She’s still a rag doll, though, so I pick her up and carry her to the couch, where we both collapse after never even having made it to the bedroom.

Laying on the opposite side of the couch, sweat covering both of us, I grin at her.

  “That was fun.”

Violet wipes some sweat from her face. The little pieces of hair around her forehead are all wet and stuck to her skin.

“That should have done the job,” I exhale.

Violet is pulling a knitted blanket over herself. “What job?”

I think about it for a second. Should I tell her?

I figure I need to. After all, I need to make sure that if she’s gotten pregnant tonight, she lets me know. None of that raising a baby in secrecy shit. I need that motorcycle.

“I know about you and Sean.”

Her eyes narrow slightly. “Sean and I aren’t a thing. I told you that.”

“No, that’s not what I’m talking about. I know about…the other thing.” I wiggle my eyebrows.

  Violet starts full-out scowling.

“Hey, what’s with the grumpy face? Didn’t we just have a good time?”

“What are you talking about?” she snaps. “What other thing?”

I fold my arms across my chest and give her a smile.

“I know you’re looking to get a baby in you.”

Brief shock shows on her face. “Sean told you? That’s none of your business.”

I shrug. “He didn’t want to tell me right away, but I have a way of getting things out of him.”

  Now, she really looks upset.

“Hey.” I sit up straighter. “I wasn’t trying to make you mad.”

Violet sighs. “I know. Thanks. You guys are best friends, right? I guess it only makes sense he would tell you. I tell my best friend everything.”

“Right.” I nod. “He also told me you’re not looking for a dad. You just need some…swimmers.”

Her lips twist. “Yeah. Things fell through with the clinic I wanted.”

“It’s good you have me, then.”

Violet’s eyes quickly widen, and she covers her mouth with her hands. “Oh my God! We didn’t use a condom. Why didn’t we use a condom?”

“Huh?” I stare at her. “Why would you?”

“Because I don’t know you!” she shrieks. “You could have STDs, or—”

“Tested just last week. I get it done all the time, so you don’t need to freak out.”

“It’s just…” Violet rubs her temples. “It’s not like me to just hook up without any protection.”

“How are you going to get pregnant with a condom?”

“I’m not…” She trails off, suspiciously eyeing me. “Wait…”

“Sean and I made a bet. He thinks I can’t get you pregnant before he does.”

  Violet’s jaw drops. “What?”

“Yeah.” I nod. “One-Shot Sean. That’s what they called him, because that’s all he has in him. Know what they call me in the army? Frank the Tank. I—”

“Shut up,” Violet hisses, sitting up straighter.

The blanket falls off her torso, and she quickly wraps it back around herself. As if I didn’t get a good look while inside of her.

“What are you talking about, a bet?”

  “Yeah.”

I stretch my arms above my head, letting my legs butterfly open. One of the windows is cracked a bit, and a cool breeze comes in and floats over all my sweatiest parts.

“Man, I love the weather here.”

“Frank. Did you two seriously make a bet on me?”

“Yeah.” I shrug. “What’s the big deal? You want to get pregnant, don’t you?”

“Not by you!” She waves her hand around. “I don’t even know you.”

“Damn. Didn’t you say that you don’t want a dad involved? Why do you need to know me?”

“That’s not what I’m saying.” Her face turns red. “I don’t know that you won’t change your mind and want to be involved.”

“That won’t happen,” I quickly say. “I’m not looking for a family.”

  “You need to leave. Now.”

  I snort. “Fine.”

I move to pick up my clothes, yanking them on as I walk toward the door. Violet’s behind me the whole way, the blanket wrapped around her trailing on the floor.

She holds the door open, waiting for me to leave.

On the doorstep, I turn back around. “You know, this is actually a perfect—”

The door slams in my face, cutting me off.

I stand under the porch light, thinking about everything that just happened. The clubbing. The flirting. The awesome sex. The load I shot into Violet that nearly went on for days.

All in all, the night’s been a real success.

  Chapter 13

  Violet

I’ve lost my mind. That’s the only possible explanation.

After a night of barely sleeping, I sit at the kitchen table staring out at the backyard. Seven hours of rolling around in bed and two cups of coffee later, and I still feel like the living dead.

Since Frank left last night, I’ve picked up my phone at least six times to call Sean and tell him off. In the end, though, I only texted Kaila and told her I was taking a sick day—something I never do.

Today’s an exception, though. It has to be. If I don’t deal with what’s on my mind, I’ll implode.

Sighing, I go to my bedroom, yank off my pajamas, and pull on some jean shorts and a fresh white T-shirt. I must have scrubbed a layer of skin off in the shower the night before. After Frank left, I still smelled him on me. But the part that I hated about that was the fact that I loved the smell. Every time I inhaled, I remembered the way he’d pinned me to the wall and banged me silly.

  So I scrubbed even harder.

Now, though, as I make the half-hour walk back to where I left my car last night, I have to face the truth: it’s kind of hot to have two guys making a bet over me.

That doesn’t make what Frank did okay. Not at all. Trying to get a woman pregnant without her consent is absolutely insane.

I myself don’t know what I was thinking last night. It had to have been the alcohol. I made Sean get tested, and then I turned right around and went bareback with Frank.

  Loony. That’s what it is.

But it’s also kind of hot.

And, okay, if Frank does get me pregnant, fine. Maybe it’s good. I needed a backup plan anyway, just in case my one time with Sean didn’t do the job.

Last night, I wasn’t even thinking about getting pregnant. All I knew was that a hot man was in my house, and I wanted a piece of him.

This morning, I’m warming up to the idea…kind of.

I need to talk to this guy. To both of them. After they answer my questions, we’ll see where this goes.

As I park alongside their apartment building, the craziness of the whole situation hits me. Am I really going to do this?

Apparently so, because I’m marching up the walkway and hitting the buzzer.

  “Hello?” comes Frank’s voice.

I clear my throat. “It’s Violet. Can I talk to you?”

  A long moment passes.

  “Hello?” I ask.

The buzzer sounds, admitting my entrance.

I rush up to the guys’ floor, my heart pounding. There’s a big part of me that’s dying to turn back around, but the rest of me needs to see what will happen next.

At their door, I knock before I have the chance to turn tail and run.

The door whips open right away. Frank is there, grinning wide, his dark hair damp and standing on end. I’m not gonna lie; I would really like to get my hands in there.

“Well, hello.” Somehow, he smiles even bigger.

  “Is Sean here?”

Just as I say his name, Sean appears from his bedroom. His eyebrows go up at the sight of me.

“Violet. What are you doing here?”

“I had to talk to you both.”

  T
heir faces both somber up, and they exchange a quick look.

“What the fuck did you do, Frank?” Sean asks.

“Hey! Why do you think it was me? She said she wants to talk to the both of us.”

“Right,” I say, pushing past Frank and letting myself in.

They join me in their living room, Frank sitting down on the couch and looking as chill as he can, feet up and fingers laced behind his head. Sean bounces on his feet nearby, arms crossed. For some reason, seeing he’s also uncomfortable makes me feel a little better.

I take a long breath. I didn’t prepare a speech, but maybe I should have. I have a feeling I’m going to be stumbling over a lot of words.

“First of all, you guys are assholes.”

“We’ve been called worse,” Frank quips.

“Frank,” Sean hisses. “Shut the fuck up.” He turns his eyes on me. “Is this about…”

I wait, but he won’t finish.

“You can’t even say it, can you? It’s about the bet that you placed on me.”

Sean purses his lips. He’s ashamed. Good.

Behind me, Frank speaks up. “To be fair, we placed it on ourselves, not on you. It’s to see who can get you pregnant first.”

I rub my tired eyes. “I know what the bet is, Frank.”

“Frank, just shut it for a minute,” Sean growls.

I glare at the man in front of me. “You’re not innocent either, Sean.”

His nostrils flare. “Violet, I didn’t mean for you to get hurt.”

  “Well, that’s what happened.”

His shoulders slump, and he won’t meet my eyes. Though I expected this moment to feel good, it’s a punch to the gut. After everything we’ve been through, including all the years apart, seeing Sean hurt is painful.

I close my eyes and press my fingertips to my lids, creating stars in the darkness.

“Do you want something to drink?” Sean asks. “Stay. Have a seat.”

I open my eyes. “Sure. Water would be great.”

Frank pats the cushion next to him. “There’s a spot right over here, Violet.”

I take it, aware of Sean’s eyes on us as he gets me a bottle of water. Frank notes it as well, and sends his own aggressive glare Sean’s way.

The muscles between my legs tighten, and I have to shift my weight on the cushion. If there was any doubt before, there isn’t now. Two men fighting over me is definitely a turn-on. It doesn’t even matter that it’s the stupid bet that’s important to them, and not me.

Sean brings me the bottle of water and sits on the coffee table across from me.

  “Thanks,” I mutter.

All eyes are on me as I take a long drink and screw the cap back on. “So.”

  Sean nods.

I look over at Frank. “I wanted to kill you last night…both of you, actually.”

“Do we have to apologize again?” Frank asks.

  “You didn’t apologize once.”

  “Oh.”

“As I was saying, this whole bet thing is dumb and pretty disrespectful. But…”

  Sean shifts closer, listening intently.

  “But?” Frank repeats.

“I’m willing to go along with it.” Before either one of them can respond, I hold up my hand. “I want you guys to show me which one of you is more worthwhile of being my sperm donor.”

  Frank’s face wrinkles. “Huh?”

  Sean looks equally confused. “How?”

I shrug. “If I knew that, I’d just pick one of you.”

“Violet,” Sean starts, “I might have already gotten you pregnant.”

“And I might have,” Frank points out, his chest puffing up.

“But maybe neither of you have.” I give them each a long look. “So, who am I going to pick to do the job?”

Frank and Sean look at each other at the same time, and I can nearly see their competitive streaks growing.

“Figure it out.” I stand up. “Find some way to show me you’re worthwhile.”

“Wait.” Frank pops up from the couch. “I have today off. Come shooting with me.”

“Hold on.” Sean is between us in the blink of an eye. “You can’t just hog her time like that.”

“I can do anything I want.” Frank grins.

They’re so close I’m nearly sandwiched between the two of them, my shoulders brushing both their chests. I bite on the inside of my lip to stop a smile. If they know how much I like this, it’s not going to be nearly as fun. Or successful.

  “I’ll go,” I tell Frank. “I’m free.”

Sean growls like a feral dog. “Tonight,” he says. “You’re mine.”

“I’m busy tonight.” It’s true. I have a dinner meeting with a new artist.

  “Tomorrow, then,” Sean quickly says.

His green eyes catch mine, and the intensity there makes my breathing hitch. I quickly look away, though. Sean’s always had a way of both getting under my skin and making me come undone. I’m through with letting him do either one of those things.

“Text me,” I tell Frank. “I need to go right now.”

It’s not true, but being so close to both of these guys at the same time has me feeling dizzy. I’ve never slept with two guys in such a short amount of time. Not that it’s something I’m opposed to. It’s just…new.

Like everything else in my life right now.

I leave faster than I came in, my hands shaking, my heart pounding, my stomach churning…and a smile pulling at my lips.

  Chapter 14

  Violet

Mr. Mochi’s nails click along the hardwood floor of my living room, adding to my annoyance.

“Mr. Mochi,” I snap at the little terrier, “Sit down.”

He cocks his head and looks at me, probably thinking I’m going to give him a treat.

Kaila appears in the doorway, a glass of lemonade in her hand.

  “Where is he taking you?”

  “Shooting.” I shrug. “Where, I don’t know.”

She pouts. “I can’t believe you have two guys, and I still have zero.”

  “You have Mr. Mochi.”

At his name, the fluffy terrier finally sits. Kaila pouts.

  “I’m talking about a boyfriend.”

“Don’t use that word. You know that’s not what either of these guys is.”

Kaila sits down on the very couch Frank and I got busy on.

  “They’re better than nothing.”

At the sound of a car pulling into my little driveway, I turn back toward the window. Frank. My stomach flips, and he beeps the horn.

“Is that him?” Kaila leans forward in excitement. “I want to meet him!”

“That might be a little weird.”

She frowns. “Okay. When are you back? We should have a safety word. If you need me to call the police, text me to get your laundry.”

I loop my purse over my shoulder and slip my cellphone into my pocket.

“That’s actually a good idea, in general. I don’t think I’ll need it today, though. Frank is…”

Who is Frank? Some hot guy who’s wild in bed, who also happens to be Sean’s best friend. In my mind, that means I can trust him.

“I’ll see you in a little bit,” I promise, opening the front door.

“Text me when you want me to order the pizza!”

  “Will do. Bye!”

Closing the door behind me, I scurry across the yard. Frank having honked his horn and not even come to the door says a lot about him. In other words, I really couldn’t have expected anything different.

“Hi,” I say, climbing in the passenger’s side.

“Hey.” He gives me a slow grin. “Whose car is that?” He nods at the one parked in front of his.

“That’s my friend Kaila’s. We’re hanging out later tonight.”

“She’s gonna sit in there all alone?”

I decide not to tell him she came over early because she was hoping to sneak a peek at him.

  “Her pl
ace isn’t as nice as mine,” I claim. “The neighbors are really loud.”

  “Ah. Ready to go?”

“Yeah.” I buckle up. “Where are we going again?”

“Shooting. There’s a sick spot up in the mountains I found the other day.”

We ride in silence for a while, Frank taking the quickest road out of the city like a native who knows each and every highway.

“What you did is cool,” he finally says. I warily glance over at him. “Sean is pissed,” he adds, smiling wider.

  “You sound happy about that.”

  Frank chuckles. “Yeah.”

“Aren’t you guys best friends? Why would you want to make him upset?”

Frank looks over at me. “You don’t get guys, do you?”

  “Apparently not.”

We ride quietly for another minute or so. As weird as I sometimes find this guy, his presence is also pretty nice. He’s easy to be around.

“So, you don’t mind this?” I ask. “You having to prove yourself to me?”

“I know I’m going to win,” he simply says.

  Of course.

Frank takes us to an area I’ve never visited, going down a gravel driveway and driving deeper into the woods. I roll the window down and let my hand catch the breeze.

“What is this place?” I ask.

“Don’t worry. We can shoot here.”

He didn’t answer my question at all, but I’m surprised to find I don’t care.

Pulling the car off the gravel road, Frank parks under some trees and pops the trunk. Out come a blanket, which he lays on the grass, and cases with several different guns in them. They all look freshly polished.

  “Ever shot a gun before?”

  “No,” I admit.

  “Guess I’ll be your first.”

  I guffaw. “I guess so.”

“Here. Let’s go over there.” He points to a clearing nearby, and I follow him over a fallen log and around a few trees to get to it.

Sitting down cross-legged, I watch as he scrapes some bark off a tree with a pocket knife.

“That’s our mark,” he says, coming back to join me.

  “I’ll never hit that.”

“Don’t say that. You haven’t even started. Believe in yourself.”
