“I said what a ba...” before she could finish he spun over and grabbing her he pushed his lips to hers, kissing her passionately, hungrily. She fell onto him, her hands covered in herbs she placed them around his neck and hung on tight as if her whole life depended on it. She could feel his energy flowing through her it was like a drug, she breathed deeply taking it all in, her body quivered.
“I love you so much,” he whispered, releasing her and brushing the hair away from her eyes. “I wish we were alone.”
“So do I, I love you too,” she whispered, stroking the side of his face.
“Now, come on then stitch me up or whatever you are going to do!” he demanded playfully pushing her back.
“Why you…” she started, then seeing him laugh, she flicked the herbs at him.
“Turn over and hold still then,” she ordered. Rolling back over onto his front, she laid her hands over his wounds and began her healing chant. Kainan closed his eyes. They had been really lucky; this time he had come so close to death.
He opened his eyes when she had finished and felt the wounds with his hand.
“Thank you honey,” he said smiling at her. She returned his smile before turning away from him to put her herbs back into her bag. As she did he noticed the gash on her arm and his hand flew up to her.
“Arweyn you’re injured, why didn’t say?” How could he have not seen that she was hurt, there she was tending to him and she was injured herself?
She felt her arm. In all the chaos she had forgotten about the knife wound to her arm.
“Oh, it’s fine,” she mumbled matter of fact, feeling the gash, it was quite deep. Now she was aware of it she suddenly felt the pain and winced.
“Let me stitch it for you,” he offered. She raised her eyebrow at him.
“It’s okay, I can do it. I’m from a hunting family remember? I’ve stitched up my brothers many a time.” She swallowed and then nodding, she ripped off what was left of her sleeve. Delving into her bag she gave Kainan some ointment, needle and thread. Taking it from her he grinned at her worried face.
“I will be as gentle as I can,” he assured her. She turned sideways offering him her arm. Steadily he began to stitch; it was quite a deep wound, right down to the bone.
“What happened to us out there Arweyn, your magic is really getting powerful; and what I did? You know I don’t even know how I did all that.” He said, trying to distract her from his stitching. She winced as he stitched.
“I know it’s so incredible. I really don’t know how I am able to do it either!” She paused as she looked at him. “Anyway what about you and that sword, I have never seen such magic before. It was like your sword could not harm you.” She looked into his eyes and took a deep breath. “I was really scared Kainan, I thought you were going to die.” She felt a lump in her throat just thinking about it, nothing frightened her more than the thought of never seeing him again. He stopped stitching for a moment and leaned forward, kissing her brow.
“I know I was scared too.” Then he remembered what the Queen had said to him, back in the crystal castle. “That is what she meant.”
“Who?”
“The Queen, your grandmother, when she said I should never fear my own sword.” Kainan finished his stitching. “There, perfect,” he complemented on his own handy-work. Patting her arm she looked at her wound and smiled.
“Thank you. My Grandmother said something to me today which might go some way to explaining what you and I just did.” She took the needle and thread off him and placed them back in her bag. “She said that we would be really powerful if we worked together.” Lowering her voice she continued.
“Since we joined.” Kainan raised his eyebrows at her, grinning.
“Kainan, I am being serious,” she insisted, placing her hands on the folds of her dress.
“Sorry, go on.” Kainan apologised giving her a wink.
“When we joined, somehow it combined our powers. Grandmother said we would have some of the abilities of each other, you know you would be able do some magic, and I would be able to fight and have greater strength.”
“Do you think she is right?”
“Well she did test me Kainan, back at the Faerling City. I managed to fight a suit of armour with a very heavy sword, one which I would never normally be able to even lift.”
“You fought a suit of armour!” Kainan chuckled at the thought.
“Yes I know it is funny, but really I did and it was not at all heavy. I do not even know how I did it; I jumped about and did somersaults and everything.” Kainan sat and stared at her. Then he took a deep breath, what had they become? Less than a week ago he was just ordinary, nothing more, and now all this, why?
“Kainan you do believe me?” She tilted her head at him.
“Of course I do, I just don’t understand how this is all possible?”
“My grandmother said that by working together we could enhance our two abilities and become really powerful.” Taking hold of his right hand she turned it over. “Kainan look closely at the palm of your hand and tell me what do you see?”
“This is where we joined,” he smiled, and his eyes sparkled at the memory. Smiling back she continued.
“Yes I know, but look,” she insisted. “Really look.” Lifting his hand closer, his mouth suddenly dropped open in amazement.
“You can see it!” she cried excitedly, shifting forwards onto her knees. He nodded. “I can see it, but I don’t know if I can believe it! It’s a unicorn entwined with a dragon and they are both moving, glowing even.” His eyes flew up to hers. “What is it, what does it mean?”
“It’s the Deragan sword Kainan; it has joined us together completely.” She breathed deep. “By using the Deragan sword, we have joined our lives, our souls and our powers together.” Kainan smiled at her and took hold of her hands; leaning forward he kissed her.
“It’s what you wanted, you don’t regret it do you?” She shook her head and smiled gently at his worried face.
“No never. Kainan the unicorn and the dragon are us, our magic, our souls. It glows with our life, our love, we are bound forever.” She sat back on her heels. “Wherever we are in this world, or even in another, we will always be able to find each other.” He thought for a moment as he looked at her.
“So basically what you are saying is that we are both freaks,” he held a straight face. She sucked her bottom lip and nodded at him.
“Well I don’t know that I would have put it quite like that, but I guess yes we are.”
“Great, I always wanted to be a freak!” he said, raising both his eyebrows simultaneously at her.
“Kainan!” she implored.
“I’m just teasing. Does that mean I can do magic like you now as well, because after watching you today you can sure as hell fight like me.”
She grinned, nodding. Shaking his head at her he laughed.
“Oh Arweyn what have we become.” She shrugged her shoulders at him.
“I don’t know Kainan, but at least whatever it is we are doing it together.”
“Do you know what I find really strange?” he said, stoking the side of her radiant face.
“What?”
“The incredible feeling that I already know you from somewhere or from some other time but I cannot quite remember where or when.”
“Really you feel that too? So do I. What do you think it means; do you believe in past lives?” Kainan shrugged.
“I’m not sure, but the way things have turned out this week I am inclined to believe in just about anything.” She sighed and leaned against him.
“Either way, if we did or we didn’t we still found each other,” she whispered happily. He buried his face into her hair.
“We sure did and no-one is going to separate us, ever.”
“Kainan.”
“Yes honey.”
“Grandmother said that the longer we are together, the more powerful we will become. Do you not find that scary?”
He sat back and looked at her. “What do you mean?”
“She was going on about a prophecy, something that was in our destiny. Because we joined using the Deragan Sword we have unlocked an ancient prophecy. She said we would become so powerful that all evil would fear us.”
He raised his eyebrows. “She said that?” Arweyn nodded.
“Bloody hell what’s going to happen to us?”
“I don’t know and that’s what scares me.” She grabbed hold of him and held him tight.
“I hope I don’t turn into some freaky monster or something,” Kainan muttered, nuzzling his face into her hair. She sat up and looked at him.
“I don’t think so Kainan.”
“Well, my eyes already glow like a wild animal when I get really angry.”
“Yes I had noticed,” she smiled, coyly at him.
“What is that look for?”
“Oh, I don’t know, I find it quite attractive in a man.”
He grinned at her. “Really?” She nodded and grinned back. He shook his head at her.
“What are you like Arweyn Glanber?” She turned around to him and straddled across his knees, sitting on his lap.
“A woman in love with a crazy man whose eyes glow like a demon!” she said, laughing and playfully planting a kiss on his lips. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight.
“I do love you,” he whispered softly in her ear. “Despite that fact that you are obviously a complete fruit cake!”
She sat back and held her hands on her hips. “Well I guess that is why we are so well suited.” She could feel his energy glowing all around him, drawing her in. “You know I had the Book of Chants all along.” He shook his head at her.
“What do you mean you had it?”
“Grandmother told me. What I thought was my mother’s spell book was in fact the Book of Chants the Gorzars wanted.”
“So what do the Gorzars have?”
“A fake.”
Kainan laughed. “So all this was a waste of time. We could have gone straight to the mountain?”
“That is what I said, but she said had we not gone along this path then we may never have joined. My grandmother said everything happens for a reason, and I think she was right.” Kainan sat quietly as he contemplated the thought of not ever having joined with her; that was not something he could bear to think about. He would do that journey a thousand times if it meant he would still join with her.
“Then it was the right thing to have done.” Arweyn nodded.
“Yes Kainan it was.” He ran his fingers through her hair then kissed her.
“Where is the book now?” He looked down at her bag. “In there?” She shook her head and tapped her forehead.
“It is all in there. The Faerlings transferred the entire contents in to my mind.”
“What! No wonder you are a fruit cake!” He sat back and raised his eyebrows at her. Poking him playfully, she laughed. “Cheeky!”
“Ouch!” he chuckled, as she jabbed him in the side; and gently he ran his hands round her back pulling her closer, locking her in a hard embrace he kissed her deeply. They held their right hand tightly palm to palm, fingers entwined together. They could both feel their passion rising, their desires overwhelming them, their energies charged, locked in together. Arweyn felt her hand tingling, she broke away from his kiss.
“Kainan,” she whispered alarmingly.
“Yes honey,” he replied, leaning towards her to kiss her again but she turned away.
“No look, look at our hands.” Hearing the urgency in her voice he looked down at their right hands; there was a bright white light of energy glowing between them.
“What is that?” Kainan exclaimed as they raised their hand together keeping their fingers entwined.
“It is some kind of energy ball.”
“What the hell is an energy ball?”
“You know like I was using when we were fighting the Elves, only this is really powerful.” She looked over at a tree.
“Over there Kainan, I’ll count to three and then we are going to let go and aim for that tree, okay?” He nodded sheepishly.
“Ready, one, two….”
“Wait, do we go on three or three and then go?” he grinned at her.
“Kainan!” she growled, as their hands began to shake with the power. “We go on three!” He winked at her and nodded.
“One two three!” She screamed and they released the energy aiming for the tree, with a massive explosion the tree ripped in half. The men all jumped in fear scrambling for their swords. The Runners roared and spun towards the tree their lips drawn back over their huge teeth. Kainan jumped up waving his hands frantically at them.
“It’s okay! It’s okay. It was only us there is no need to panic!” he yelled at them. The men looked at each other, what did he mean it was only them?
Kainan turned round to Arweyn and reaching down he pulled her up to her feet.
“What the hell did we just do?” He cried at her shocked, she shook her head.
“It was our energy somehow it triggered a really powerful energy ball.”
“Did you see the way it split that tree in half.” Kainan stared at the tree, and then looked at his hand as he thought. Turning to Arweyn he suddenly smiled. “I hope it is not going to do that every time I want to make to love you.” She blushed. “Is that what you were thinking?” He nodded.
“Oh yes.”
She swallowed and took his hand, squeezing it.
“Me too.”
Looking into her hazel eyes he smiled and then ran his hand through his hair scratching his head as he thought. “Arweyn this magic stuff is going to take some learning.” He looked at the tree again shaking his head. “How can we do that? It’s crazy!”
“I know it is Kainan, but we can learn it together,” she insisted, touching his arm. Turning back to her he raised an eyebrow.
“Yes hopefully without killing anyone in the process, including us!”
Drew came marching towards them.
“My Lord what was that?” he yelled, pointing to the decimated tree. Kainan shrugged.
“I’m not entirely sure,” he looked at Arweyn and grinning at her he gave her a wink. “I think it was a bit of built up tension.”
The burly man leaned back and frowned. “A bit of built up tension!” He took a fleeting glance between the two of them and shook his head.
“I’d hate to see it when you two had a lot of tension.” The young prince pulled a face at the prospect neither did he. Bending down he picked up his sword turning it over in his hand.
“You know I have some kind of connection with this sword.”
“What do you mean some kind of connection?” The young Prince sighed as he thought, he looked at his friend.
“When I took the sword from my father’s armoury it illuminated. My father said the sword had chosen me as its keeper. Back then when we were fighting the Elves, Tolwein had my sword and tried to chop my head off.” Drew’s face went pale. Grinning Kainan continued. “Obviously he didn’t succeed, but for some reason I had this strange feeling come through me,” he said, shaking his head puzzled. “I don’t quite know how to explain, I called out to the sword asking for its help. I know you don’t have to tell me it sounds crazy but it’s what happened. I called upon the sword to help me and it did, by some kind of magic the sword stopped on my neck, I could feel the coldness of the steel but nothing more. It refused to strike me down.”
Arweyn reached for his hand, in that moment she had been terrified beyond belief. He smiled squeezing her hand reassuringly.
“Then after I killed Tolwein I threw the sword at the Elf holding Arweyn killing him instantly and he dropped to the floor, somehow I was able to call the sword back to me.” He lifted his sword gesturing outwards. “It flew straight back into my hand.” He looked between them both. “The power I felt was incredible.” Looking towards the tree, he frowned. “And now this,” he nodded at the remains of the tree.
/> “My Lord I believe you have absorbed the full transfer. You have taken on all of the magic and power from our ancestors. And it appears the legend of the Deragan Sword is indeed real. Both of you,” he looked at Arweyn. “Have for some reason only known to the good spirits been given incredible powers. It has to be the prophecy there can be no other explanation.” Kainan bit his bottom lip.
“It’s just all happening so quickly, It hasn’t even been a week yet. I don’t know if I can control it Drew.” He rubbed his thumb on the hilt. Drew shook his head as he placed a comforting arm around his shoulder leaning in closer he winked at Arweyn.
“I’m sure My Lord that between the two of you, you will work it out.” Kainan looked at Arweyn and she smiled back at him, putting her head against the side of his shoulder.
“I hope so, come on we had better get moving we still have to get the Crystal and stop the Gorzars.” Stepping forward Arweyn picked up her bag and threw it over her shoulder. Kainan turning again looked at the tree shaking his head. All his life he had wanted to be different and now he surely was. It was not quite how he had imagined but there was the old saying, be careful what you wish for it may just come true. He looked at Arweyn; their powers could help them though against the Gorzars, that was if they could figure out how to do it together and control it when they needed it. Kainan took in a deep breath before turning around to his men and calling them over.
“Lord Porlock please tell me how you knew we were here and why you came? And who these very brave and very big friends of yours are?” Kainan grinned warily at the Runners, they were powerful animals and incredibly intimidating.
“Of course my Lord but do you think you could put your trousers back on first?” he whispered, raising an eyebrow and glancing down at Kainan’s bare legs.
“Oh! Yes right of course,” he blushed, looking over at the Deodar.
“Pernash have you finished fixing my trousers?” In all the excitement he had totally forgotten that he had no trousers on and stood there in his underwear.
“Here you are my Lord,” replied Pernash, handing Kainan back his trousers.
“Thank you. Well now tell me,” he continued, as he pulled on his trousers and placed the Deragan Sword back in its sheath.
