Separation Page 14

Matt loosened his hold on me and brushed his lips across my cheekbone. “We still need to actually talk about things with them. It was like there was an elephant in the room today.”

I couldn’t suppress a quiet snort. “How do you do that? I was thinking exactly that.”

“Great minds, and all that. We are two halves of a whole, aren’t we?” Matt grinned. “I kept wanting to broach it, but I decided it has to be down to them. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

The following day, Malcolm and Julie collected us in their car and drove to Torquay. They wanted to explore a little more of the area while they were visiting, and we’d offered to show them around. We sat in the backseat, hands resting in our laps, glancing sideways at each other like a pair of naughty school kids. I sucked in my cheeks in an effort not to laugh, and noticed Matt doing the same. He was probably thinking the same.

“Look, guys…” Malcolm began, glancing in the rear view mirror. “We’ve had enough time to get used to this now. You don’t have to be so careful around us.” He turned his attention back to the road, and Julie twisted in her seat to look at us.

“Mattie, I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to process you and Tam being together. You know how I felt about it first. But you are obviously happy. I—your dad and I—don’t want to spoil things for you by making you feel you can’t be yourselves.”

“What are you saying, Mum?” Matt asked, clearly surprised.

“Just that we are not going to be uncomfortable or disapproving if you show each other affection. We should probably have talked about this yesterday. I don’t want you to feel that you have to behave differently to please me or your dad. We’ve got used to the fact that you’re together as a couple. We love you both.”

My eyes widened, and Matt grinned. “Love you, too, Mum.”

Julie faced forward again, and Matt quickly slid his hand along the seat to find mine. He laced our fingers together and I squeezed his hand tight. The acceptance of his parents was something he’d longed for, but never really expected. Their tolerance was all he thought would be offered.

We spent the day exploring Torquay, and ate lunch in a salad bar. An Italian restaurant provided a delicious meal in the evening, before Malcolm drove us home. He and Julie hugged Matt, then me. They were to return to their hotel in Salcombe for the night, and return home the next morning. This time when they drove away, we stood in front of the cottage, Matt’s arm around my shoulders, as we waved good-bye. When the car disappeared from view, we turned as one and went indoors. Everything had finally fallen into place, and it seemed we had nothing more to worry about.

I realized Matt had been speaking to me, when he waved his hand in front of my face.

  “Sorry, did you say something?”

“You were miles away. What are you thinking about?”

“Just how perfect this is. And how long I waited for it. You didn’t even know until your birthday, but I waited three years for you.”

Matt grinned. “It’s a shame we can’t tell anybody here except Stef. The story about you going to London for a weekend and us meeting in that club is boring in comparison.”

“Well, at least we know different. It was the club that started it all.”

“You tried to make out it was that guy, Jaz, turning you on.” Matt chuckled and kissed my ear.

My cheeks warmed as I remember my utter mortification when my erection rubbed up against Matt. I moved closer to let him feel it again. “You knew it wasn’t him.”

“When I got over my shock, I hoped it wasn’t. I wanted you all to myself.”

“You have me. All of me.” I slid my hands down his back and squeezed his ass, molding myself to his body. “It almost feels like we’re one person.”

“Well, I guess we are in a way.”

I turned my head, and brought our lips together once more. We could have gone through our whole lives without each other, never knowing the deep connection we had found, and the intense love that had grown so quickly between us. I felt like the luckiest man alive to have found so much in Matt, and I knew it was the exact same feeling he had when he looked at me.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy.

Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of eight, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties. Posting stories based on some of her favourite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing "hobby" more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad dog called Casper, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races home afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and job, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.
