  A Note from the Author

The trucking industry is a complex system of men and women living a lifestyle like no other. Truckers routinely live in their trucks for weeks at a time away from friends and family. They criss-cross the country to move the freight that drives the economy, supplying us all with the things we need. Few people know, or have ever thought about, what it takes to get their stuff to the store so they can buy it.

I’ve been privileged to work in the industry for nearly ten years. It has been the most interesting, frustrating, job that I love to hate. The job provided me with a front-seat view (even though it was usually smeared with bugs and road slime) of a great and beautiful country. For that I’ll always be grateful.

This is a book of fiction. None of these events actually happened, however, most of them could have. Living on the road is a dangerous, rough world. Truck drivers encounter all kinds of weather, road construction, and bad drivers. Some of them are bad drivers themselves. Cargo theft and lot lizards are a fact of life.

The Trust Jesus graffiti I referenced several times in the book do exist. They can be found from coast to coast on bridge posts of most major freeways. I don’t know who placed them, but it was a gargantuan effort.

An internet search revealed I’m not the only person who has seen and has been affected by the graffiti. According to one source, the marks have been there as early as 1980. Unfortunately, the marks are lost as many bridges are being replaced. In some areas the graffiti are painted over, but often the blue paint still shows through.

I want to thank my trucking company for the opportunity to do this job. I consider the time spent in the truck as research.

I’d also like to thank my support system, my family and friends. Without you I wouldn’t be sane enough to write a book. And a special thanks to Minnie and Chloe, who endured many miles with me and sat patiently while I wrote it all down.
