The next day, Cameron was sitting at home watching one of her favorite shows. Kingston had just fallen asleep, when her phone started ringing. The ringtone was one she would never forget. She hadn’t heard it in weeks now because the last few times she talked to him she was the one who made the phone call. She really wasn’t expecting him to call and she was nervous because he could be calling to cuss her out for sending those pictures on his wedding day, so she didn’t answer. Keith called right back but out of fear, she still didn’t answer., He texted her and said answer the phone please and everything was all good. When he called back three minutes later she finally picked up, but didn’t say anything right away. It could have been Phebe for all she knew. “You know that was some fucked up shit you did, but I knew you wasn’t gonna let her slide for sending those pictures to your house, so I’m not gonna say too much about it. Just don’t do anymore stupid shit,” Keith said.

“I didn’t do anything,” Cameron lied, but Keith wasn’t tryna hear the bull shit so he shut her down immediately. “What you calling for anyway? Aren’t you supposed to be on a honeymoon somewhere?” Cameron asked.

“You shut all that shit down with those pictures. This has been a week from hell. I ain’t even had none since last Friday night, well Saturday morning,” Keith said.

“So you couldn’t even wait til I was gone ten minutes before you called that skank bitch?” Cameron heard someone say in the background right before the phone hung up. She knew it was Phebe and smirked to herself. Just when she was feeling like she was getting over him, he reappeared and all the feelings she had for him came rushing back. “Damn, love is a hell of a drug just like Toya said, Cameron mumbled to herself.

It took about thirty minutes for Keith to call back. Cameron wanted to question him, but she let it go. She and Keith had started arguing and questioning each other so much lately and she was tired of it, so she was trying something different. She also didn’t know how long they would even be communicating since they break up and make up every week these days so she was like “fuck it” and told herself to just go with the flow. Him even contacting her was a big surprise because she was sure that he was never going to call her again since he was married now. As you can see, she was wrong. They talked for a while and then Malcolm beeped in. She ignored his calls and the house phone started ringing shortly after. Kingston was still sleeping so she didn’t bother answering because she didn’t want to talk to Malcolm. When Keith got a beep he told her he would call her back. This motherfucker, she said to herself because she knew it was Phebe’s phone call that he brushed her to the side for.

Cameron decided to wake Kingston up so she could get him ready for his cousin’s birthday party. When she called Malcolm back he was reminding her about his nephew’s birthday party and begging her to take Kingston. Cameron really didn’t feel like being around his people, but she was sure Kingston would enjoy the party, so she agreed. If she would have said no, Malcolm was only going to keep calling and finally talk to Kingston and mention the party and she didn’t want to see him pouting. She needed to run to Wal-Mart to get a gift so she went ahead and made a move since she had less than two hours before the party was supposed to start.

When Cameron made it to Wal-Mart, she was browsing through the toys trying to find something for ten dollars, no more than twenty, because Malcolm’s people usually only gave Kingston a couple of dollars, if that. Kingston was playing with a few toys and asked for one himself. Then, out of the blue, he ran away from her screaming “HEY UNK!!” Kingston ran and jumped into Keith’s arms and was smiling from ear to ear. Keith was smiling just as hard, if not harder. “Hey lil buddy,” Keith said to him. Cameron wanted to run and jump in his arms too, but she fought the urge and was able to hold her composure. “Damn, this nigga be having me gone,” she said to herself while shaking her head. Keith walked up dressed in some stone-washed Balmain jeans, a white tee with his gold chain with the cross, and his wheat-colored Timbs. That Tom Ford fragrance hit her nostrils before he even got close to her. Keith spoke to her and she spoke back, without looking up at him. She would want to kiss him if she looked into his eyes and she knew that would be dangerous. “So what y’all bout to get into?” Keith asked.

“I’m bout to take him to a birthday party in a few,” Cameron replied while still picking through toys. Keith walked up and rubbed her on her ass. She finally looked up and made contact with his eyes. “I’m coming to see you later,” he told her. Cameron wanted to remind him of all the words he said to her, but she just kept her thoughts to herself. “Hit me up when you come from the party,” he said, as he told her and Kingston goodbye and started walking off. “I wanna go with you,” Kingston told Keith.

“Come on lil buddy. Your mom will come pick you up when she finishes and take you to the party. Come pick him up from my mom’s house,” Keith told Cameron and left with Kingston. Cameron opened her mouth to object, but no words came out, so she just stood there looking crazy.

She finally decided on a toy to purchase and grabbed a few household items that should have been purchased last month and checked out. Going to this party was something that she really didn’t want to do, especially since it was at Malcom’s mom’s house, and the last time she saw her she was getting bad vibes. She called Keith while leaving Wal-Mart and told him to just meet her at the intersection before getting off the highway, but he insisted that she come on by. She tried to protest again, but he wouldn’t meet her so she dreadfully headed to his mother’s house.

Cameron’s phone rang as soon as she hung up with Keith and it was her mom calling. They talked for the five minutes it took to get to her destination and Cameron was only able to get off of the phone by agreeing to really make a surprise visit to Charlotte. Her mom told her that she only had two kids left and some time with her daughters would mean the world to her. Cameron couldn’t tell her mom no after hearing the sadness in her voice. Her mom told her not to worry about paying for anything and just to be ready to go soon. Cameron didn’t know that she was talking about within a week or two, but she would soon find out.

When Cameron made it to the Edward’s residence, she got out of her car and walked up to the door. When she looked back and hit the alarm on her car, she thought about how she had grown to love the bright color of the car. Her original thought of painting it black like her old car were gone. Keith opened the door before she was able to knock. Kingston was in the kitchen eating a slice of chocolate cake when she walked in. She spoke to Mrs. Edwards and she spoke back, but it was short and dry. Cameron knew it was time to go already; she shouldn’t have been there in the first place, but she had to get her baby. “This cake is good, granny,” Kingston said and Cameron did a double take then turned to Keith. “I’m glad you like it, baby;” she replied to him and walked into the living room where Cameron and Keith were. “I really just need to know what it is that you did to my son. I know some of your people from up there do that voodoo shit so did you voodoo my son because it seems that he just can’t leave you alone,” Mrs. Edwards said smartly to Cameron. She had switched from sweet grandmother mode to bitch mode in a matter of seconds, Cameron thought. She was too shocked to respond so Mrs. Edwards kept talking. “How long do y’all plan to do this? You’re both married now and NOT to each other so…..” “Stay out of their business woman,” Mr. Edwards said, cuting his wife off when he walked in. “They are grown and need to figure out their lives on their own. Stay out of it please,” he continued. Cameron looked at Keith and he was looking like he didn’t have a care in the world, but she was fuming on the inside. How dare this bitch have the nerve to even think I put voodoo on her son. And she just gonna talk about my people to my face, Cameron thought to herself. She was ready to go. “Come on Kingston. We are gonna be late for the party,” Cameron said. “I don’t wanna go mommy,” he told her. “You have to go baby, so hurry up. Your cousins are expecting you,” she told him. Mrs. Edwards said a few more words, but Cameron had tuned her out completely.

When they walked outside Cameron let Keith have it after Kingston got in the car. “So you just gonna sit your ass there and not even say anything while your mama did all that talking? You know good and damn well ain’t nobody put no voodoo on yo ass. And she just called my people crazy to my face. I knew she didn’t like me. I knew it. I told you to meet me so I wouldn’t have to come over here,” Cameron said.

“Don’t worry bout moms. She just doesn’t want me to get hurt,” Keith said.

“You? What about me?” Cameron said while rolling her eyes.

“It’s all good. You know how moms can be protective of their sons, like dads are about their daughters.” I’ll talk to her. It’s nothing to trip over, Keith said. When Cameron got in the car, Keith told her not to forget to hit him up after the party.

Keith made it to Cameron’s house about ten o’clock later on that night after Kingston had gone to bed. Cameron was just getting out of the shower when he walked in the door. She jumped because he scared the shit out of her. He had sent a text saying he was on his way, but she had forgotten all about him having an extra key to her house and figured she would have to let him in. “Damn boy, you gon mess around and come up missing scaring me like that,” she told him. Cameron had practiced shooting her gun quite a few times and no one knew she had it except her parents. She almost told Keith one day, but decided against it, not knowing what was bound to happen in her crazy life. Cameron felt nervous for some reason. She didn’t know if it was because she hadn’t had sex with him since he had been married or what, but she was extremely edgy and anxious. Keith took off his clothes and went to the closet and grabbed his small travel bag that stayed there. Cameron thought back to the time that Malcolm pulled the bag down, but she put up such a big fuss about him always being nosey and invading her privacy that he backed off. He had said it looked like a man’s travel bag, but she cussed him out and started crying. After all of the stunts that he had pulled she knew that she could easily make him back off by crying and getting mad, and she did it often to get her way. She moved the bag for the remainder of his days home on that trip, but she put it back in its place after he left.

Keith went and hopped in the shower and Cameron poured her a glass of wine, sipping it slowly. Malcolm called and she reluctantly answered so he wouldn’t keep calling. “Hello,” she answered while pretending to be asleep.

“You sleep already on a Saturday night,” he said with disbelief in his voice. Cameron’s cell phone hung up and the house phone started ringing. “That’s why I can’t stand this motherfucker,” she said while getting up to answer the house phone, knowing it was Malcolm. “I’M AT HOME YOU BLACK BASTARD!! IF I HAD SOMETHING TO HIDE I WOULDN’T HAVE ANSWERED THE PHONE AT ALL, DUMB ASS,” she screamed as soon as she picked up the phone. “My phone hung up and I was just calling right back,” Malcolm tried to lie.

“You a bald-face lie. You know got damn well you called my cell phone first and not the house phone. Kingston is sleep and I’m going back to bed. Fuck you and goodnight,” Cameron said and hung up on him. He texted her cell phone a few minutes later with a half-ass apology and another message came through with him saying he was about to get off the road and find a job at home. Cameron rolled her eyes and didn’t even reply.

When Keith walked out of the bathroom he got in the bed and started kissing on Cameron. Just as he began sucking and teasing her left nipple, his phone rang. Cameron knew it was Phebe by the ringtone. He stopped and answered the phone. “What the fuck?” Cameron said in disbelief.

“Just give me one second,” Keith mouthed as he got up and answered his phone while walking out of the room. “Ain’t this some bullshit,” Cameron said and turned her back to the door. Keith walked back in about ten minutes later but Cameron wasn’t in the mood anymore. She tried to ignore him, but when she felt his tongue on her clit it was pretty hard to ignore him any longer. He was eating her pussy like he was starving and she grabbed his head and pushed him deeper while slow grinding her hips. She came in his mouth and he didn’t stop feasting on her. After she climaxed again she didn’t realize what he had stopped to do until she heard a condom wrapper. Cameron felt offended because they had never ever used condoms before. This motherfucker done got brand new on me, she thought to herself. He was deep inside of her before she could even protest or question him. Cameron did not like not being able to feel Keith raw and she told him to take the condom off when he told her to flip over. “I can’t. I gotta be more careful,” he told her. Cameron was instantly pissed off. She had busted two nuts while he was giving her head and wouldn’t have been mad if she could get another one, but she was pissed off. She pushed him off of her. “After all these years we been together you ain’t never used a condom, but after you marry this bitch you wanna start using them. I been married. What about me? You changed that much in just a week,” Cameron said to him. Keith got up and put his clothes back on before he replied. “I was in so deep with you at times I didn’t know whether I was coming or going. I really tried to have more with you, but you didn’t want what I wanted so I had to do what I had to do. We don’t need to be as deep as we were before. I really don’t even know why I’m here because I don’t need to jeopardize my marriage for someone who really don’t even want me. Me and you gotta chill out for real. I know we have said it before but we got to. It’s gonna be hard so we can break it off slowly. We can just hit each other up every now and then, but not get too serious. You feel me?” He said to her. Cameron stood there with fire in her eyes. “Are you fucking serious? Do you hear yourself? So it was alright for me to jeopardize my marriage, but when you get married we gotta chill. And then you was bout to just fuck me and tell me this? Hell, you did fuck me and tell me this. Get the fuck out!!” Cameron screamed. She picked up a shoe and hit him upside the head. She charged at him, catching him off balance and knocking him down. Keith was telling her to chill out, but she couldn’t hear a word he was saying while attacking him. He had to flip her to gain some control, and when she hit the floor she cried out in pain. Neither one of them noticed Kingston standing in his doorway looking at them until he cried out and asked his mommy what she was doing to Unk. Keith got up and tried to push Cameron back into the room to keep Kingston from seeing anything else, but she still wasn’t thinking straight and was still trying to fight him. She didn’t calm down until Kingston started crying louder. Keith told her that he would talk to her later. She screamed and cursed at him and yelled for him to leave her house key, but he never stopped or even looked back.

  Chapter 16

Cameron sank back into a deep state of depression immediately after the incident she had with Keith last night. She couldn’t go to sleep after he left so she took four pills, drank a whole bottle of wine, and finally passed out. She woke up to her mom shaking her and calling her name. “CAMERON!! CAMERON!!” Her mom was screaming. “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? KINGSTON CALLED ME CRYING SAYING HE COULDN’T WAKE YOU UP!!” Her mom kept screaming.

“Mom, will you please stop screaming. My head is pounding enough already. I’m ok,” Cameron said. “You can’t be ok. It’s after five o’clock in the evening and you aren’t even out of the bed,” her mom said to her with an attitude. Cameron had no idea what time she had actually fallen asleep or that the whole day had pretty much passed her by. She had no idea that Kingston had been trying to wake her up all day. “Cameron, you are going to have to pull yourself together right now. I don’t know who all Kingston called before he called me, but he told me some of what happened. Now I heard that young man got married and so are you, so there is no reason for you to be fighting him about anything. He shouldn’t even be in this house and you know that. You know you are married to a fool,” Cameron’s mom said. Cameron couldn’t do anything but cry. She knew that she needed to pull herself together. She had left Kingston unattended all day and who knows how long it would have been if it had not been for him calling her mom. She was thankful that her mom had taught him important numbers to dial in c
ase of an emergency. “I’m gonna do better mom.” That was the only thing Cameron managed to say.

“I’m taking Kingston with me for the night, but you be at my house in an hour for dinner,” her mom said and walked off.

Cameron laid there for about ten more minutes before she finally moved. She checked her cell phone and saw missed calls from Malcolm, Toya and her aunt. She also had text messages from Malcolm, Toya, and the group. None from Keith. Cameron sighed. She didn’t bother calling or texting anybody back. She went and turned the shower on and brushed her teeth before stepping in. She stepped into the steamy, hot shower and let the hot water massage her skin. She started thinking about her life and the path that it had taken. She wondered exactly where she had gone wrong. What could she do different? She wished that she didn’t have Kingston, then maybe she could leave Malcolm without causing any problems or drama, but she quickly dismissed that thought. She loved her son and didn’t want to imagine life without him.

When Cameron got out of the shower she dried off and threw on some blue jean Miss Me shorts, a white tank top, and slipped on her brown and tan coach flats that were at the foot of the bed. She knew that her mom wasn’t in a good mood by the tone of her voice and she didn’t want to be on her mother’s bad side. She’d had several disagreements with her mom throughout the years and she found out exactly how far she could go after their biggest argument which was about a year ago. Cameron thought back to when she had caught her mom cheating on her dad and threatened to blackmail her. To this day, she still didn’t know exactly who the man was, but there was no way it was who she thought it was, so she dismissed that thought completely. She was only halfway serious about blackmailing her, but the grip her mother had on her neck quickly made her dismiss her thoughts altogether. Her mom had put so much fear in her that day, she felt like she was a five-year-old child who had gotten caught with their hands in the cookie jar. She knew that her mom protecting her on so many levels had to do not only with her love for her daughter, but also understanding where her daughter was coming from and how she felt. Her mom was still upset that her dad pushed her to get married at such an early age. Cameron also loved her dad to death, but it was no secret that he was boring when it came to a relationship and Cameron figured that was why her mom stepped out on him back then. The seriousness in her mother’s tone today when she told Cameron to be at her house in an hour was the same tone she had a year ago when she told her that the cliché, I brought her into this world and I will take you out, wasn’t really a cliché. Neither of them brought up that day again. She stopped reminiscing and hopped in her car and headed to her parents’ house.
