Preacher
Page 18
We come to a stop on the shoulder and I stop and take one last look back at the town I grew up in, and the town that was so important in forming who I am as a person.
“Goodbye, dad,” I whisper.
Preacher slips his arm around me and we stare down at the city together. A minute passes and I look up at him.
“Are you ready?” He says.
I nod. “I’m ready.”
Together, we get back on the bike and it roars to life between or legs. The gravel on the shoulder crunches beneath our wheels, and then we are back on the interstate. This is the start of a new chapter in my life, one where I’m free of everything that’s kept me tied to the past. A smile comes to my lips as we round the bend and the city disappears behind us.
“Hold on,” Preacher yells to me over the sound of the highway. “I’m going to open her up.”
My only answer is a ‘whoop’ as we speed faster and faster down the road, the open countryside flying by around us, cars honking as we blow by them on the road, and the bike roaring between our legs like some kind of animal.
It’s the start of our first real ride together.
But certainly not our last.
