Nor can I, in discussing all this, omit the Indiana contingent: William E. Jenner Jr., who directed me to his father’s papers at Hanover College; Wilma Wood, who provided me with a priceless set of Congressional Records formerly belonging to Senator Jenner; Bob Galm and Dave Tudor, who arranged for the acquisition and delivery of these volumes. As to more contemporaneous developments in Congress, I am indebted to Representative Steve King of Iowa and his staffer Bentley Graves, who have taken an active interest in the security issues addressed herein and a leading role in seeking the release of relevant data. Thanks also to Phil Kiko on the staff of Representative Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin for efforts to shake free long-secret records.

As for the production aspects of the book, special thanks are owing to Mark LaRochelle, researcher and computer maven par excellence, whose assistance in putting the manuscript on disk has been integral to the process, and who has otherwise aided me greatly in nailing down details on innumerable topics. He and the equally proficient Alex Adrianson, who did similar duty, have together put in almost as many hours on this volume as have I. Their expertise has been of utmost value in helping this incorrigible Luddite cope, if barely, with the realities of publishing in the computer era.

Production and research assistance were provided as well by my long-time assistant (and friend) Irma White; Malcolm Kline, who for many diligent years helped me research internal security and other matters; Don Todd and Brenda Carter, who assisted with the dubbing and transcription of tapes; Peter Spencer, who provided timely research aid on numerous subjects; Kathy Burns and Rick Henderson, who supplied background data on McCarthy’s 1950 foray to Nevada; and Fred Mann, who tracked McCarthy’s travels back to Washington via Wisconsin and other way stations on the journey. My thanks also to the estimable Mary Jo Buck-land, who held things together at the office while I was struggling with this project.

Still others have assisted me in ways too numerous to mention. I am especially grateful to William F. Buckley Jr., whose long-ago McCarthy studies conducted with Brent Bozell have more than stood the test of time, and who through the Historical Research Foundation provided financial assistance for my own researches on the issue. Thanks also to Patrick Sullivan, Roger Milliken, Dan Hales, Joe and Augusta Petrone, Tom Pauken, Neal Freeman, Alfred Regnery, and Tom Winter, who have encouraged me in this and related efforts; my agent and wise counselor Alex Hoyt; and my perspicacious editor at Crown Forum, Jed Donahue. All have been valued companions on a lengthy expedition.
