with the orgy in front of you, or I put a bullet in your head.”

“If I’m going to die,” Moore replied, “I’m going to die knowing who I am.”

Josh picked up two balls and turned back towards his friends. “Billy!” he whispered, and when his friend looked he tossed him one of the balls.

“I was hoping you’d say that,” Strang said. They all heard the click from the gun.

Josh and Billy stood as one, as if they had fielded a bunt and turned to fire the ball to first. They wheeled and threw, putting everything they could behind it. Billy was known for his fastball, and Josh for his accuracy, and they both lived up to those billings.

The two balls whizzed through the air as Strang’s finger tightened on the trigger. Billy’s hit first, striking Strang on his side, cracking a rib and sending shards of pain through his body. But before he could react, Josh’s ball struck him square on the side of the head, right above the ear. It made a hollow popping sound, which was immediately followed by a gunshot.

  Chapter 39

Strang went down in a crumpled heap, and Moore slumped down to his knees and leaned forward.

“Shit!” Josh exclaimed, and ran towards the pair. Moore was still leaning forward and spatters of blood colored the wooden floor beside his head.

“Chief!” Josh called, and slid down on his knees next to the man. His arm went around his shoulders.

To his surprise, Moore sat up, sucked in air between his teeth, and said, “Ow, that hurts!” He ran his fingers across the side of his head, and they came away with blood on them.

  “You ok?” Josh asked.

The Chief winced. “I think so. It just grazed me.” He finally recognized who it was. “Josh? What are you doing here?”

  “Looking for my mom.”

Moore glanced at the pile of humanity. “She’s in there?”

  Josh nodded without looking.

  “I’m sorry Josh.”

Josh stood and put his hand under the Chief’s arm. “Let me help you up.”

Moore quickly shrugged his hand off. “Don’t touch me,” he said.

“What’s wrong?” By this time the other three had joined him.

“Get away from me, all of you,” Moore said, “Strang infected me.”

  “Chief, it’s ok,” Josh said.

“No, it’s not ok,” Moore said loudly, “Didn’t you hear me? I’m infected, and at any moment I’m going to turn into one of them.” He nodded his head towards the mass of humanity in front of them. “I can already feel it.”

And he could. Images flashed across his mind. Visions of Maggie doing things to him. They were joined by other images – things he had seen in his life. He could feel the desire building in him.

“Go!” he shouted, “Now! I don’t want to infect you!”

“Chief, we can help you,” Amber said.

“No you can’t. There’s no cure. The Army’s known about this for a while, and they’ve done the research. It can’t be reversed.”

“It can,” Josh said. “I had it.”

Billy removed the small backpack he had gotten from the hospital. He pulled out the portable defibulator.

Moore looked at Josh with surprise. “You had it?”

  “Yes.”

“How’d you get rid of it?”

“Electricity. I was shocked and it stopped whatever it was. I’m not contagious either.”

“Electricity?” Moore was having trouble concentrating. He could feel his hard cock pressing against his pants.

Billy flicked the power on and the defibulator began to beep. “Takes a minute to charge,” he said.

Moore heard him but couldn’t understand the words. He was staring at Amber, his eyes locked on the swells of her breasts.

She saw his gaze and took a step back. “You better hurry Billy,” she said.

Moore stood. The blood from his head wound darkened the collar of his uniform shirt, and he wobbled slightly as he fought for balance. His eyes remained on Amber.

Josh stepped between them. “Hold on Chief, give us a chance to help you.”

Moore used one hand to push him out of the way, and walked towards Amber. A grin spread across his face.

Amber kept backing up, her eyes wide in fright.

Josh recovered, and went to grab Moore’s arm, but before he could reach it he heard a sound from behind him.

  “Hey Chief, want to fuck?”

Josh and Moore spun around together, and both saw Emma standing there with her blouse and bra pulled up, revealing her perfect breasts.

Moore’s grin widened and he said, “Let’s fuck.” He walked toward Emma, who took a step back but left herself exposed.

As he got close, another voice came from behind.

  “No, fuck me Chief!”

They all turned to see Amber had repeated Emma’s actions, exposing her breasts to the Chief’s gaze. He grinned and walked towards her.

The defibulator’s beeps turned into a steady hum, and Billy moved quickly. Stepping behind the Chief, he placed one paddle high up on his shoulders and the other on his lower back, and pressed the trigger.

There was a crackle of electricity and the Chief’s body arched in a rigid spasm. He held there briefly before crumpling to the floor. All four ran and knelt around him.

“I think I killed him!” Billy said.

Emma put her finger on the side of his neck and they all held their breath for several seconds.

  “He’s alive!” she finally announced.

“But is he ok?” Josh asked. He gave the Chief a light slap on the face, but he remained unconscious.

Josh glanced up at Amber and then stared. He nudged Billy and nodded in the girl’s direction. Billy looked at her and grinned wide.

“Amber baby,” Billy said, “you can put them away now.”

Amber stared at him. “What are you talking about?”

Emma grinned and reached over to her cousin, tugging her blouse down over her exposed breasts.

Amber’s face turned a bright shade of red. “Oh. Sorry about that.” She finished covering herself.

The Chief moaned and they all looked back down. His eyes were open but unfocused.

“Chief! Are you ok?” Josh asked.

Moore looked at him and blinked. “What happened?”

  Josh grinned. “You’re cured.”

Moore shook his head, trying to remove the cobwebs from his mind. “I must have blacked out. Last thing I remember is telling you all to leave because I was infect– Yes, get away from me!”

“It’s ok Chief. You’re not infected anymore,” Josh said. He explained again about the electricity.

Moore sat up. “If that’s true, we can save all these people.”

“We can,” Josh said, “but we don’t have time. The missile is due in twenty minutes.”

Moore stood, and the others rose with him.

“I need to talk to the General,” Moore said. He walked over and picked up Strang’s gun, then stood over the unconscious Lieutenant.

“Did you kill this cocksucker?” Moore asked, and quickly added, “Pardon my French ladies.”

He kicked Strang hard in the side.

The prone man let out a low moan but remained unconscious.

“I guess not,” Moore said. “Too bad.” He reached for his handcuffs but remembered they had been taken from him. “Is there anything around to tie him with?”

“There’s some jump ropes over in that storage box,” Josh said.

  “Perfect. Get them please.”

Amber went over and pulled a few jump ropes from the box and brought them back, handing them to Moore.

“I can do that Chief,” Josh said, holding out his hand. “Why don’t you go see the General?”

Moore looked at him with a steady gaze. “Strang doesn’t leave here, right?”

“He isn’t going anywhere.” Josh’s voice was firm.

“That’s good,” Moore said, “Tie his hands and legs so he can’t leave, and then you all get out of here.”

“What about them?” Josh said, nodding to the mass.

“I understand your concern son, but it’s too dangerous to get near them. Once I let the General know there’s a cure, he’ll call off the missiles.”

“But my mom is in there somewhere.”

Moore stared at him, and then stepped close so they were face to face.

“You mother is a good woman. And I’m going to do everything I can to stop those missiles and save your mom. But you know she wouldn’t want you risking yourself to save her.”

Josh looked down. He knew the Chief was right.

“Besides,” Moore added, “do you really think she wants you to see her that way? Just leave her be for now, and we’ll get her out later.”

He reached down and fished inside of Strang’s pocket, then withdrew a set of keys. After taking a few steps towards the door, he turned back and said, “Just make sure that cocksucker stays right here. He doesn’t get out.” He looked a bit sheepish for his language, and glanced at the girls.

  “Oui,” Amber replied.

Moore laughed and pushed his way through the door to the lobby.

Billy held out his hand. “I’ll help.”

Josh gave him one of the jump ropes. “Tie his feet first.”

Billy went to work, and Josh knelt down beside them, pulling his knife from his pants.

  “What’s that for?” Billy asked.

Josh didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed Strang’s pant leg and used the knife to slit it all the way up to the waist. When he did the same with the other leg, the pants pulled easily away from Strang’s body.

“Uh, bud,” Billy said, “what’s going on?”

“I want him to be vulnerable.”

Josh removed Strang’s shirt and t-shirt the same way, leaving him in just his boxers. Pulling his clothes together, he went through the pockets, finding a wallet, a key, and some change. He was about to pull Strang’s watch off his wrist when he felt something else at the bottom of the pocket. Pulling it out, he saw it was a small electronic device with a keypad and a blinking red light. He held it up and examined it closely.

“What’s that?” Emma asked, kneeling beside him.

“I think it’s the abort switch.”

  “How does it work?”

He ran his fingers over the small numeric keypad. “I guess there’s an abort code. Enter it, and the missile is called off.”

Emma stared at Strang. “How do we get it out of him?”

Josh considered the question. “I don’t know.”

Billy took the other jump rope, pulled Strang’s arms behind his back, and began binding them together. Seeing him do this, an idea leapt into Josh’s mind.

“Hold on a sec Billy, let me do that.”

  “You sure?”

“Yeah, take Emma over and see if there’s any more ropes in the box.”

Billy did as he asked, leaving Josh alone with Strang. He quickly leaned over and began working, shielding his actions from the others.

A minute later, Billy returned. “Sorry, no more ropes.”

“That’s ok,” Josh said, “I got him.” He stepped away from the trussed-up Strang.

Billy looked down and said, “You tied his hands in front? Is that a good idea?”

  “It’ll be fine,” Josh replied.

“Can we go now?” Amber asked.

“No,” Josh said, “now we wake him up.” He knelt again, and gave Strang a hard slap to the face.

“Josh, what are you doing?” Emma said.

“I have a plan,” Josh replied.

  “What plan?” she asked.

He turned around and looked at all of his friends. “You’re going to have to trust me on this, ok?”

He turned back to Strang and slapped him again. The Lieutenant’s eyes fluttered open and he looked around with a disoriented expression. Josh slapped him again.

“Hey!” Strang said, “Stop that!” He shook his head to clear his mind. Looking around at the gym, it seemed to come back to him. He noticed he was bound. “What
the fuck is this? Get these ropes off of me!” He struggled and winced in pain. “Ahhh, shit!” he said, “what the hell did you do to me?”

Josh stood and watched him struggle.

“Who the fuck are you?” Strang asked.

  “What now?” Billy said.

“Now,” Josh replied, “you leave me alone with him.”

  Chapter 40

Moore pulled into the police station and saw Trax’s Humvee parked in his spot. He took Strang’s gun with him as he went inside, pushing the door open quietly.

Looking around the corner, the lobby was empty, but he could hear Trax’s voice coming from down the hall to the holding cells. He crept down the tiled floor, listening to the conversation the General was having with someone on his radio.

“Yes sir,” Trax said, “everything’s on schedule. We should be out of here within the hour.”

“No sir,” the General continued, “I’m sorry to say no cure was found. We tried. Maybe next time.”

Moore edged around the corner and saw Trax’s back was to him. He also saw Officer Welles was still in one of the cells, naked and kneeling, pressed up against the bars. What was she still doing here?

“Local law enforcement?” Trax asked, “They’ve been extremely cooperative. But unfortunately the Chief here in town is among the sick. Yes, he’s with the others. There won’t be any evidence left.”

The voice on the other end spoke for a while, and then Trax replied, “Thank you sir. Receiving a medal is always an honor. Yes sir, I’ll contact you as soon as everything is over. Out.”

The General clicked off the radio and turned slightly towards Moore, whose eyes dropped down in shock. Trax’s penis was sticking out the front of his pants, semi-erect and covered with a condom. He also noticed Trax was wearing latex gloves.

Moore stepped out from behind the corner, pointing the gun. “Don’t move General. Keep your hands where I can see them.”

Trax turned around, his face momentarily contorted in shock before regaining his composure and smiling wide. He pushed his cock back in his pants and zipped up.
