To Save His Child

“I thought you were afraid I’m too much like your father.” She saw a flicker in his eyes. “You don’t want to be controlled ever again, remember?”

“Do you think I don’t know you, after we walked through the jungle together? I love you,” she repeated. “Even when you would have been justified in doing it, you didn’t bully me. You never would.”

His hands tightened on her shoulders, but he didn’t pull her closer. “And what about Ana?” he asked. “Aren’t you even a little concerned after what I told you?”

“I trust you with her life, Caine,” she said, looking into his eyes. “You would never hurt her. You’re not capable of it.”

“Neither one of us knows that, Lexie.”

She smiled mistily at him. “Oh, yes, I do. If you couldn’t hurt that man who was trying to kill you, how could you hurt your daughter? I know you, Caine. I think I know you better than you know yourself.”

“Are you sure, Lexie?” he asked, his voice urgent. “Are you very sure you’re willing to take that chance?”

“I’m not taking any chances, Caine.” She reached out and touched his face again.

He pulled her into his arms and buried his face in her neck. “Oh, God, Lexie, I love you.” Slowly he lifted his head. “And I love Ana, too. I’ll try to be a good father to her, I swear it. But I don’t know anything about being a parent.”

“Then we’ll learn together.” She linked her hands behind his neck and pulled his mouth down to hers. The other men in the room faded away, the noises around them faded away, until nothing existed but the two of them. His kiss was a pledge and a promise and a solemn oath.

He lifted his head to look down at her, and all the shadows were gone from his eyes. “You’re all I’ve ever wanted and more than I ever dared dream of. When will you marry me?”

She smiled at him, her throat tightening, feeling as if her heart would burst. “Isn’t that awfully presumptuous? Shouldn’t you ask me if I’ll marry you, first?”

“I don’t think our daughter would approve of us living in sin.” He brushed his lips over hers. “What do you think?”

Lexie listened for a moment, then smiled at him again. “Why don’t you go ask her?”

He raised his head, and his face softened when he heard Ana’s sharp cry. “I think I’ll do that.”

A minute later he walked back into the kitchen, holding the baby cradled in one arm. He draped his other arm over Lexie’s shoulder. “Ana says that she wants us to get married tomorrow.”

She looked at him, standing in front of her holding their child in his arms, and felt her throat tightening and her eyes swimming. All she had ever wanted was being offered to her, and all she had to do was reach out and take it. “I think we have a very wise child,” she whispered.

Caine reached out with his other hand and drew her close to him until the three of them were standing in an unbroken circle. “I love you, Lexie.”

She reached out and embraced both of them, holding them against her heart. “And I love you, Caine.”
