“Castar illumanartre reflectar!” The sword immediately emanated a great force field around them all; reflecting the burning flame back towards the beast. The beast screeched as it was hit by its own flame and shot upwards towards the sky in panic; but instead of escaping to freedom, it hit the newly reinstated force field. It tried time and time again, each time failing to break the barrier.

Screeching in anger the beast turned back towards the terrified people below. Arweyn jumped to her feet and stood alongside Kainan, she held out her right hand to him, the Deragan mark glowed powerfully. Kainan grabbed her hand fast, joining his power with hers. Facing her, he nodded, he knew what she meant. Their hands began shaking as their powers combined. Then together they turned, and between the palms of their hands they had created a massive energy ball. Kainan looked at Arweyn and shouted.

“The tree?” Arweyn nodded and repeated.

“The tree!” and together they aimed fast and furiously at the oncoming beast; releasing the ball of energy they had conjured up so powerfully in their hands. They threw it at the creature just as it opened its massive jaws to send out another flame. The power exploded as it hit the creature directly in its mouth, blasting it into a thousand pieces.

The force threw Arweyn and Kainan backwards, and as they landed on the ground, they looked at each other.

“What the hell was that?” Kainan cried stunned. The King, forcing himself, sat up. He was still weary and weak. He looked across at him.

“It was a dragon.” Kainan stared back at him.

“A dragon?” he repeated. The King nodded as all eyes fell upon him. “It must have come through the Boundary.” Kainan looked at Arweyn, and then they both looked up towards the skies. The King cast a warning look towards Kainan and shook his head.

“Later,” he whispered. He knew full well that Kainan wanted to know more, but he didn’t wish to discuss it in front of his men. Kainan took heed of his father’s warning and said no more. Then he and Gareion each took an arm, lifting the King to his feet.

“Thank you my sons,” he beamed proudly looking at them both. “You found each other.” The brothers grinned, nodding.

“Come father, you need to rest.” Gareion said, insistently. The King nodded.

“In a moment Gareion, first I must address my men.” He stood up straight, shrugging off his sons help. “Kainan my sword.” Bending down Kainan picked up his father’s sword, handing it to him. His father nodded his thanks. Raising his sword high above his head he cheered to his men.

“WE are victorious! Tonight we celebrate our victory and the return of my sons, Kainan and Gareion, Princes of Malgar!” The soldiers around them erupted in cries of euphoria, cheering both the King and the Princes.

The King breathing in deep lowered his sword, nodding to Gareion. “Now my son, I need to rest.” Once again, each taking an arm, his sons helped support their father. The others following along behind, they made their way back towards the castle. Kainan explained to his father what had happened to Rufas and the King deeply saddened by the loss, agreed that Rufas would be honoured as a true hero of Malgar. The three great Runners had decided to return home, and so too had Freelander. The mighty Gardiner satisfied that his part had now been fully played, preferred to celebrate their victory back home with his family. Offering their thanks the King, Kainan and Gareion all shook the man’s hand and bid them farewell. Inviting them all back for the bonding ceremony between Kainan and Arweyn. Agreeing to return, they went on their way.

The weary party continued their way back into the castle, cheered along by the many crowds that had now gathered. The wounded were tended to and the dead gathered. The rest of the army had disbursed back to their homes or to their quarters. The party crossed the draw-bridge and entered through the great gates, and there in the courtyard awaiting them was the Queen and Lady Alys.

The King could sense Gareion’s desperation as he looked at his wife waiting eagerly for him. He turned to him. “Go to her my son.” Gareion smiled at his father and gave a slight bow of his head. Releasing the King’s arm he rushed over to his wife. Lady Alys flung her arms around her husband and sobbed with overwhelming joy and relief. Kainan smiled as he watched his brother reunited, and his heart fluttered with happiness. He turned to Arweyn who was holding onto his other arm tightly and smiled contently, she nodded her understanding to him.

The Queen stood shaking her head at them as they approached her. “Well you certainly know how to put fear into the heart of a wife and mother.” She took a deep breath, and then stepped forward and embraced her husband. “Thank the spirits John that you and the boys are safe.” The King gently kissed his wife’s brow.

“Thank Kainan and Arweyn my love that you still have a husband.” She pulled back from him and looked at him puzzled. He smiled. “I will explain later, for now I really need to get this armour off and have a bloody huge tankard of beer.” The Queen laughed and took over from Kainan, helping her husband inside the castle.

Lord Porlock and Drew walked past. Drew stopped and patted Kainan on his back. Kainan turned to him.

“Now you have redeemed yourself.” Drew said, as he lowered himself down onto one knee. “Your highness, First Prince of Malgar.” Kainan shook his head, slightly embarrassed

“Get up Drew.” Drew rose to his feet and grinned, reaching out Kainan shook his hand. “Thank you Drew, for everything,” he offered sincerely. Drew nodding, bowed once more, and then continued off after Lord Porlock.

Kainan watched as he walked away and shook his head. He was indeed a great protector and a good friend. Taking hold of Arweyn he pulled her in close, stroking her hair. “Well here we are.”

She nodded, “Yes here we are.”

“Do you still love me, or was it just a heat of the moment thing?” he questioned grinning at her. She shook her head at him.

“Stupid. Of course I do.” She closed her eyes as he kissed her, deeply and passionately. Opening her eyes, she felt her body shake.

  “I love you.” he whispered.

“Love you too,” she replied. Glancing over Kainan could see her mother and Sharlinger, waiting at the entrance to the castle. “I think I am going to have to let you go now.” he said smiling.

  “What do you mean?”

He nodded towards the door. “I think your mother would like you to go with her now.” Arweyn turned, and nodded as she saw her mother smile at her.

“I think so too, just for a while, to get bathed and changed.” Kainan ran his hands through her hair.

“It kills me though. Every moment we are apart.”

“I know, but at least we are safe now and can be with each other whenever we want.”

“All the time when we are bonded,” he said, smiling at her. Arweyn grinned happily. “I shall begin making arrangements first thing tomorrow, soon you shall be my husband.”

“And you my beautiful wife,” he kissed her again, longing for that night to come. Letting her hand go slowly, she walked over to her mother and her aunt. Lady Elanor smiled at Kainan and gently bowed her head to him. Kainan returned the gesture.

“Come brother!” Gareion cried happily, waving Kainan over to them. He smiled, walking over to them.

“Thank you Kainan.” Alys said, reaching forward and gently kissing him on his cheek. “For bringing him home, just as you said you would.”

“See brother, look at my son!” Gareion said, proudly rubbing Alys’s stomach.

  “Gareion!” Alys implored embarrassed.

Kainan laughed, and then whispered, “Not so sure about a son Gareion,” then he winked. Gareion stopped, and looked at Kainan with an eyebrow raised.

  “A daughter?”

“Well, it’s a fifty, fifty chance Gareion.” Kainan said, not wishing to say anymore. Gareion grinned.

“A daughter as beautiful as my dear wife would be just as welcomed in this world as a son,” he cheered, throwing his arms around his brother’s shoulder and marching him into the castle. />
There were great celebrations that evening. The villagers returning to their homes celebrated with dancing, feasting and fireworks.

The soldiers too were revelling in their victory. The cooks had been working overtime to provide enough food for the feasting. Barrels of beer were rolled into their quarters, where the celebrations went on all night long.

The Unicorns had been given warm stabling and food for the night and the Faerlings had joined in with the celebrations that were being held in the great room.

Kainan stood outside the banqueting room listening to the laughter coming from within. He was waiting for Arweyn. He wanted to go in with her and hopefully sit with her. Her mother and the Queen of the Faerlings and her entourage of Faerlings had already gone in, so had his mother, father, Gareion and Alys. He drummed his fingers along the wall. He was starving and he could hear his stomach complaining quite loudly at the lack of food it was getting. He was already thinking about that dragon, and where it had come from beyond the boundary. His nose twitched with curiosity, what was beyond the boundary? He and his father had a lot to talk about.

Then his back suddenly shivered pleasantly and he smiled to himself as he turned around. There she was. He felt his knees go weak as he watched her approach, she was beautiful. His mind ticked over and he grinned to himself. Raising his hands to his hips he stared sternly at her.

“What are you trying to do kill me?” he said sharply, staring at her as she stood in front of him. A little startled by his tone she answered, hesitantly.

  “What do you mean Kainan?”

“You know exactly what I mean,” he replied. A grin then suddenly crossed his lips and she sighed as she recognised that impish look, he was teasing her.

“Look at you; you are so beautiful I think my heart is going to stop.” She fluttered her eyes at him and ran her hands slowly down his chest.

“Please kiss me or I’m going to die,” he whispered, faking a deathly pose.

“You are quite insane do you know that?” she said, with a giggle.

“Insane and madly in love, I cannot help it I’m afraid. Now are you going to kiss me or am I going to have to die first?” She shook her head at him and poked his chest with her index finger.

“Don’t you think you have done enough dying these past couple of weeks?” He shrugged absently. She smiled and shook her head.

“I had better kiss you then.” He raised his eyebrows and nodded, taking her into his arms.

  “Yes you had better….”
