She picked up the box and examined one of the edge pieces before fitting it into another. This one had barely been started, but she knew it would be a fun one. The picture was a massive pile of crayons, bright colors upon other bright colors. It made her smile.
“I think we’re almost done,” Thaddeus said, repeating the lines her father used to say, making her heart twist a little.
She nodded and kissed him on the lips. “I think so.”
He pulled her to his chest, and she snuggled into it. “Are you up for going out tonight?” he asked.
Since Thaddeus no longer could smell blood or hear a car crash from afar, they’d had to modify their healing excursions. They carried a police scanner with them, listening for anything they could help with.
“Sure.” Now that he didn’t take on the injuries, she quite enjoyed helping him heal people. Even though he didn’t get hurt, healing sapped his energy. She made sure he didn’t do too much and overextend himself.
Thaddeus pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her. “I love you, Belle,” he said, his voice husky.
She looked up at him, melting into him, content to spend eternity in his embrace. He was her world. He completed her. And he fit into every dream she’d ever had, like the perfect puzzle piece.
