Imagine if you will Reader the distinct and potent smell of urine, the menacing patter of rodent’s feet; the entrance to an old medieval alleyway is where our story begins.
Fifteenth century Romania is a place filled with lots of evil goings on and we begin here in troubled and sinister times. Lots of badly done to peasants are walking around with eyes filled with fear which echoed their deep desires just to be allowed to live for one more day. You see at this period in history Vlad Tepes was the ruler of this kingdom now known as modern day Romania. Vlad was not one who liked to talk things over, he would much rather impale someone than listen to their explanation of why they happened to not wash their underpants for a week. Enforcing order was the dish of the day or rather decade during his rule. But there was something even more fearsome and sinister than this tyrant, and that was the creatures known as vampires. It’s widely believed in folklore that all vampires originated from this country and it’s hardly challenging to see why there is so much about this East European country that embodies a society that is Gothic and sinister. Prepare to enter into a world of fantasy and stupidity that could alter the fate of the major planet known as Earth.
On One black and chilly night in a dank and gloomy Bucharest back street, a local sixteen-year-old youth named Viorel is walking home from his best friend Alexander’s house. His parents didn’t like him staying out beyond the transition from dusk to night, there was a many heinous character lurking around intent on showing how nasty they could be to the unlucky soul who crossed paths with said character. The alleyway was a favorite shortcut to Bucharest’s wealthy zone for the middle class it lasted for a good ten minutes at brisk walking speed to get from one end to the other.
This back street was not so much of a favorite at night when the intoxicated came out to pick a fight with somebody who was not game for a tussle. Viorel felt the need to be a bit quicker on this particular night, although he could not fully work out why. He had been in a few scrapes with the drunkards before and managed to get away with just a bloodied hooter. This night though seemed to be somewhat death inviting, Viorel didn’t like what his gut was telling him so he quickened up his pace to a slight jog.
Now at his quickened pace, Viorel felt a bit more relaxed knowing that home was getting a bit closer by each stride. The state of affairs is his gut was psychic because Viorel’s night was about to be one that would leave a permanent mark on his life. His sense in his gut is one of foreboding and impending doom. The alleyway was also a favorite cut through for nasty and sinister vampires on the lookout for their next meal and Viorel was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A couple of inebriated drunkards were crawling down along the alley side guttering “Here Dan I think I found my teeth in this rat excrement here!” said one drunk fellow by the esteemed name of Adrian.
“Ah I’m pleased for you Adrian, can I have a drink from your bottle again?” said Dan the bleary eyed one.
“You know what you can do Dan” replied the teeth finding drunk
“What’s that?” Dan asked in a concussed state.
“You can chew on my lice ridden ballbags” shouted Adrian. At this point drunkard, Adrian found his teeth in the rat droppings and settled them back into his mouth. Viorel had copped a load of these two and it gave him a momentary lift in spirits, but it was very short lived…far too short-lived to embed itself in long lasting memory.
Not far from reaching the safety of home Viorel noticed that the wind was starting to pick up, almost to a slight gale. More than adequate for a closing vampire to cover his noises, not that vampires make a habit of making much noise when they are on the hunt. But this added amount of background decibels gave a sort of insurance policy to any vampire who was lax in their hunting technique.
Rats scurried towards Viorel their disease-ridden teeth bare for him to see. They shot past him and into a gutter behind. This added fuel to Viorel’s already nervous and edgy fire, what were they running from?
As if on cue Viorel heard a shrill tooting, the toot was near, coming from an Owl obviously intent on putting the fear up him even further. Viorel felt some moisture running down the back of his legs, and realized that he was indeed pooping himself.
Who could blame him this alleyway was like a tunnel to death at the best of times, okay so there was a light at the end but you never truly knew if you would make it to that light, during the night time walk. He truly knew this was not a good time to be
Walking this route, his mind decided to make his legs go into top gear and make him run as if his life depended on it, and now it really did.
With that, he felt an icy hand grasp his shoulder. …But how could this be he was running at full pace?
That’s when he felt the final nail in the coffin of his fear, a vampire had tracked his movements from the second he stepped into the fateful alley
way-kept a logical distance away and was damned if it was going to let its “meal” make off and escape.
Vampires are ingenious and highly driven for the hunt, and this vampire was no exception, a mere human deciding to leg it was no warrant for a defeat, the human runs, and the vampire runs faster. Nobody knows for sure how quickly a vampire can move when it really wants to, but this vampire moved so swiftly that within five seconds of Viorel deciding to pump his legs to run speed, the vampire grasped his shoulder and forced him to a stop.
The next action the vampire decided to take was to spin him around so they were face to face.At this point Viorel was in total panic and shock when folks describe a life flashing before their eyes moment before they cheat death, this is precisely what Viorel experienced.
This vampire had come for him and he was about to meet a macabre end.
Except our Romanian vampire did not feel the urge to kill Viorel, instead his was going to bleed him to merely quench his blood thirst for the evening. The vampire must have been close to seven feet tall and was very well developed on the muscle side of things. His long black hair flowing in the wind, which was now starting to settle as if almost on cue, now it was not needed to disguise the vampires footsteps.
Viorel felt his heart pounding like a hammer inside his chest; he had never felt fear like this before. Even a few weeks previous when he had been set on by some boys at his school who had held a knife to his throat. The thing is it had been a rubber one anyway so it was never going to take his life, but this vampire might just do that.
The ambushing vampire looked deep into Viorel’s eyes and saw the boys fear like pools of frenetic emotion mirrors. The fangs of the vampire were aching to sink into young Viorel’s flesh, they tingled with excitement at the prospect of tasting the blood of this young male.At this moment as the vampire stood looking up and down his victim, Viorel decided he would not let himself be taken without a bloody good battle.
Of course, he should have realized his efforts would be fruitless but he gave the vampire a kick in the gonads to test his luck, a foolish mistake of the highest order.
“You fool! You feeble minded little fool!” scowled the vampire.
“Let me go you creature of Satan!” said Viorel.
“Do you think your puny and pathetic little ball assault has any effect on me?” asked the vampire.
“Why have you chosen me, I know you’re going to kill me?” asked Viorel.
“Because small fry, it’s just one of those things I was walking down this alley” explained the vampire “right at the moment you took it upon yourself to step into it”
Viorel began to whimper quietly, the vampire used this to finish his mickey taking.
“Have you not heard of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?” questioned the vampire.
Before Viorel had a chance to come back with an answer, the vampire continued “don’t even answer because your fate was sealed the second you entered this alley” scoffed the vampire. “Of all the alleys and shortcuts in Bucharest you had to choose this one, your decision is going to cost you dearly!” the Vampire confirmed.
Viorel gave one last attempt to pull away …but it was to no avail the vampire flicked back his hair and bit into Viorel’s neck, the vampire gave out a satisfied snarl. Blood trickled down the vampire’s deathly fangs, his eyes burned with wild raging fire.
Viorel knew that he had been indeed foolish to think that a vampire would reel from his attack; he closed his eyes and let himself be taken by his attacker. The vampire exposed his skin slicing fangs and began to feast.
(Authors note: Kick back make yourself a brew of the special stuff and read a story that could alter your consciousness forever or at least until you have read this book ten times over and know it like the back of your hand, once that happens use it as a makeshift mini-table for placing coffee mugs on or if ever a nuclear winter sets in you have something to burn, to keep you warm and toasty. As the author I’m going to take you on a journey across Europe, splitting many different time zones, which is critical for the plot development of this story and for the safety of my writer’s sanity. Now let’s get back to the action and not before time eh reader?)
As Viorel reopened his eyes he was suddenly aware that he had been taken some distance away from his last conscious position.
How long had he been chomped on? He had no idea what had happened from the moment he closed his eyes to the time he was at now.
He was in a long and warm room, there was a huge table in front of him, candles were laid out in a perfectly straight line on both sides of the table. Viorel could see rows and rows of plates of meat and vegetables. There was a slight scent of rose and wine aroma His nostrils came to life more than ever before, he looked to his left and there sitting in a grand chair was his attacker, smug and with a satisfied look on his face.
“Do you know where you are?” asked the vampire.
“No I’m guessing I must be in some castle somewhere and why I’m not dead only you know” replied Viorel. At that moment the vampire turned his eyes to give Viorel a signal to also look elsewhere.
Viorel did this without hesitation and sat in another corner was a royal figure.
“Viorel I’m glad to see your up and Kristen did not drain you to death,” said the royal man.
“So your name is Kristen?” asked Viorel.
“That’s correct and you’ll be wise to listen to the rest of Vlad’s words young scamp!” scowled Kristen.
“Kristen I’m sure this young man will do what we say does not everyone in my kingdom?” queried Vlad.
“I’m sorry your highness but this young man has courage beyond his years,” said Kristen
“Oh my god I’m in castle Dracula. Why have you kept me alive and why do I feel like I’m getting stronger and more alert by the second?” said Viorel.
“Right young man, first of all, you will calm down and not ask inane questions!” shouted Vlad.
“You See my lord, listen to his young rowdy mouth, does he not know the true extent of the predicament he is in?” asked Kristen
“Let’s give him some patience for the time being I’m sure it dawned on his mind that I’ll be asking the questions now,” Vlad said smugly.
“Okay young fellow, you’re correct in that you’re in my castle …but realize this I don’t tolerate questioning, especially from a young peasant like you,” said Vlad shrewdly
“You will answer my questions and will also do as I request, any failure to do this will result in your instant impalement … do I make myself clear?” asked Vlad in an angry tone. Viorel suddenly felt any confidence he had built up since his awakening slip away, and now began to shake with anxiety.
Vlad could sense Viorel’s increasing anxiety and fear; something that he had an uncanny ability to do.He could read people’s fears and deep seeded desires.
“Now I see you have finally woken up to the deep situation you’re in, you will answer me this” demanded Vlad “What does the general peasant populace think about me?”
“But my lord the general public doesn’t speak much of their minds. …Because they are too much in awe and fear of you” answered Viorel.
“You see my lord the public are simpletons who have not the heart or strength to try to oppose you,” said Kristen.
“This I already believe to be the case, all that concerns me is a small minority which I think could be conspiring to rid my kingdom of myself and my vampire friends,” said Vlad.
“But surely sire we can wean out this little group and have them impaled or hung and drawn, what can they do to oppose you my lord?” questioned Kristen.
The candles in the great hall began to flicker almost in perfect synchrony. A dead human skull rolled off the table onto the marble floor. Viorel jumped up at the clanging noise it made. He could feel his teeth starting to hurt very badly, a thousand times worse than when he had his decay period and got his two wisdom teeth pulled out.
The pain was immense and
he began to whimper.
“Shut up, and take the damn pain boy!” Kristen said nastily. “Before the night is over you’ll be thanking me for what I have given you”.
“Indeed young Viorel, Kristen is right for he has given you a gift beyond your puny comprehension” clarified Vlad. This remark passed right over Viorel’s head like a soaring eagle.
“Okay if we must spell it out then let’s not waste any more valuable time, in the simplest of terms we have turned your wussy self into a vampire,” Kristen said with a huge grin.
Viorel began to feel more immense pain than ever before… as now all his worries had been confirmed. He looked down at his fingernails and saw them begin to grow beyond anything he had ever seen.
“Come to my huge Gothic mirror and take a look at yourself” demanded Vlad.
Not needing to be told twice Viorel moved to the north side of the great hall and stood in front of the giant mirror. It was gargantuan and glowed with crystals around the edges. It had to be ten feet wide and almost double that in length.
Viorel imagined the craftsmanship that must have gone into making it. The countless hours of fine sculpting the edging, the worry of any possible damage to the crystals.
“Have you finished admiring my property?” said Vlad hastily.
“Oh pardon me, yes so what am I looking for?” questioned Viorel.
Vlad grabbed him by the shoulders and cocked Viorel’s head to the left, and there it was bold as brass, a newly grown Fang. Viorel’s eyes watered, and with this Vlad cocked his head to the right side…another fang was clear to see.
Kristen harked “See Viorel your now one of us, welcome to club vampire, only the chosen get to this point”. The words that came out of Kristen’s mouth suddenly filled Viorel with certain unexpected warmth. All of his life to date had been a struggle with acceptance; sure he had a small grouping of friends but he also had more than his fair share of enemies from his school, and the enemies outnumbered the friends.
“Are you deep in thought Viorel? Be thankful we spared your life because we could have taken it away so easily” Vlad confirmed.
“But my parents and my friends, they will not be able to see me again!” Viorel whimpered. His previous elevation had now sunk to a bigger low than he thought possible.
