The Sex Bucket List

Page 23

by Lane, Prescott

“You know how sorry I am.”

I raise my hand, her apology entirely unnecessary. “You still don’t get it.”

  “Get what?”

“That I’ll always give you what you need,” I say. “No matter the cost to me.”

And I paid a high price that week in the hotel. I struggled every minute with whether or not I should be doing more, fighting harder, while also reminding myself Emerson is a grown woman, not a child who needs a man to make decisions for her. The best thing for her was to make the decision on her own, so it didn’t matter that I didn’t sleep or eat. It was what she needed. And I will always give her what she needs, no matter how much it fucking hurts me.

“And you think I need to marry you?” she asks, a huge grin on her face.

“I know I need to marry you,” I say, getting down on my knee again, reaching into the nightstand for the little square box, but not opening it.

Her lips land on mine. We’ve been together long enough that I know her kisses—which one means “this is just a kiss” and which one means “we’ll be naked in two minutes.” This is her “yes, I’ll marry you” kiss. And it’s the best yet.

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I’ve got to thank my husband first, because he’s the one that I woke up at one in the morning in tears threatening to scrap the whole project. He’s wonderful, but it’s the tribe of women at my side to whom I owe this book.

Nikki Rushbrook, my editor, my advisor, my friend—without your help and constant support, my commas would be semicolons and my mind would be Jell-O.

Robin Bateman, beta reader extraordinaire—thank you for listening to my incessant bitching about blurbs. The back jacket would be blank without you.

Sommer Stein, my cover designer—it got done! You are a saint among saints for enduring my constant back and forth as I jumped from concept to concept.

Becca from Bibliophile Productions, thank you for bringing my story to life with your amazing trailer.

Nina Grinstead and the team at Social Butterfly PR—thank you for helping to bring my vision to life, believing in Emerson’s story, and guiding me through the crazy process of publishing.

To my daughter—thank you for telling everyone who will listen that your mommy writes books. And believing whole-heartedly in me.

To my son—thank you for not being like the character Jacob, and still talking to me. You have no idea how much that means to a mom.

To my amazing sister, who listens to me drone on and on about my characters while loving and supporting every word I write.

Bloggers—I wish I could list all the blogs that have ever done a shout out, post, or review for me. But the list would be too long. Thank you for loving books. But more than that, thank you for loving romance books, and the authors who write them.

Readers—thank you for sharing my characters’ tears, their laughs, their hopes, and their love. Thank you for taking them into your hearts and loving them as I do. Thank you for taking them into your lives where they will live forever. And thank you for allowing me—a simple Southern girl—to live her dream.

  Hugs and Happily Ever Afters,
