Blaze burst out laughing. “Yo ass crazy, man. Just hold it. Come on, I have two more stops, then we can really get something to eat.” He nodded toward the door.

Throwing him his key, I grabbed his money. Tossed it in my purse then followed him out the room. I went ahead as he locked the door, going straight to Tishana, who stood talking to Laquanda. I walked over and tapped her.

  “What’s up?” She asked.

“You sure I’m the only person ever been back there?” I asked her and she nodded.

“Yep, six years I’ve been here and never seen him take anyone to his office. Sam and Blaze been friends for years, he ain’t never been back there,” she told me.

“Okay, that’s all I wanted.” I was about to walk away, but she stopped me by grabbing my arm.

“I know he’s rough, but don’t hurt him, I mean, if he brought you here he must really like you. So be patient with him, he’ll… We’ll he probably won’t get better, but he likes you. I’ve never seen him fight with a girl only to turn around and chase after her. So yeah, go in there and tell them I sent you,” she suddenly said.

What? How she go from talking about Blaze to… shid, I didn’t even know.

“Tishana, I’ma fire yo black ass,” Blaze’svoice boomed, making me jump.

Oh she was playing it off.

“Yeah right, you love me too much,” Tishana told Blaze before turning to me. “It was nice meeting you…”

“Peaches,” I finished for her and she looked at Blaze then back to me.

“You Peaches?” She asked, seeming in disbelief.

“Yeah, I just said that,” I said slowly, looking at Blaze and he shrugged.

“Oh, my God! Girl my momma and his had a two hour conversation about yo ass. Wait, you are the one that beat him up right?” She asked. How was I suppose too answer that. “Yep, it was you—”

“Tishana, shut yo ass up, damn! We got costumers,” Blaze said and I bit into my lip so I wouldn’t laugh. There were no costumers in the building at all. Grabbing my hand, Blaze began to drag me out the building. “The fuck you talking to her fah?” He snapped.

“Stop, pulling me. I was asking about her shoes, now stop…” My words trailed off as he opened my door and I just stared at him, unsure if he realized what he just did. It would take beating some dude’s ass for them to start opening my damn door.

  “What?” He questioned.

Shaking my head, I said nothing, just climbed in the truck. “Thanks.”

He walked around to his side then got in, starting the truck. Blaze opened the glove compartment then handed me my gun.

“My baby, she bet not have no bodies on her,” I told him and he slapped my thigh hard. “Bitch, stop! That shit hurt,” I snapped, punching him. “What the fuck wrong with you?”

  “Man, stop hitting me.”

“Look at my leg?” Hitting him again, I pointed to his hand print that was forming on my thigh. “I do not like you,” I said as Blaze’s phone started ringing.

Pulling the phone from his pocket, he looked at the screen then at me before he cussed. Of course I, being me and thinking it was a chick, quickly snatched it.

“Hello?” I answered, looking at Blaze.

“Who is this?” I didn’t expect an older woman to be on the line. I looked at the screen and my eyes went wide.

“Here,” whispering lowly, I tried to give him back the phone. “Blaze, it’s your mom.”

He looked at me like I was stupid. “Get on the damn phone with yo nosy ass.” I was about to hang up the phone. “Yo ass bet not.”

“Shut up,” I whispered to him. “Hello?” I repeated.

“Who the hell is this playing on the damn phone?” She snapped and I put her on speaker.

‘This Blaze’s friend, I’m sorry it must be a bad connection or something—’

“Yah lying, I heard you whispering, ‘it’s your mom’. Now who is his friend?’ I looked at Blaze and he started laughing, making me glare at him.

“Hey, ma. What’s up?” I let out a relieved breath once Blaze started talking.

“Hey, Boon. Who was that answering the phone?’ She asked him.

  Boon?

“Peaches scary ass. But what’s up?” He asked her again.

“Peaches, the girl that got yo feelings in a twist?”

“Aye! Yo, you on speaker, damn!” He yelled at her and I had to cover my mouth so I wouldn’t laugh.

“Sorry, Booney. You should’ve said something, and don’t be yelling at me. Hey Peaches.” Blaze groaned, looking at me.

“Hello,” I spoke as Blaze started mouthing for me to hang up on her.

“How you doing, sweetie?” She questioned as I shook my head no at Blaze.

  “I’m fine, and you?”

“Good. So you’re the one marking up my Booney?”

“No, ma’am,” I replied back with wide eyes.

He really told his mother on me.

“Bullshit! He came here all busted up in the face. See my Booney likes yo little ass—’

“Peaches, hang up on her, damn,” Blaze mumbled. I was not about to hang up on his momma.

“He don’t wanna hurt you, but I ain’t gon’ have you scratching up my baby’s face and shit—” She fussed at me.

  Oh, hell no!

  “Hello,” I pretended I didn’t hear her.

“I’m here-.’ I cut her off.

“Hello?” I stretched out the O.

“Yeah, Boon—’ She spoke much louder this time.

“I think she hung up. Hello.” I told Blaze, still pretending like I couldn’t hear her.

“No, Peaches—” His momma began saying, but I started talking again.

“She hung up,” I hung up the phone and broke out laughing. “Oh, my God. Boon, Booney? Seriously Blaze? I can’t believe I just hung up on your mom, though,” I said, laughing hard.

“Shit ain’t funny,” he stated, laughing with me.

  “Booney?” I asked, laughing.

“Don’t ask why, she just calls me that,” he said, pulling into a nice neighborhood.

“She does know you’re thirty, right?” He glanced at me, licking his lips as he shook his head.

“I don’t know what her crazy ass thinks.” He shrugged while pulling in front of a nice two story brick house. It was a really nice looking family home.

“Please tell me this isn’t your mom’s place if so I’ll stay in the car.” I just hung up on the woman, I am not about to go into her house.

“Man, get out.” Smiling, I turned in my seat to face him. “What?”

“You not gon’ open my door?” I asked, pressing my lips together before running my tongue over them. His eyes following the movement had me leaning into him. “Wanna a kiss?” My lips were already brushing against his as I finished my sentence.

Blaze’s hand tangled into my hair as he kissed me, his tongue thrusting into my mouth twisting with mine. He took hold of my waist, then placed me in his lap. All too soon we were interrupted.

The ringing of his phone had me pulling back as I panted. I bit hard into my bottom lip as I gazed at him through my lashes.

  “Reach in the condom—”

  “Condom?” I laughed.

“Shut yo ass up, you know what I meant. Reach in the glove compartment and get the gloves outda there.” Laughing, I did what he asked, getting and handing him the latex gloves. “Here, put these on.” I slipped on the gloves, Blaze did the same before opening the door. “Come on.” Getting out the truck he grabbed my hand, leading me up the walk way.

I was a little worried as to why he had me putting on gloves, but I didn’t say anything. I just followed him. We walked up the five little steps leading to the front door and Blaze stopped, pulling out his keys.

  “You live here?” I asked.

  “Peaches, meet Jesse.”

  Chapter 28

  Peaches

Jesse was really a house? I groaned out loud. Now that I was actually seeing the
house I felt even more stupid. I snapped at and smacked him. I was embarrassed.

“You wanna beat her ass and tell her to stop fuckin’ me?” He asked, laughing.

“That’s not funny, yo black ass get on my nerves.”

“Come on, I ain’t gon’ be here long. Just a few minutes,” he said, unlocking the door and letting me in. We walked into the house, straight into the living room. It was nice, definitely didn’t look like how I imagined a drug spot to be. I would actually live there. Nice hardwood floors, brown, leather sectional to match. And a huge, flat screen TV mounted on the wall.

“I like this. Ooh, those lamps would go good in my living room. Remind me to take those when we leave,” I whispered as if I was talking to one of my girls. Looking at Blaze, I laughed. “I mean, can I have those? They would look so good in my living room.”

  “Your living room is purple.”

“And gold. Well, it will be once I have these lamps.” My living room was cream and lavender, but it didn’t matter, those lamps were cute as hell. The lamps were of two naked bodies intertwined, they were simply beautiful. “I could spray paint these cream or purple. Ooh, one of each!”

“Yo ass is not taking them lamps, so stop making plans. Now come on,” he insisted.

  I’m getting those lamps.

Pursing my lips together, Blaze pushed me toward the back, not paying my look any attention.

“Stop pushing me, Booney. Ouch! Bitch!” I snapped as he slapped me on my ass.

“Don’t ever call me that, only my moms can. Don’t make me beat yo ass.”

All I could do was smile at him. I didn’t say anything as he pushed open a door.

“Don’t say shit, just go,” he ordered.

He walked in front of me, but I paid him no mind. My eyes were too busy jumping from the three men at the three different tables. One looked like had separated the different pills and was now filling the capsules with a white powder. At the other table a man was putting pills in baggies, while the last man was weighing.

Why the hell would he bring me here? This man done lost his gotdamn mind.

“Come on,” I didn’t move at first. I know King’s in the same line of work and so was my dad, but they didn’t bring my mom and me into it. They kept it separate from us. Now to actually see them doing it was a sight, it made what they do real.

Grabbing my hand, Blaze began to pull me out the room and into another. That room was the same as other with the tables, but it was empty and instead of pills it was marijuana packed on the first table, the last two where empty, wiped cleaned it looked like.

“Why would you bring me here?” I whispered.

Blaze didn’t say anything as he removed four floor boards, then grabbed a duffle bag from under the table. He put ten bricks inside, then zipped up the bag before looking at me.

“What you wanted me to leave you in the truck?” He said while throwing the bag over his shoulder, turning back toward the door.

“Blaze, wait. I’m serious. I don’t do this, you of all people should know that being friends with King. The fighting, shooting, cutting I can get down with, but this…” I pointed to the bag but before I could even finish what I was saying, he cut me off.

  He’s rude as hell…

“Let’s go.” Placing my hand in his, he led me out the room and back into the other one. “Yo,” he called to the man packing. Picking up another duffle, he handed it to Blaze. With a nod we were headed toward the front door.

  “Blaze, wait.”

“Man, we’ll talk in the truck. Now come on,” he said, making me roll my eyes.

That was not why I was stopping, shid, I wanted them lamps.

I watched him open the front door before going over and unplugging the first lamp, thinking I was gon’ be slick with it. But the damn thing had the nerve to be heavy.

  Shit.

“What the fuck you doing?” Blaze asked, looking back at me.

“Tryna steal these damn lamps, but they heavy. Can you get them for me?” Shaking his head, Blaze walked out the front door. “Bitch,” I mumbled as I pushed my purse up my shoulder then picked up the heavy ass lamp.

“On what, yo ass really taking my shit?” Blaze said, taking the lamp from me.

“It ain’t like you need them, you can have the ones at my apartment.” I bargained and he laughed.

“Man, come on. And don’t nobody want them ugly ass lamps.” They weren’t ugly, just plain oval shaped.

Giving him the finger, I walked out the house to the truck and got in. Blaze put the lamp in the truck then ran back inside to get the other one. He returned a short while later. I watched him lock the front door then jog back to the truck.

“Thanks for the lamps, my apartment will really enjoy them.” I turned in my seat to face him while he backed out the driveway. “Look, I get this what you do, but I don’t want to see it. Same thing with King, I know what he does, I just don’t want to get involved in this life. Like I said, shooting, stabbing, fighting, I’m a go—if it ever comes to that—but this, I can’t.”

It was true, I didn’t want to be a part of it. I liked Blaze and all, hell, I loved King to death, but even that wasn’t enough to get me involved, to even want to be around it.

“Don’t worry about this, it’ll be the first and maybe last time you’ll ever come here. I’m just showing you what you’re getting yourself into fuckin’ with me. Every day this is what I’m doing. I’m either here, Anastasia’s, the lot, any one of the pool hall’s, or making sells like you saw earlier. Now if you gon’ fuck with me, this the shit you gon’ have to deal with.”

“So you do trust me?” Stopping at a light, Blaze looked at me.

  “No.”

“So why go through the trouble of showing me this, not knowing for sure whether or not I’m all the way in?” I asked.

“Why the hell you always got to make sense of some shit? Damn. Whether I do or I don’t, I’m trusting yo ass with this and giving you a chance to decide on what you really wanna do.”

  Now he thinks of this!

“Why couldn’t you have showed me this before I decided to have sex with you?” I asked seriously.

Blaze laughed, looking at me. “Yo ass, man, damn. So you in, Peaches? On everything, don’t fuck me over. I’ight?”

Why him? That was all I could think as I answered. “I won’t as long as you don’t do the same to me. I’m in.”

“I’ight. I got to drop this off then we can get something to eat.”

“I want Red Lobster!” I told ’em, all ready tasting the snow crab legs dipped in butter.

  ***

“I’ight, Tameka, we out. Man, watch yo eyes, damn,” Blaze said to the red head I was two seconds away from jumping on.

“Bitch, better. Fuck she mugging for?” I ain’t had no problems with no chicks about Blaze ass, but as soon as I walked into his auto body shop this bitch started glaring hard.

“Peaches, shut up. Ain’t nobody tryna deal with that shit.” Blaze pulled me to him.

“Whatever. Are you almost done here?” I asked, rolling my eyes.

“I guess you were, I can do better. But damn, Blaze, I didn’t know you like hoes, ratchet ass hoes at that,” she insulted, staring at me distastefully.

No this bitch didn’t just call me a hoe.

“Bitch, I’ll show yo ass a hoe, come from behind that desk. Fuck you gon’ talk shit behind glass? Bitch come out,” I snapped as I pushed away from Blaze. “Come on bitch—”

“Peaches, go get yo ass in the truck. Tameka, shut the fuck up and watch who you talking to. Bitch, yo ass can easily be replaced, fuck wrong with you?” Blaze snapped at her.

“Whatever, Blaze. Get her ass outda here, then,” she told him.

“Bitch, you come put me out. Come on, sweetheart.”

“Peaches, I said shut the fuck up and get in the damn truck.” That Tameka bitch was mugging mad hard.

“Fuck with me, come put me out bitch!” I snapped as B
laze pushed me toward the exit. ”Stop pushing me—”

“Calm down, damn. Yo ass always tryna fight,” Blaze said as he pushed me to the truck.

No he didn’t just say that.

“Me?” I pointed to myself. “Yo ass should be the last one to call me out on my shit. Plus, I didn’t start nothing, that’s yo ass and these bitches.” Getting in the truck I slammed the door.

“Don’t be slamming my fuckin’ door,” Blaze snapped as he got in, slamming the door.

“Don’t be slamming my fuckin’ door!” I muffed his head to the side.

“Make me slap yo ass.” He pulled off.

I rolled my eyes and sat back in my seat. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t scared of Blaze, I’d get down with his ass in a minute. But the mothafuckin’ slap hurts something nasty. Hell, I still felt those hits from earlier.

“Whatever you got going on with that chick, you might as well go back in there and tell her it’s done. Blaze, I’m not to be played.”

“Ain’t shit going on with me and that bitch. I hit her ass a couple times, that’s it. She know ain’t shit happening.” My lips twisted as I stared at him. “On G, I ain’t fuckin’ with her on no serious type shit.” He came to a stop light. “Gimme kiss.” He leaned over the seat toward me. I didn’t move, just stared at him blankly. “I’m not fuckin’ that damn girl no mo. Now give me a kiss.” A horn blew behind us.

I glanced at the light to see it had turned green. “The light’s green, go.” He threw the car in park. “Blaze, go. The light turned.”

“So you ain’t gon’ kiss me? Shid, if you want me to drive you will.”

I stared at him for a long minute. My eyes soon rolled up as my façade started to break. Glancing back at him, I started laughing. “You get on my nerves.” Leaning over the seat, I kissed him. ”Now go.” Blaze pulled off just as the light turned red. “You wrong, those people ‘bout pissed off.”

“That’s yo fault.” Glancing at me, he turned the radio off.
