Chapter 1
Strobe lights pulsed out a harsh staccato, giving the sea of partiers a patina of disjointed menace and the bass pounded out a grinding industrial beat that encouraged the dancers to throw their bodies into one another with a feverish, desperate abandon normally reserved for sexual encounters. But that’s what this all was anyway, wasn’t it? Public foreplay that made the participants feel deviant and reckless and sexy, while they probably went and screwed in the backseat of some sedan in a barely eight minute quickie that neither really remembered in the morning. Except for the lucky few who picked up an extra present that required a trip to the clinic. They certainly had a memory from their drunken club fuck, whether they wanted it or not.
Kevin realized he was being a cynical dick at the same time his buddy nailed him the arm. “Man, wipe that scowl off your face before you scare the ladies away.”
“Are you kidding me? The chicks in here think mean and scary is hot.”
“Yeah, well looking at you is ruining my buzz, so fucking stop,” Chris grumbled.
The group approached the bar, five men who worked for a living and rode their bikes on the weekend, scattering emo Goth boys in their wake. They were dressed mostly in black, like the rest of the crowd, some wore leather and some even sported a few chains or studs here and there. Well, except for Derek. He leaned more towards businessman out on the town and didn’t have a bike, but he still didn’t look like a pansy ass. Bottom line, not one of the five could be described as looking even remotely mournful or soulful or any other sappy word that ended in ‘ful’. They were men and looked like it, which meant the hair in the eyes, oh-so-angry/depressed/bored youngsters moved out of the way as soon as they realized Kevin and his friends did not give one flying fuck about the pleather wearer’s fragile, fragile emotions. Or their hair.
“Beer,” Kevin grunted at the waif like bartender whose skin was so pale he swore he could see through it right to his…no her, bones. A draft in a plastic cup hit the bar in front of him and sloshed over his hand before he could stop himself from staring at her scrawny arms and grimacing. He looked up to find her shooting daggers at him with a hand out for cash.
“Two bucks, asshole.”
He didn’t even bother to argue with her assessment of his personality. His friends had dragged him out of the house, using threats of kidnapping to force him into the car. Then they insisted they come to this shitty industrial bar in an old warehouse that looked like it was going to fall down around their ears, but that he knew had been rebuilt not that long ago and staged to look like a post-apocalyptic nightmare. He would have been perfectly content to sit on the couch with a six-pack, just like he’d done every other Friday night for the last two and a half months, reflecting on his life. More like wallowing in a nasty vat of embarrassment and self-pity according to everyone else. But what did they expect when he’d spent a year and a half with a woman and discovered he’d misjudged her so badly she refused his engagement proposal on New Year’s Eve by telling him she’d been waiting for the right time to break up with him since Halloween.
Ever since he told her she couldn’t wear the sexy nurse costume that barely covered her ass and let her nipples peek over the top. First he suggested she put on some tights and a tank top underneath, but she wouldn’t do it. Said it ruined the whole point of the costume. Apparently the ‘whole point’ was to put her entire body on display like a dime store hooker. He was all for his woman looking sexy, but there was a line between ‘sexy’ and ‘practically naked’ that Krista didn’t seem to grasp. She also couldn’t understand why Kevin would care, or why he thought he could tell her what to wear. They’d had a window breaking screaming match, she’d done most of the screaming, that had the neighbors threatening to call the police if she didn’t stop shrieking curse words loud enough for their two children to hear inside the house. He’d adamantly refused to take her anywhere looking like that, until she finally relented since the party they were attending was hosted by one of his friends from work, and she had nowhere else to go and no ride to get there since he’d picked her up.
Things quieted down after that and Kevin thought all was well. They’d even discussed the fight and he’d calmly explained that he loved her and only wanted to make sure she looked appropriate and didn’t make a fool of herself. Which she would have done if she’d shown up in that tramp outfit the way she originally intended. None of the other woman there were dressed like that. Some leaned towards the racy end of the spectrum, but it was like Krista had intentionally bought the costume a size too small for the sole purpose of letting all her lady bits hang out.
When she had agreed with his explanation without an argument he should have known something was up. The woman liked to argue about anything and everything, which Kevin initially thought showed she could think for herself and had spirit, but towards the end suspected was just a contrary personality and a need to always be right. Somehow he convinced himself that it would all work out, that she accepted that he was in charge of certain things and only wanted to protect her. He told himself this even when she begged off of Thanksgiving with his family to go to her grandparent’s house in Maine. Even when she gave him a box of socks and underwear and a gift card to a liquor store for Christmas, when he’d bought them a cruise to go on in the spring. Hell, he liked booze; she knew he liked booze, so it was all good. Though the little voice in the back of his skull questioned why she spent less than hundred bucks on him when he’d spent thousands. But hey, it wasn’t about the money, right?
No, the signs were all there. Canceling dates to go out with her friends for a ‘girls night’, showing up at his house for a quick fuck then leaving without staying over saying he needed to get his sleep for work. Even after the present disparity, which she didn’t seem to notice or try to make excuses for-another big freaking clue-he pressed on with his to plan to propose. The ring was bought. He’d told his family, and they’d supported him but weren’t too happy with the plan, not that he noticed that at the time either.
Then the disaster night happened, the worst New Years Eve ever. He took her to dinner at a new
restaurant she’d been dying to try, schemed with the waiter to have him bring champagne with dessert. Even had some friends and family come in to wait at the bar so they could celebrate together after he popped the question. He got down on one knee next to her chair with the velvet covered box in his hand, and just when he opened his mouth to say the words that would hopefully result in the best moment of his life he heard her say, “Oh no.” And not in a good way. In an ‘Oh shit what the hell is this guy doing’ way. He looked up to find her watching him with a pitying smirk on her face, like she knew a secret that would rock his world. And she did.
“Kevin, sit down,” she said, “We need to talk.”
He’d been so stunned and confused he obeyed without comment.
“I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell you,” she continued, every word driving into his brain like an iron spike. “Or hoping you would get the hint and back off.” How she managed to make it sound accusing still boggled his mind. “But this just isn’t going to work between us. You’re way too controlling and bossy.”
The ridiculousness of her statement kick started his ability to speak. “How could you possibly say that? I barely see you twice a week.” He controlled the urge to get up and start ranting, only because the entire dining room was watching them and he could see Derek’s worried face behind Krista. They were all there, witnessing the entire scene, though luckily far enough away that they couldn’t hear. Not that they needed to since it was obvious it wasn’t going according to plan.
“Which is why I thought you’d wise up to the fact I wanted to break things off,” she hissed, glancing at their audience.
“Why didn’t you just tell me you wanted to break up? How long have you felt this way?” He wanted this to be over quickly, right this second, but he had to know the truth now. There was no way in hell he’d be calling her up later to try and chat about what went wrong. Not after this humiliation.
“I’ve been trying to give you signs ever since you freaked out on Halloween. I barely ever have sex with you; I blew off our dates. For fuck’s sake I even bought you socks for Christmas!” Her voice rose until even the group at the bar heard. He knew it because he saw his father flinch. “How stupid could you be to not see it?”
Kevin wanted to toss the table and the two hundred dollar bottle of champagne across the room, but every eye in the place was glued to their drama, taking it in with rapt attention like they were watching a real live soap opera. Which it was, right down to the jilted lover and beautiful bitch. Well, that’s all they were getting tonight. He wasn’t about to get himself hauled off to jail for busing the place up over this cunt. And that’s what she was. He didn’t use the word often, but the shoe definitely fit in this case.
“Obviously I’m stupid enough to think you loved me and wanted to marry me. Thanks for showing me just what a bitch you are before you took the ring.” He stood up, shoving the chair back with his thighs, grabbed the box and the bottle off the table and walked over to the bar where every single person he cared about stood, watching his progress across the room but refusing to meet his eyes.
Never one to walk away with grace, Krista let a parting shot rip from behind him. “Oh look, you’ve got all your friends and family here to see just what an ass you are. You thought I loved you when I’ve been trying to figure out how to leave you for months. How pathetic.”
A few of the patrons let out gasps, and one even let out a “what a bitch," loudly, but Kevin didn’t turn around. Just kept his face forward and stayed focused on his goal- an open seat next to Derek. The man saw Kevin’s trajectory and turned the stool so he could plant his ass in it without having to worry about fighting his instinct to break the thing in two. It was some fancy ass piece of metal and wood that probably cost more than his living room set at home.
“You all right bro?” Derek asked cautiously, making sure Kevin wasn’t about to lose his shit.
“I’m not talking about it tonight,” Kevin replied, leaving absolutely no room for argument. “Right now I’m drinking. Will you drive me home later?”
“Absolutely.”
And that was exactly what he did. People mingled around him but no one pressed him for more details, no one else asked if he was okay. His brother gave him a pat on the back before he left, that Kevin knew meant Keith would be there if Kevin needed him, but other than that Kevin drank. And made the decision that he would never be in a relationship where a woman pulled a fast one on him again. He would always know how she felt and where they stood, and he’d make sure she understood that bossy and controlling was just part of the package. Later that night Derek poured him onto the couch and when he woke up the next morning he refused to discuss the situation with anyone. And he still hadn’t.
This was probably why he found himself standing in a bar after being threatened with bodily harm for not leaving the house, except to go to work, for the last two months. His friends were sick of his refusal to do anything remotely social, but damn it, he wasn’t fit company yet. They been there five minutes and he’d already been an asshole to the bartender and had Chris bitch about his attitude.
He leaned in to yell over the music. The song had changed and the strobes had switched over to a sweeping wash of color thankfully, but it was still too loud to hear shit. “Take me home man; I’m too much of grumpy bastard to be out.”
Chris looked at him and mouthed one word, “No," before turning his gaze back to the dance floor.
“Fuck!” Kevin knew his friends were entrenched. They weren’t letting him go home to drown his sorrows solo tonight. “Why are we here then?” This wasn’t their normal type of hangout. They preferred someplace with a pool table and darts, and where you could actually have fucking conversation.
“There’s some chick Ryan wants to hook up with that said she’d be here.”
Of course there was. Ryan was the biggest man-whore of the bunch, and even though they’d claimed it was a guy’s night Ryan always had an ulterior motive. Mainly getting laid.
Derek moved up next to Kevin, scanning the room now that you could actually look around without getting a headache. They stood in comfortable silence for a while. Not that it was silent, they just didn’t talk, and Kevin let the music seep into him. It actually wasn’t half bad and he started to relax and enjoy himself.
They ordered another beer and stood at the bar, watching the scene around them. The place was huge, with the dance floor sunk in the center of the room and the bar surrounding it one level up, making it look like a roiling pit of human bodies when the DJ really got going.
During a lull in the music, when the noise dropped from ear drum shattering to just loud and the bass stopped feeling like a giant defibrillator going off under his feet, Kevin heard Derek say, “Oh shit, my girl’s sister is here.”
That made his ears perk up. Kevin remembered her from a party at Connie and Nate’s house, shortly before the beginning of the end for him and Krista. He hadn’t been on the market, but that night it was impossible not to notice Angie. It had been a scene on par with his fucked up proposal. She’d walked in with her sister, cool as can be but with a sly look on her face, like she knew the shitstorm she was about to create. Connie had gone through the roof as soon as she spotted Angie, screeching and carrying on about what a whore Angie was and trying to go after the woman to get her out of the house.
Seems Angie had a bit of reputation for going after other women’s men, and she did it often at the bar they all hung out at. Kevin didn’t remember her, but he never brought Krista to that particular place-she actually refused to go because it was a ‘dive’, another sign she wasn’t the woman for him-so Angie had never paid him any attention, and he wasn’t looking for any.
That night at Connie and Nate’s she’d been impossible to miss. In full on bitch mode even though her sister clearly had no fucking clue what was happening. Only showing a glimpse of sensitivity when Gina asked if she’d slept with Derek. Then he could see that there was a person under that h
ard, fuck you and the horse you road in on, shell she projected to the world. Kevin was intrigued and thought the man to tame her would be a lucky son of a bitch. If you could turn all that emotion into love and passion, and devotion, then that would be a woman to keep.
“Where is she?” he asked, hoping to hide the interest he felt. The first thing he’d been interested in for two long months.
“Out on the dance floor, sandwiched between those two losers,” Derek said, pointing to the middle of the pit.
Kevin followed Derek’s finger and found her, between two wanna-be rock stars clearly trying to get in her pants, at the same time. He squashed the urge to rush out onto the floor and beat their asses into a pulp since she clearly seemed to be enjoying their attention. The guys surrounded her and all he could see were her hands, thrown over her head as she let loose, shaking her body like she wanted to escape her own skin.
Until one of them reached out and put a hand on her hip, yanking her towards him. She reacted like a startled cat. Her arms flew down to latch onto his. To pull him closer? Nope. She didn’t like the contact at all.
Kevin watched as she tried to get the man’s hand off her, but instead he reached around and took advantage of the fact her hands were busy trying to dislodge his to pull her closer.
“What the fuck?” Derek said, starting towards the dance floor.
Kevin had no clue what came over him but he found himself stopping his friend and saying, “I’ll go deal with it.”
Derek looked back, surprised, “Are you sure? I know you don’t know her very well but she’s calmed down a lot in the last few months. I’m actually really surprised to see her here.”
“That doesn’t matter,” though Kevin was happy to hear it. “She doesn’t want that guy touching her and I’ll go make sure he doesn’t.”
Derek gave him a look that went from surprised to knowing but Derek ignored it. “Okay man, but hurry up. His friend’s getting in on the act.”
Kevin looked up and found that the other guy had shoved himself up against her from behind, and though you might think they were all just dancing really close, he could see Angie’s face between the two of them. And she didn’t look happy.
