He kissed her. “You want to fight or make love?” His amusement ramped up her anger.

“I want to know what the hell you think you’re doing just getting into my bed!” She wrenched yourself out of his arms and sat up, prepared to get things settled tonight.

“Hmmm.” Harrison did a sit up. He tucked his pillows behind his back and leaned against the headboard. He was chuckling. “First time you’ve had an adrenaline jag?” he asked conversationally.

“What are you talking about? I just expect to be asked and not taken for granted.” She folded her arms across her chest and glared at him as hard as she could in the almost complete darkness.

He patted her leg. “Am I supposed to be asking you if you want to make love? Or if you want to marry me?”

“Don’t you laugh at me.” She punched him in the upper arm.

“Ouch,” he whispered. He picked up her fist and opened it and brought it to his lips. “I want to marry you, Tasha. And I want to make love to you. Will you be my wife?” He kissed her hand again.

“You’re only saying that because I made you.”

“And you’re only picking a fight because you’re jittery.”

“We’re not all of us used to people trying to kill us.” Her angry squawk was loud. The words seemed to echo.

“I don’t know that we ever get used to it,” he said thoughtfully. He didn’t let go of her hand. Not that she believed for one moment that her punch had hurt him in the least. Her knuckles ached where they had slammed into his hard flesh.

“But I certainly have more practice than you at keeping my heart rate slow and my brain functioning even in an emergency. But I’ll tell you a secret, sweetheart – I’m pretty much at the end of my rope tonight. So either I’ve got to go run or fly, or we have to go at it like bunnies. What’s it going to be?”

  “That’s some romantic offer, D’Angelo.”

“Nothing to say an Air Force officer can’t be romantic.” He put his arms around her stiff shoulders and appeared to discover her nightgown for the first time. “Flannel? In July?” He sounded amused again.

  “I was cold.”

“Of course you were.” His lips were against her temple and then they were enveloping her earlobe with hot, urgent suckling. One big hand was looking for the hem of her nightgown. When he found it he shaped the flesh of her thighs on the outside and then on the inside. The backs of his hand brushed against her bush. He got a good grip of the flannel and tugged it over her head. And then she was as naked as he was.

“Don’t worry,” he said, “I’ll keep you warm.”

Suddenly she was beyond thinking or being angry. She was as busy exploring his hard angles and tracing the ridged muscles of his belly as he was fondling her. He was pretty much hairless except for a narrow line that ran from between his pecs down over his rippling six pack to his pubic triangle.

“You might want to put something on this,” she said. “Seeing as you don't want any more babies.”

Frankie stooped to pick up his uniform. Shook out the wrinkled midnight blue fabric. Hung up pants and coat. Unpinned his medals and found the box they were kept in. Returned to gaze at her erstwhile lover.

Cameron groaned. Turned over with a great sigh. His eyes opened. “Frankie?”

  “Yeah. It's me.”

“Are you real or a dream?”

  “What do you think?”

“I think you're a dream,” he said, voice slurred. His eyes closed again.

“Then that must be what I am. Here tonight. Gone tomorrow.”

A powerful hand grasped her wrist. Tugged. Caught by surprise, she fell. His arms went around her. “If you're a dream, Frankie darlin', I can do what I want to do.” He pulled her mouth down to his.

She could have broken free. Of course she could have. Cam was still stronger than most men, but no longer stronger than she. And he would have stopped if she had properly woken him up. But she was tired of pretending. Tired of being horny. Tired of missing her other half.

She let her phoenix fly free. Their kiss was hot and hungry. They feasted on each other without finesse or consideration. Her body tingled where they touched, as if he was waking up long dormant nerves. The sensation was overpowering and she returned his fierce caresses with nips and bites of her own.

He was long and hard against her jeans. She deliberately rolled her thighs over him and caught his delicious moans with her mouth. Whatever might have gone wrong between them, making love had always been perfect. Having sex. Except that it had never felt like just sex to her.

He wrenched his mouth away from her suction. His chest was heaving as if he had run a long way and his lungs were oxygen starved. Poor bear. Weak from his wounds, being mauled by a voracious, savage bird of prey. If he needed his mouth to breathe, she could always find other tasks for hers to perform.

She flung his sweaty T-shirt to the floor. His curls were dirty-blond in the dim light, as though he had lost his golden perfection with his strength. She ran her fingers through them and brought the tips to her lips. He watched her as she slowly sucked his scent from each one. Beneath her buttocks, he leapt and twitched. He groaned.

“Put me out of my misery, Frankie,” Cam begged.

“Not yet. I'm not done with you.”
