Miranda stared at Drew as his words finally sunk in. He loved her?

“And now I get this email from you saying you finally realized that you’re in love with me, and I had to fly out here and hear it from your lips, because the universe likes to toy with me, Miranda. It likes to make me think I have a chance at getting what I want, then it yanks it away.”

She put her fingers over her mouth to hold in a smile. He loved her. Had loved her for years, and she never knew it. Her heart pounded. She opened her mouth to speak but he interrupted her.

“So please, let me have it, because I’ve been going crazy for three hours and ten minutes and I need to know. Did you mean what you said in your email?”

She whacked him in the chest. “Are you finished?”

He blinked and looked at her with wide eyes. “Uh, yes?”

“Good. Because you make me so crazy sometimes.”

He stood there, staring at her. When she didn’t say anything else, his shoulders sagged. “Will you just answer the question?”

She threw her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his. She’d meant for it to be a quick kiss, but he took over, pressing her up against the wall. She threaded her fingers in his hair and closed her eyes. Electricity pumped through her veins. His lips moved to her jaw, and then to her neck.

“Yes, I meant it,” she whispered as he kissed her. “Every word. I’m in love with you.”

He leaned back and smiled at her. “Tell me again if you meant it?”

She giggled and kissed him again. This time they didn’t come up for air for quite a while.

  Epilogue

Miranda paced the small room, opening and closing her hands. Her mother stood by the large mirror. “Settle down. You’re going to wear a hole into the floor.”

Excitement shot through Miranda, and she turned to her mother. “I’m sorry. I just can’t wait any longer.”

Her mother gave her a knowing smile. “I’m so glad you finally woke up and realized you love that man.”

Miranda looked in the mirror and smoothed down the front of her Galactic Union uniform. Quite the nontraditional wedding attire, but that’s what made it perfect. “I can’t understand why I didn’t see it for so long.”

“Well, that’s all in the past. Don’t fret about it. It’s your wedding day.”

The room tilted a little and Miranda grabbed the back of the chair. Good thing she’d finally gotten some sea legs. “Yes. And I really want to go out there.”

“Not until it’s time. But don’t worry.” Her mother checked her watch. She was being a great sport, even wearing the Star Venture Zee dress. “It’s almost time.”

Good. Because six months was too long to wait to be Drew’s wife. She adjusted her hair and made sure her makeup wasn’t smudged.

A knock came on the door, and her mother threw it open. “It’s time.”

Peter Walker in his full captain’s uniform stepped into the room. “Miranda. Lovely to see you again. You look radiant.” It was amazing what Drew could make happen when money was no object.

She smiled and took his arm. Tongue-tied, she tried to speak but couldn’t. Finally, she squeaked out, “Thank you.”

Her mother kissed her cheek and rushed toward the door. “Time for me to go.”

Peter walked her out of the room and into the hallway. A photographer snapped pictures while they stood there. Peter turned to her. “That man really loves you.”

She nodded, her throat tightening. “I know.”

When it was time, he walked her down to the stern of the ship where all of their invited guests were seated. A gentle sea breeze blew. The theme song to Star Venture played and Peter walked her down the aisle to where Drew stood. He looked amazingly handsome. And geeky, dressed in his Star Venture outfit. But when he smiled at her, her chest constricted, and she had to blink to stop herself from crying. He was going to be her husband. They were so perfect for each other.

She took Drew’s hand, nerves shooting through her. The ceremony didn’t last long, and soon it was time to kiss her new husband. He turned toward her, a smile in his eyes. She didn’t hold back, throwing her arms around his neck and giving him a kiss he would remember. Everyone cheered.

After the cake and the tossing of the bouquet, Drew took her in his arms for their first dance as a married couple. She smiled up at him. “Thanks for making this day memorable, squirt.”

He chuckled. “Don’t I get a new nickname? I hate that one.”

She laughed and tried to mess up his hair, but he caught her wrist first. “Oh no you don’t.”

“Fine. I’ll stop calling you that.”

  “How about sweetheart?”

“As a new nickname? That’s so boring.”

He nuzzled her neck. “I kind of like it.”

  She made a face. “Nope.”

He sobered. “You know what nickname I’d really like?”

  “What?”

  His lips twitched. “Daddy.”

Tingles shot through her. “I think we can start working on that one.”

  “Really?” His eyebrows lifted.

“Anything for you,” she said, unable to stop grinning.
