“I’m glad I got to spend it with you,” Alex said.
Hank stopped walking and turned to face him. “About that.”
Alex frowned. Hank sounded so serious. He wasn’t… Surely, he wasn’t breaking up with Alex, was he? Slowly, Hank went down, balancing himself on one knee, and everything made sense.
“Alex Haynes, every single day I spend with you is the best day of my life. I told you once that it was you in high school, and it’s you now. But really, it’s always going to be you.” Hank’s voice shook. “You are the most amazing person I’ve ever met. You challenge me in ways no one else ever has, and you love me through everything in spite of my flaws. I love you so much.”
Hank had gone blurry as tears filled Alex’s eyes. His heart thrummed in his chest like a caged hummingbird. “I love you too,” he whispered.
“When we were still reconnecting, I kept telling myself that you deserved better than someone like me. You deserved someone who could take you on vacation somewhere tropical and kiss you in the ocean. Someone who would make love to you on a big bed with white sheets. Well… we’re here where it’s tropical, and I kissed you next to the ocean. And the bed in the suite has white sheets.”
Alex laughed, sending tears cascading down his cheeks.
“My point is, I always thought you deserved better than me. And part of me still thinks you do, but I’m too selfish to let you find that person. I want you all for myself. For the rest of my life, if you’ll have me.”
Hank reached into his pocket and pulled out a black velvet box. He cracked it open, revealing a brushed silver band with diamonds around the edges. “Alex Michael Haynes, will you do me the honor of becoming my husband?”
Dropping to his knees, Alex threw his arms around Hank, careful not to knock the box into the sand. “Yes.” The word came out on a sob. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
Taking Alex’s left hand, Hank slid the ring on his finger. The sunlight caught on one of the rows of diamonds. It was beautiful.
“Oh my God, I get to plan my own wedding,” he said with a grin.
Everything he thought was lost, he’d found again. Only this time, it was better. This time, he was going to have his fairytale ending. ‘And the football jock and the town queer lived happily ever after.’
