She giggled against his chest and gave his back a friendly pat. “Is this some sort of surprise or something?”

“Back up onto the sidewalk,” he told her. She laughed and stepped back. Then he tore off across the street.

It took him a moment to find Gabriel, standing behind a tree trunk, enough out of Sullivan’s view that she wouldn’t see him. When he got to Gabriel, the smile the angel wore was pure saccharine.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?!” Jarrod yelled. “Why would you tell me she’s going to get hit? It wasn’t even close!”

“I didn’t say she was going to get hit.” Gabriel leaned in closer, clutched Jarrod’s shoulder and brought his lips to his ear. “You were bored and too hot sitting on the bench. You went to meet her when she got off. You were excited about dinner so you weren’t looking.”

  Jarrod tensed. “What?”

“The driver didn’t see you. There was a glare.”

“Me? The car was supposed to hit me?”

“Your path is still reforming. There are some splits,” Gabriel said, holding out two spread fingers. “This one could have ended badly. But now…” He turned them just enough so he could see Sullivan standing across the way, her smile still playful. When he looked back at Jarrod, the grin had only grown wider.

“She’ll start college next fall,” Gabe said. “You’ll be so proud of her that you’re going to have a small party at the restaurant you work at, because you know how much it means to Sullivan. Just a few of both your friends from work. But there will be others there. At the party—”

Jarrod cocked his head. Was someone dangerous going to show up? Was Gabe warning him the way just had with the car?

Gabe went on. “Eden won’t want to go that night, but she’d never let you two down. Sullivan will buy her a new dress. It will be a good night and though she’s happy, all the people and all the laughing will make Eden feel a little lonely. There will be a guy there,” Gabe said softly. “Who notices her standing alone and makes a joke about cheap sea food. Who reminds her just a little bit of someone, but not enough to hurt…" He swallowed hard. "Az would want her happy. Make sure she remembers that.”

Gabriel let him go, smiling as he walked backward down the sidewalk, away.

“What did you do?” Jarrod asked, wonder in his voice.

Just before Gabriel disappeared, he winked. “I gave you happily ever afters.”

Thank you for reading THE SIDERS SERIES! If you enjoyed the books, I would greatly appreciate it if you could consider adding a review on your online bookstore of choice.

Reviews make a huge difference to the success or failure of a book, especially for writers like myself. The more reviews a book has, the more people are likely to take a shot on picking it up. The review need only be a line or two, and it really would make the world of difference for me if you could spare the three minutes it takes to leave one.

  With all my thanks,
