Fallen: An Angel Romance

Alexandriel shook his head. “We’d be idiots to withdraw even further than we already have. It’s what hell would want. It’s time that we looked after all of Creation as we were tasked in the beginning, and not just look to Heaven.”

Zara spun, her arms outstretched and legs flowing as she played with her balance and twirled from foot to foot in rapid steps. Ribbons of Light and Dark trailed from her fingertips, and she spun her hands in intricate movements to leave stunning patterns hanging in the air around her body.

Gracefulness had never been an attribute of hers, but the magic had unlocked a part of her she’d never known existed. It improved the connection and awareness between her mind and her body, and she took advantage of that link.

It had been a few weeks since the night of the ritual, and they had reclaimed Lighthaven with the help of Grace’s relatives and cousins of the other Light mages. Since she no longer had a mentor and she was without equal among the Light mages at wielding magic, she continued practicing and honing her abilities on her own. The magic lessons had been replaced by dance lessons.

  Sometimes, she combined them.

She pulled out of the spin and dipped her body low to the ground, almost scraping her forehead on the flagstones before kicking high and landing with a graceful flourish, trailing Light and Darkness.

Applause startled her, and she jumped up straight.

“That was amazing!” Grace said. “You have to teach me how to do that.”

The Scottish girl stood to the side with Sophie and Ethan. He’d mellowed out since the death of his father, losing his haughty airs. Grace's parents had been nudging them closer together ever since they'd arrived a few days earlier. He’d apologized for the way he’d treated Zara, and on his late father’s behalf. His opinion was that Reginald had been comfortable in his position as the strongest Lightbringer in the enclave, and he resented Zara’s raw power. More years on Earth didn’t always protect from pettiness.

“I don’t know about that,” Zara said. “You have enough trouble walking in a straight line as it is.”

The rest of them laughed, and Grace shrugged. “Straight lines are boring.”

“We’re taking a walk through Central Park. Do you want to come?” Sophie asked.

Zara smiled. It was more of a notification than an invitation—Sophie knew Zara could never turn down a walk in the park.

She wasn’t afraid of going outside any longer. There were few dangers that she couldn’t take care of, and those would grow fewer over time. After the dance lessons and getting used to moving her body, Joseph would teach her his special blend of martial arts and prophecy.

The air had a crispness to it that was new. Summer was nearing an end and the days were growing shorter. It made the other mages edgy, but Zara had no fear of the dark.

As they passed a large oak tree, Zara sensed something different in the air. It wasn’t alarming, but familiar. She glanced over to see Alex leaning against the tree, his emerald angel eyes gleaming.

She stopped and stared, making sure she wasn’t seeing things. The others continued walking, not noticing her occupation.

“You’re here!” Zara wasted no time running to him and jumping at him.

He caught her and pulled her close, kissing her. His lips were as perfect as she’d remembered.

“Hi, Zara,” he said when they stopped to breathe. “I came as fast as I could.”

A throat cleared, and she looked over to see her friends standing awkwardly on the path.

“We’ll go on ahead,” Sophie said. “We’ll see you back at Lighthaven.”

Zara flushed at the display she’d just put on for her friends. “Um, thanks, guys.”

She forgot about the awkwardness when she looked up at Alex’s breathtaking face. After a few weeks without seeing him, she’d begun to doubt her memories, but that was all swept away by the joy of his presence.

  “Want to walk?” he asked.

She slipped her hand into his, and they took a different path than the one the mages used.

There were many things she wanted to ask him, but she started with the most important.

“Will you be able to continue seeing me?”

He squeezed her hand. “The Council has made a decision about what to do with me. I will no longer be a Guardian angel.”

Her heart clenched. “That’s bad, isn’t it? That’s why you were on Earth.”

“That’s right. Instead, they’ve promoted me to archangel and charged me with returning balance to Earth. I will have all the powers and responsibilities that entails, but it means that I will be on earth more often than not. And I will be with you as often as I can. There’s no place I’d rather be.”

A wide smile found her face. “I love you, you know that? You’ll always be my Guardian angel.”

He stopped and drew her close. “I love you, too. And we’ll guard each other.”

That sounded perfect to Zara. She couldn’t ask for a better partner.

  They had much work ahead.

I didn't need another arrogant jerk to distract me from my career.

But there was something about James I couldn't resist, despite how wrong it was. The ex-Marine took control every time we were together, and it felt so good to let him.

Despite how he made me feel, I couldn't shake the conviction that he would destroy me.

  James

Manipulating people is an art, and I'm Michelangelo.

My name is James Stratton. At least, that's the name I'm using right now. I'm a con artist. A grifter. But I only steal from assholes who deserve it.

Kat has no idea that I'm her childhood friend. I've changed. Grown. Matured. And I'm back to get even with the girl who broke my heart.
