Chapter One
There weren’t many things that could throw Tessa off her game. Yet, the caramel-brown-haired man with the body built like a sex god sitting across the table from her did more than unbalance her. Butterflies swarmed her belly, while every inch of her heated as if a fever had suddenly taken over, both inside and out.
It’s just a business dinner.
She was so going to have a word with Avery when she got home. When her twin had recommended Hunter to remodel the law office, she’d failed to mention his ability to bring women to their knees. Or maybe that was Tessa’s sister’s plan all along.
Tessa had been leery to call him at first. Some of Avery’s friends walked the line of the law because she was the owner of a gentlemen’s club. Even though Avery had cleaned it up in the short months since buying the place, Tessa still wondered how trustworthy Hunter was. But Avery had said to call him and ask for references. So Tessa had, and he’d checked out okay.
His dark grey eyes danced with the beginnings of a smile a moment before he glanced down at the folder he held before sliding it across the table. “These are just preliminary sketches. Anything can be changed.”
Ignoring the impulse to reach for him, to touch him, she forced her gaze to the file and opened it with shaky hands. Had he noticed? God, she hoped not. She shuffled through several printed floor plans. They were labeled by section and depicted the first floor of the building she owned with her two partners at Barnes, McDonnell, and Nelson Law Offices.
It took her a few minutes to recognize the changes made to the current layout. “You didn’t change much.”
“I really didn’t see a need to.” He leaned forward and pointed to the left side of one of the printouts. His subtle, spicy, masculine scent coiled around her. Her heart rate kicked up a few beats per minute. “I think this would make a great space for a storefront. Maybe a small restaurant or something. We could move the reception desk to the center of the space, facing the front doors.”
“I like that idea, but I was hoping for a more open look.”
Compared to most of the other buildings in the Long Beach area, theirs wasn’t very large. In fact, it was more like a mid-size mansion from Beverly Hills.
As Hunter reached for the pages, his hand brushed hers, and a jolt like an electric current shot up her arm, spreading through her body. She fought a moan and eased her hand out of his reach.
She must be coming down with something. It was the only explanation. Well, maybe not. It’d been a few years since she’d dated. Men were...well, men. They usually only wanted one thing. Plus, dating was exhausting. She wanted a man to like her for her and not because she was some kind of trophy to hang on his arm.
“I thought you might say that so I did a second design.” Hunter pulled out a totally different version of the plan. The reception desk was still located in the center, but the space surrounding it was open with sitting areas tucked in the corners with small round tables and chairs. Cozy and comfortable.
“Oh. That’s perfect.”
She glanced up in time to see his brilliant smile reveal a flash of perfect white teeth against a two-day-old dusting of facial hair. It was a good thing she was sitting because had she been standing, she would have fallen on her ass after her knees gave out.
When she closed the folder, he covered her hand with his. Desire flooded her whole body, making her ache in places she hadn’t thought possible. Her heart hammered in her head, and damn if she didn’t want to be kissed by him. She would kiss him—if she weren’t so damn chicken.
He traced his thumb lightly over her hand, sending pinpricks of desire straight to her core. Then he leaned into her across the table. Her breaths came more frequently, almost pants. When he spoke, his tone was low. “Are you married?”
Blinking, she withdrew her hand from his and sat back in her chair. This was a business meeting, not a date. What the hell was she doing? Flirting?
“I’m married to my job.”
“I can’t believe there’s not a man or two in your life.”
Tessa laughed nervously. “You have the wrong twin.”
One side of his sensual, kissable mouth shifted into a wicked smile as he lifted his beer to his lips. “Oh, I have the right twin.”
Unease mixed with a sense of awkwardness slipped into her mind. She decided to redirect the conversation to him. She hated talking about herself. From the tease in his tone and the gleam in his gaze, Tessa guessed Hunter wanted more than a business meeting. Besides, she was curious about him. Not that she was considering seeing him again outside of the remodel project. “How long have you known my sister?”
“Almost three years. I took a part-time security job at the club. It was only supposed to be temporary, but I stayed around because Rocko was an ass to the girls.” Hunter’s eyes darkened briefly at the mention of the former owner of Lola’s Gentlemen’s Club.
About six months ago, Avery, with Tessa’s help, had bought the gentlemen’s club from Rocko and had since cleaned it up. She’d also made it a safe, respectable place. The girls were now servers that gave private dances—under the watchful eye of guards.
“Do you still work there?” Tessa wondered if Hunter was one of the guards.
One large shoulder lifted. “When Avery needs me to. My contracting company keeps me pretty busy.”
She nodded as she sipped her water. An awkward silence formed between them. Tessa picked at her half-eaten mashed potatoes, not knowing what to say.
“Tessa.”
Her heart jumped, and her panties dampened at his husky tone. Really? She needed to get out of there. However, she didn’t want to be rude. After all, they would have to work together periodically while the office remodel took place.
Taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly, she focused on his face. A strong jawline faded into high cheekbones. His nose was slightly bent as if he’d had it broken once. Heat traveled to her cheeks, and she forced her gaze away from him.
“The plans are great,” she said again. “Can you send them to my office by morning? I’d like to show Cole and Kenton and get their approvals right away.”
He was silent for a moment, drawing her gaze back to him. A slow, seductive smile lifted his lips. “I’ll email you the digital files tonight.”
Her heart pounded, the pace increasing by the minute. If she didn’t get out of there, she was going to drag the hot-as-hell contractor to the nearest bathroom or closet and have her way with him.
Tessa, you’ve lost your mind.
And on that note, it was time to go—take a cold shower and wash the naughty thoughts of Hunter away. “Thank you.” She stood but stilled as he wrapped his fingers around her wrist. All he had to do was say the words...
“Where are you going?”
She faked a yawn, which then turned into a real one. “5:00 AM comes too soon.”
Mischief entered his grey gaze. “How are you getting home?”
Damn. She didn’t have her car. Hunter had picked her up at the office. That should have been her first clue that the evening would turn into something more personal. Wait. It was a business meeting. Nothing else.
Offering him a warm smile, she eased out of his grip. “I can take a cab.”
“Let me drive you home.”
Defeat washed over her at the quiet plea in his voice. Or maybe it was the longing in his gaze. The same yearning she felt much too often.
He had driven her to the restaurant. It would be rude to decline his offer to get her home safely. Wouldn’t it? “If it’s no trouble.”
Satisfaction flashed across his face as he pulled out his wallet and threw some cash on the table before standing. “It would be an honor.”
Breathe, Tessa. It wasn’t like her to be nervous around people. Sure, she was the quiet twin, the more reserved sister, but she was also an adult and liked to have fun. When it came to men, she enjoyed flirting as muc
h as any red-blooded woman.
Yet, Hunter was different. Everything about him set her on edge and made her want to run.
“Are you okay?” he asked while opening the door to his Toyota Tundra.
Nodding, she hopped in. “Yes, just a little tired.”
Relief washed away some of the tension when he seemed to accept her excuse and closed the door. Avery was going to laugh at her for weeks for how badly she let Hunter unnerve her.
The ten-minute drive to her oceanfront condo was quiet and seemed much longer than it really was. Hunter pulled to a stop at the front of the building. “I look forward to your call tomorrow.”
She glanced at him, forgetting for a moment about the remodel. “Oh, yes. I’ll call as soon as Cole and Kenton look at the plans.”
A spark flashed in his eyes before the grey darkened slightly. He cupped her cheek, the warmth of his palm seeping into her flesh. She sucked in a breath as he leaned forward. Dizzying need pulsed within her. She should exit the truck. Kissing him would not be a good thing...
Once his lips pressed to hers, all reason dissipated. His soft, demanding mouth moved to allow his tongue to slip through the seam of her lips. Hot desire consumed her as their tongues met and tangled together.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, tugging him closer. Her pussy pulsed, aching for his touch.
Much too soon, he broke the kiss and rested his forehead against hers. “I want to see you again. Outside of work. Take you on a real date.”
Her breaths were fast, and she tried to calm the rush in her veins. Yet all she could manage to say was, “Yes.”
Any man who could kiss like that was worth pursuing—or getting pursued by.
He drew away and squeezed her hand. “I’ll pick you up Friday at the office?”
“No, meet me here at seven.”
He smiled and lifted her knuckles to his mouth and placed a kiss on them. “I look forward to it.”
“Me, too. Good night, Hunter.”
“Night, Tessa.”
She slid out of the truck and made her way to her penthouse, her head still buzzing as she exited the elevator to her private foyer.
Oh, God. She had a date. With Hunter, the sex god.
Chapter Two
Tessa held a dark green, thigh-length tunic against her torso and studied her reflection. The lacy fabric matched her emerald-green eyes perfectly. Although, with her red hair, she was a strand of lights short of a Christmas tree. “I don’t know.”
