And the idea was born. How about a book that explained who they were, and why they were there?
The idea excited me, then when combined with the mystery of the disappearance of the True Cross, the plot for this book was born.
But it was a mistake.
A mistake that pigeonholed me.
For the identity of the four knights had been revealed in The Templar’s Relic, and they didn’t match with what I had been writing. The reviewer had been mistaken.
This is the problem when you have dozens of books—it’s hard to remember what you’ve written!
But I am a writer, and getting myself out of corners I’ve boxed myself into is something that I thrive on. So the fake nameplates were born. Problem solved. I think it was a clever way to deal with the issue, and I hope you agree.
Another challenge, of course, was that The Templar’s Relic was centered around the scroll with the Koranic verse, and not the True Cross. Weaving those events into this story was also tricky without dwelling on them, and if you haven’t read The Templar’s Relic, I encourage you to do so, so you can read even more about these characters and the scroll.
As many of you are aware, I like to take things from my life and throw them into my books. This one included the little Spanish town of L’Estartit, where I visited three times as a child, but also a little story from when we were driving down there the first or second time. The Reading anecdote about snorting his allergy medicine while approaching the border is from my own life. Good times!
