Korean table manners
마 리 와우, This is great! 근석 씨, 이게 뭐예요?
근 석 This is a traditional table setting.
마 리 So many dishes, including 밥 and 국.
근 석 Well, today I will tell you about 한국 테이블 매너(Korean table manners).
We put 밥 on the left and 국 on the right. Our spoon and chopsticks are placed on the right of 국. We put the main dish that everyone shares in the center.
마 리 It’s very complicated. Are there any other table manners?
근 석 The eldest person begins eating first. The 밥 or 국 bowl should not be held in your hands while eating. You should not use a spoon and chopsticks at the same time. And do not leave the spoon or chopsticks standing in the rice as this symbolizes their use by the dead. When you are invited to other people’s homes, don’t leave rice in your dish, if possible.
마 리 OK! Thanks for teaching me 한국 테이블 매너. 근석 씨, invite me to your house sometime. I will clear my plate. Don’t worry!

① 바트 씨, 어디(에) 가요?
어디 is ‘where’, 가요 is ‘go’, and –에 is a place marker. So, 바트 씨, 어디에 가요? means ‘Baht, where are you going?’. Here 바트 씨 is being called. Lately, Koreans tend to omit the 에.
② 바트 씨 어디(에) 있어요?
있어요 is ‘exist’. So 바트 씨 어디에 있어요? means ‘Where is Baht?’. Here 바트 씨 is a subject different from 바트 씨 in ①
③ 저기(에) 있어요.
When we point to a place we want to indicate, we use 저기에 있어요. In this phrase, 저기 means ‘there’. As elsewhere, 에 can be omitted.
Grammar
● place noun + 에 : at / on / in
This is used before 가요(go) / 와요(come) / 있어요(is). It can be omitted before 가요 and 와요.
•식당에 가요. I’m going to a restaurant.
•유나 씨 도서관에 있어요. Yuna is at the library.
•어디에 가요? Where are you going?
