“Darling—”
“No, you’ve told me enough for today. Or the hour, at least.” She laughed at herself and kissed him. “But I might need to know it a lot. Remember that I’m learning how to do the long-term thing.”
“Understood.”
“One more thing—I want you to have dinner with my parents. They don’t like to be in the same room, so that means two dinners.”
He sighed. “A mighty penance, indeed. Perhaps I shall force my family upon you, as well.”
A thrill of gladness came with that, along with a shiver of trepidation. “Will they disapprove of me—my age and so forth?”
“I won’t care if they do.”
“Ho-kay.” She pondered. This was what she’d asked for. A chance for them, to live in the moment and see how things went. “I’m ready. Sign me up.”
Alec lifted her hand and kissed it, his breath brushing over her skin as he recognized the words she’d used at the beginning. But she understood much more of what she really wanted now, didn’t she? Not reckless or stupid. Bold and brave.
“We’ll take it as slow as you like. However you want to handle the office stuff, we’ll sort it out. You can set the rules.”
He meant it, too, and her heart overflowed. “I like it when you set the rules. As long as we can negotiate, of course.”
His lips curved and his hands tightened on hers. “Naturally. There will be meetings. Tim offered to mediate for you with me.”
“That would be an interesting conversation.”
“Wicked woman. Of course you would think that.”
“But you don’t mind, because you’re not ashamed of me, right?”
“No.” He said it firmly, then feathered his fingers over her cheek. “I am the envy of every man alive. I don’t want you to quit your job over this. Not for me. For you.”
“I might—if I find a better one. After all, I need to catch up with you, so I can keep you in the manner to which you’ve become accustomed.” She wiggled closer, angled in to brush his lips with a kiss. “We don’t have to know everything this minute. Let’s see how things go. Right now we have an unexpected day off and I believe you owe me serious make-up sex. Yet again.”
“Alas for me. What have you in mind?”
“The other way around. You owe me that fantasy still.” She felt herself thawing, warming to the answering gleam in his eye. “And I’m wearing this suit. Perhaps you owe me a performance evaluation, Mr. Knight?”
“I bought you another pink blouse.”
“Did you buy three?”

Jeffe Kennedy took the crooked road to writing, stopping off at neurobiology, religious studies and environmental consulting before her creative writing began appearing in places like Redbook, Puerto del Sol, Wyoming Wildlife, Under the Sun and Aeon.
