Shadow Puppets: Scarecrows of Minnow Ranch
Page 11
“Get off me!” she squealed.
“Daisy!” she heard Matt yell from far away.
“Matt!” she screamed.
She kicked loose from the scarecrow and rose to her feet. She ran toward the corn. Behind her, she heard the sound of a scarecrow’s screech. It was right behind her and closing in fast. Suddenly, Matt ran past her and right at the demon. She turned in time to see him slam chest to chest into the creature and scoop it up in a football-style open field tackle. He slammed the scarecrow against the truck door. It clawed at him, but Matt, even with his injury, was a tough son of a bitch. He smashed an elbow through the scarecrow’s nose, shattering its face.
“That’s my fucking woman!” he yelled as he kicked up hard between its legs.
The scarecrow howled and doubled over like any male creature would. Matt grabbed the back of its head and smashed a knee into its face. He threw the demon to the ground and spit on it.
“Matt!” Daisy screamed.
Behind him, two more scarecrows were coming. Daisy lit a match, and tossed it at them. They both stopped in their tracks.
The gasoline hadn’t touched the spot where she’d thrown the match and the hay caught fire lazily. The scarecrows walked around it, slowly. They weren’t afraid of the minimal flames.
“Matt,” Daisy said. “We have to run. Where’s my sister?”
“She’s in the car,” he said.
She lit another match and begged God for help before she tossed it. This time it landed in a gas-soaked spot of corn and flames shot up from the ground, racing around the corn like falling dominos. The fire circled around them and for a second, fear hit Daisy. What if they were trapped out there, completely blocked by walls of flames? She had no idea where she’d driven out there. The gas could be anywhere.
“Come on!” Matt yelled, taking her hand and dragging her through the corn toward the house.
She didn’t look back. She didn’t have time to. She simply ran. Cries of anger filled the air…or was it fear? Daisy followed Matt. When they finally escaped the corn, they flung themselves to the ground and turned to see the field in flames. The shrieks of the scarecrows echoed through the night.
Daisy wondered how far the field went on. How far would they be able to run before their entire world was devoured by the flames? Had she killed them or temporarily stunned them? Now wasn’t the time to figure it out. They needed to get the hell away from there.
When they reached the car, they both hopped in, Matt cranked the engine, and they took off down the road. Dawn was asleep in the backseat. The gentle sound of her snoring brought some normalcy to the situation.
Daisy saw the locket around her sister’s neck.
“Give me that fucking thing,” she said as she reached back and yanked it free.
She rolled down the window and threw it out.
“This place isn’t a part of us anymore,” she said. “And neither is that fucking necklace. Let it burn in hell. Just like mom, just like dad, and just like that fucking corn.”

Dawn felt the rumble of the car as it bounced over the rough dirt road. Her stomach hurt and her head felt strange. She’d been drugged or something. Where was Anders?
“Where am I?” she asked.
Her sister, Daisy, so beautiful but so frazzled, looked back at her from the front passenger seat and flashed her a smile.
“Where are we?” she asked.
“In the car,” her sister replied. “We’re getting you out of here.”
“Where’s Anders?” she asked.
“He’s gone, forever.”
No. What did she mean? She loved Anders and he loved her. They were going to be together.
“Take me home,” Dawn begged. “Take me back to Anders.”
“Home is gone,” Daisy said. “We burned it to the ground. The barn, the house, even the corn. It’s all gone.”
Dawn rubbed at her belly and felt movement inside. She stared at the backseat. She felt lost. She felt…dead inside. Yet, there was life…and the baby would be here soon.
