Armand nodded again. He picked up the phone and murmured into it, too low for even Victoria’s keen vampire hearing to catch what he was saying.
He replaced the receiver and folded his hands on his desk.
“Victoria, I would like your help in capturing the countess. Having spent a century with her, you will have valuable information that will help us to ensnare her. I am giving you a transfer to our branch of the institute. If you see Cleo, my admin, on the way out, she will give you the necessary paperwork as well as a key to an apartment you can use while you are here. I hope it will be to your liking.”
Victoria stared. “Thank you Armand, that is most gracious.”
He nodded and she sensed that it was her cue to leave.
She stood from the chair and strode to the door.
“Victoria.”
She turned and faced him once again.
“I am glad you are here. I was devastated to learn of your supposed demise at the hand of the countess.”
With that comment, Armand picked up the phone, and Victoria opened the door and walked out.
He sat for a moment, phone in hand, and stared at the door. That same strange pull he had felt toward her centuries before was still present.
He quickly dialed a number and waited. When a gruff voice answered, Armand spoke smoothly.
“Victor, you must come to the institute. We have much to discuss. I think we finally have a way to capture the countess.”
“I will be there within the hour,” Victor replied, and then the line went dead.
Armand replaced the phone and smiled. It looked like there was a mission in his future, and he was glad. It had been some time since he’d had an adventure.
