  “The pilot isn’t thrilled about taking off,” Anna said as she walked toward me. “It took some persuading, but he should be good to go. All flights have been grounded because of the tsunami and the earthquake, so if we are going to go, we need to do it now.”

  “Let’s get going, then, while we can.” We left the Suburban parked in front of the hangar and boarded the posh plane.

  The pilot sped through his preflight checklist, and taxied out to the runway.

  Anna sat behind him with her Glock trained at the back of his seat.

  I sat across from her, watching the pilot’s every move. I tugged at the seat belt around my waist, ensuring that it was secured.

  The engines roared. The jet vibrated.

  I gripped the brown leather armrest a hair tighter.

  The aircraft tore down the runway, then lifted into the blackening sky.

  I closed my eyes, and swallowed the trepidation that swirled in the pit of my stomach. I pulled the phone from my pocket, hoping that I might find some good fortune and have a message from Janet.

  I thumbed the power button. The screen lit up bright white, then pinged.

  A voicemail waited.

  I played the message, and held the phone to my ear as the plane climbed higher into the sky.

  “Cory, it’s me. I don’t have much time. Someone followed Petey home from school. We got away, but we didn’t know what to do, so we went to the safe house. I’m going to do what you suggested, and toss this phone. And we’ll wait for you there. I love you.”
