A Favor for the Prince

“I really have no intention—”
“Did my mother tell you about the gift he sent her from the islands?”
Ariel shook her head.
“Ah.” He laughed. “You would have to see that first.”
“Alan!” She raised her hands to his chest as he looked down at her. “Be serious.”
One corner of his mouth curved upward. “I have spent most of my life being serious. I believe I’ll give it up.”
“But your family…”
His arms slid down to encircle her waist, and the merriment faded from his eyes. “You’ve given me the gift of my family, and for that, as for so many other things, I am deeply grateful.”
Ariel held his gaze. She found she was holding her breath as well.
“A man never made a better bargain,” he added, pulling her closer.
Ariel relaxed in his embrace. “I got the best of it,” she replied.
“Do you think so?”
She nodded.
His smile broadened. “I intend to make sure you never change your mind about that,” he said and bent to kiss her.
