“Of course,” he replied easily. Kosmas was only too happy to give her some space, now that he had won. “I'll join you for the last meal this evening, in your rooms. You'll find a black dress in your closet. I want you to wear it. And tell Cara to leave your hair down. I want to admire it.”

Keely nodded, but she didn't reply. After a moment, Kosmas turned away. To her surprise, he didn't return back to the pool again, though. Instead he stepped into the palace, unconcerned with his nudity.

Within minutes, Cara was escorting her back to her room. The other woman didn't comment on the state of her dress, not that Keely really expected her to. The lines were clearly drawn in the palace walls, everyone knew their place. Even her.

At her door, she held up a hand to stop Cara. “I'd like to be alone for a little while,” she told the other woman, much to her obvious surprise. “I can undress myself. In fact, please don't return until I need to prepare for the evening meal.”

Cara looked surprised, but she didn't argue. Instead, she bowed at Keely before immediately turning to leave.

Once she turned the bend in the hallway, Keely opened the door to step in. And as she shut it, she burst into tears. The changes in her life were never ending, the stakes even higher than her freedom and livelihood. And she only had hours to make peace with it. A man's life would be forfeited, should she fail.
