JJ sighed. “Just be careful and come right back. We leave in an hour.”
“Alright, I know.”
After Luke left, JJ said, “You gotta see the pool.”
They stepped outside. The pool was filled in. In its place was a new brick patio surrounded by gardens. It would have looked great except for one thing.
A blue metal barrel was standing in the middle of the patio. Spit was attached to the barrel by a ten-foot rope. The pit-bull got up and growled. The hair on his back stood up. Then he lay down again.
“He likes it out here,” JJ said. “Stays out here all day. Don’t bring him inside at all.”
“I thought you got him to protect your money,” Chuck said. “I thought you were keeping him in your camper.”
“I can’t keep him in there all the time. He likes it right where he is.”
“Your cash is safe, right?”
“Couldn’t be any safer.”
“I see.” Chuck nodded. He took a long look at the blue barrel that Spit was tied to. “I guess you know what you’re doing.”
“Yeah, well, we’re going camping for the weekend.”
“Really, what about Spit?”
“We’re taking him with us.”
“What about the barrel?”
“Don’t you worry about it, Chuck. I’ve got a plan. I’ve got it all worked out.”
“I’m sure you do.”
