Reluctantly, he released Maggie’s hand and began to back out of the room.

“Take good care of her,” he said fiercely.

As Maggie sank into unconsciousness, she had a smile on her face, because Kane’s last words hadn’t sounded much like a request—but more like a threat.

Jill stayed with Kane while they waited. He paced just like a traditional father, and she surreptitiously took pictures of him doing it to show Maggie later. And both of them spent time in silent prayer, because the outcome was by no means certain.

By the time the doctor came out in his green scrubs, Mark had joined them and they all rushed to greet the doctor anxiously. He grinned. “This is the part I love,” he quipped. “I feel like a rock star.”

  “How is she?” Kane demanded.

“She’s doing fine. And you’ve got a beautiful baby boy. You can see him in about an hour. He’ll have to spend some time in the neonatal unit, but his Apgar score isn’t bad for his age. He should be fine.”

All the blood seemed to drain from Kane’s face and Mark and Jill grabbed him, afraid he’d fall to the floor.

“I’m okay,” he told them ruefully. “I’m just so damn relieved….”

When Maggie slowly regained consciousness, she found Kane at her bedside and she came wide awake in a hurry.

  “Kane?”

She was in his arms before she’d finished saying his name. “Everything is fine, darling,” he said, kissing her eyebrows, her temple, her ears. “Benjamin is the most beautiful baby you’ve ever seen and he’s going to be perfectly normal. I swear to you.”

She sighed happily. “When can I see him?”

“As soon as they think you can make it. The nurse will get a wheelchair and I’ll take you over.”

She nodded. “Kane?” she asked, twisting so that she could see his face.

  “Yes?”

“Do you still love me?” She smiled at him. “Or was that a dream I had?”

He laughed low in his throat. “I still love you, Maggie. And when I get you home and you’re well enough, I’m going to love you all over.”

  She giggled. “You promise?”

“You want me to put it in writing?”

“No!” she grimaced. “No more business contracts. I’ll take your word for it.”

She looked into her husband’s face and searched his eyes, wanting reassurance that this was for real and that it wouldn’t slip through her fingers this time. What she saw told her not to worry. Kane had gone to another level and learned to trust a bit more than before.

Reaching out, she laid a hand along the side of his face. She loved him so very much. And now she had hope that they were going to have a real marriage and make a real family. No more business arrangements!

“I’m so lucky,” she told him. “As I look back now, I was having a baby for all the wrong reasons. And you came into the picture and made them all right.”

He kissed her, and she closed her eyes and let herself float in his love.

It was later in the afternoon when Maggie was finally allowed to ride over to the neonatal unit to see her baby. He was in an incubator, but it hadn’t been necessary to hook him up to a ventilator. Still, he was being watched very closely and would probably not be able to go home right away.

Maggie was allowed to hold him and she cooed over him, beaming with joy. “He’s so gorgeous!” she cried. “Look at his tiny little fingernails. Oh Kane, I think he looks just like you.”

“Lucky devil,” he teased. “Just as long as he has his mother’s personality, we’ll do okay.”

She cuddled the baby close, her heart filled with more joy than she’d ever known before. “Kane, how many more babies shall we have?” she asked.

  “Babies? Plural?”

“Sure. You don’t think we’re going to stop at one, do you?”

He hadn’t ever thought about it before. He frowned skeptically. “A house full of kids?”

She nodded happily. “Tons of them, tumbling all over the place. The boys copying everything you do and the girls twisting you around their tiny little fingers.” She sighed blissfully. “You’re going to love them.”

And suddenly he realized she was right. He was going to love them. Just as he loved her and little Ben. He felt very strange and then he realized what it was. For the first time in his life, he was a completely happy man.
