The Surgeon Was a Lady Page 24

by Paul Kelly

“You’re gonna be an uncle in the autumn, Seyone,” she said, “And that means, I’ll be an auntie too, doesn’t it?”

Willie held her breath for a few seconds as instructed by the midwife as she listened carefully to the strange sound that came from her stomach. She smiled happily.

“Well, we talked about having a little puppy-dog,” she said, “But I never thought I would ever be pregnant... Never that Paul and I would have a little baby.”

The midwife wrapped her stethoscope and returned it to its case.

“I think you have a Diva... in there, by the sound of all that row, Doctor Fehrenbach,” she said and Willie looked up at the ceiling... Her memories were proud, but painful...

“An opera singer with football boots, I shouldn’t wonder,” she said as she remembered a certain young man who had lost his football in the park and who knew that his Daddy would find it for him. ‘I knew my Daddy would find it for me... he would never give up... ’ “And I said I would find you again my darling, didn’t I? I didn’t know where or when or how... but I knew I would, somehow... and now you are here with me... part of me... and I’ll never ever let you go again.”
