“I guess…” he said shyly.
“It’s going to mean leaving your mom. And your brothers and sisters, too. Is that alright?”
He nodded, though tears were already gathering in the corners of his eyes.
“I don’t want to take you unless you’re sure you can be brave. Can you be brave? Make your dad proud?”
Max stood up a little taller. “Yeah,” he promised. “I’ll be brave.”
I tossed Sable a glance. She nodded. “Yeah, little buddy,” I said. “I know you will.”
