A Man's Heart

They walked through the empty airport carrying the sleeping children — children Jules prayed would be hers soon. For the first time in many years, life felt so right. Absolutely perfect. “Do you think Sophie is looking down on us right now?”
Cruz grinned. “No, I think my sister is most likely sitting in the middle of a Krispy Kreme conveyor belt, eating to her heart’s content—if heaven has a Krispy Kreme.”
Jules chuckled. Heaven must undoubtedly have a Krispy Kreme. “She was a sweet freak.” She sobered. “This is what she wanted, you know. She set this whole thing up, praying that we would fall for her scheme.”
“I think we both came to that conclusion a long time ago.” He turned and stole a kiss. “Good for her.”
They paused, his eyes twinkling with mischief. For the briefest of moments, Jules recognized Sophie lurking in that rascally grin. “Got something for you.” He fished in his pocket and took out a small wrapped box. Jules’s heart thumped so loudly she thought he might hear her reaction. “For me?”
A ring? She assumed it would be months before he fully trusted her enough to propose marriage a third time. She untied the ribbon and opened the box to find a gold bracelet. Disappointment flooded her but she kept a brave face. “It’s lovely—thank you.”
Tipping her face to meet his, he said softly, “One day at a time?”
Nodding, she slipped the token of his love on her wrist. “One day at a time.”
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was confidence. The only thing that mattered was that his love and trust was under construction.
She leaned to kiss him as they walked through the automatic double terminal doors, each balancing a sleeping child on their hip. “Wise woman, your sister.”
“Sophie was the best,” he agreed.
The best friend a woman ever had, she silently agreed. Sometimes the greatest tragedy brought unspeakable joy.
Funny how God works.

Very few things distract Katie Addison when she’s on a mission, whether it’s opening her home to abused women, rehabilitating injured horses, or helping tall, gorgeous Warren Tate mend his broken heart. But when financial difficulties pile up for her, Katie hesitantly admits she herself may need help.
Since his fiance left him, Warren is done with women — especially independent women, which he’d guess describes Katie Addison to a tee. Reluctantly he agrees to help Katie with her financial troubles. But when his budget doesn’t include Katie’s daily lattes, Warren realizes he may have a challenging client on his hands.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Ben O’Keefe can’t seem to get Katie’s attention. Everyone in town knows he has had a longstanding crush on her. But to Katie, Ben is just Ben. When mysterious events turn Katie to him for help, is it the chance Ben has been waiting for?
