Catching sight of David standing behind Dusty, Kory shoved him aside and bounced over to where David stood with a deer-in-the-headlights look plastered on his face. “David, it’s good to see you again,” Kory addressed him, smiling.

“Ah, yeah, good to see…see you again too.” David held his hand out, squeaking like a mouse when Kory bypassed his hand and pulled him into a hug.

“Stop manhandling the guy, Kory.” Jon playfully chastised his boyfriend, grabbing Kory by the arm and pulling him away from David. Dusty moved over next to him, wrapping an arm around David and holding him close, worrying right away when he felt David’s body shaking.

“Why don’t you and Jon have a seat and I’ll get you both a beer?” Dusty jerked his head toward the couch, quickly heading for the kitchen and taking David with him.

He pulled David into a strong hug, tucking his head under his chin once they were out of Kory’s direct line of sight. “Hey, it’ll be okay babe, I promise. We’re going to get us all a beer and then we are going to go back out there and tell them everything, right now. I won’t have you uncomfortable in your own home.”

David jerked back, staring up at him with wide eyes. “You…you’re worried about me?” He sounded astonished.

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be D? You’re shaking like a leaf,” Dusty whispered.

“Dude, it doesn’t take that long to grab a beer,” Kory called out.

“Would you shut up?” Jon sounded aggravated. Not angry, but definitely aggravated.

“This is it D, moment of truth.” Dusty waited until David inhaled a deep breath, steadying himself before grabbing two beers and heading back to the living room. He gave one to Jon then sat down in the chair beside the couch. Dusty gave one of the two beers he carried to Kory then sat on the arm of the chair with David.

Kory eyed them both, squinting before twisting the cap off his beer and taking a long pull from the bottle. “All right, what’s up? You two are acting like a couple of long tailed cats in a room full of rocking chairs.”

Jon had just taken a swig of his beer. He sputtered and spewed, wiping his mouth with the sleeve of his shirt. “Nice babe, real nice.”

“Well they are. Spit it out D, did you get David pregnant? Eloping to Vegas? What’s up?” Kory was on a roll.

“Oh my god! You’re driving me crazy!” David shouted. “My last name is Thompson. I’m Dale Thompson’s little brother, yes, that’s right, the guy that tried to kill your boyfriend…” David pointed at Jon. “…was my brother. He literally tried to beat me to death and damn near succeeded before he went and shot up that club, which is also my fault. He caught me and my boyfriend Troy leaving the bar and went ballistic. So after he stomped a mud hole in my ass he went back to the bar and went postal. There, I said it; no more hiding!” David stood so fast that his beer fell to the floor and spilled before he ran into the bedroom and slammed the door.

Dusty sat slack-jawed, staring at the now-empty hallway. “Dusty, is that true? Are you fucking the brother of the man that almost killed my boyfriend?” Kory’s tone was dark and menacing. When Dusty turned to face him his expression was one of anger and fear.

Jon spoke first, which was a bit shocking. “Kory, I think you need to take a minute and think before you say anything you can’t be forgiven for.”

Kory rounded on Jon, eyes wide. “What—” Jon cut him off with one wave of his hand.

“No Kory, we are not going to use the shooting as a tool to hurt someone. Did you listen to that young man? I mean really listen to him? He is not at fault here, his brother is. That…fuck, he’s barely older than a kid…he did not pull the trigger, Kory.” Kory was fuming, all but foaming at the mouth he was so angry. Jon took Kory’s face in his hands. “Listen to me babe, if you want to know everything, if you value your friendship with Dusty, you need to calm down and listen.” Kory closed his eyes, a stray tear trailing down his cheek. “Dusty, will you go check on David and give us a minute, please?” Jon asked.

Dusty nodded. “Yeah, okay.” He stood and walked toward the bedroom. He could hear David crying before he got to the door and he mentally kicked himself for not going after him sooner.

David was curled up in the fetal position in the middle of the bed, crying. “D, baby, it’s okay.” Dusty crawled up behind him, wrapping his arms protectively around David. “I’m so sorry D, I should have been right behind you.” He didn’t know how long they were in the bedroom. He refused to even consider leaving David alone until he calmed down. And then, it would only be long enough to ask Kory and Jon to leave. Hell, if they were even still there—they could already be long gone.

Finally, when David’s tears dried up, Dusty sat up and scooted to the foot of the bed. “I’ll be right back babe, I’m going to see if they’re even still here, send them home if they are and lock up.”

David placed one hand on his shoulder. “No, wait, I’ll come with.” He sounded so weak and defeated, it broke Dusty’s heart.

“Are you sure?” he asked, turning to look at David. He nodded, climbing off the bed and straightening his clothes, patting his hair. Dusty chuckled, wrapping an arm around David and pulling him in for a quick kiss. “I love you.”

  “I love you too.”

Dusty was actually shocked to walk back out into the living room and find Jon and Kory still there. Kory stood as soon as they came into the room. “Dusty, I apologize, you caught me off guard and I’m still pissed that you kept this from me. But Jon’s right, I should at least hear you out.” Jon cleared his throat, loudly. “And I’m sorry if I upset you David.” Kory said, robotically, falling back down onto the couch next to Jon with a sigh.

“Good boy.” Jon patted Kory on the thigh.

Kory shoved his hand away. “Fuck off,” he muttered, turning his attention back to Dusty and David. “Okay, tell me everything, from the beginning.” And so they did.

Dusty started with the first day he’d wandered into David’s hospital room. Rattling off the list of injuries, the condition David was in that first day. The longer he and Jon sat and listened, the more it seemed some of the anger Kory was so desperately trying to hold onto ebbed away. David did his best to relay what happened on his end, how his brother had found him and Troy, snatching him off the street and the subsequent events prior to going back to The Monster Bar to wreak havoc.

They were all quiet for a long time, everyone soaking it all in. Finally, Kory released a pent up breath. “I’m sorry for what happened to you, David. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. It’s just…I almost lost him and…it’s going to take some time for me to work that all out for myself. I know it’s not your fault, but when I look at you now, all I see is him, your brother.”

“That’s okay, I understand,” David replied, shocking the shit out of Dusty.

“Say what now?” Dusty asked, confused.

“It’s okay D; I was in the bedroom, crying, waiting on your sorry ass to come after me…” David nudged Dusty with his shoulder, staring up at him with a lopsided grin. “…and when I stopped worrying about whether or not your best friend would hate me, I started trying to put myself in his shoes. If I were him and you Jon, I wouldn’t like him very much either.” David spoke softly, calmly, all traces of anxiety from earlier washed away.

“Wow, how’d you get so smart, babe?” Dusty grinned, kissing him on the forehead.

“Well, I think Tristan has a lot to do with it. He and I have been working on…”

Jon cut David off with a wave of his hand. “Whoa, did you just say Tristan? Tristan Brennan, my brother? That Tristan Brennan?” David and Dusty nodded. “So, my brother is what…your therapist?” David and Dusty simply nodded again.

“Wow, okay, small world.” Jon pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing. “I’m sorry to put a damper on the evening, but I think Kory and I should leave now. I hate that you went to all this trouble though, and now we’re just going to up and leave.” Jon sounded a little upset, Dusty thought. Whether he was upset with hi
m, David, Kory or his brother remained to be seen. As a cop, Jon was certainly aware of confidentiality. But as a brother, he was probably irritated that Tristan hadn’t shared this with him.

“That’s okay. Do you want me to put some stew in a bowl for you two to take with? I can wrap up some cornbread as well.” David rose and walked into the kitchen, not waiting for a yay or nay. Dusty took notice of Kory watching David walk away, the slight grin he wore.

David waited in the apartment while Dusty walked Kory and Jon to the elevator. They stood in awkward silence, waiting. When the doors opened Jon stepped in, but Kory stood rooted in place beside Dusty in the hall. “I can see the way you two look at each other and I’m happy you finally found someone, D. It’s just…I’m gonna need a little time to work this all out in my head.” He looked at Dusty, his face a mixture of pain and resentment. “I feel betrayed, D. You’re my best friend and you kept this from me for months and months.”

Dusty grabbed him and pulled him in for a hug, apologizing again. “I’m so sorry Kory. I guess I didn’t handle this the right way and I didn’t mean to alienate you. I love him man, with all my heart. As much as I love you—you’re like the brother I never had, but he has to come first now, just like I damn well hope Jon comes first for you.”

Kory pulled back and nodded, the anger seeming to seep away. Nothing more was said; Kory stepped into the elevator and right as the doors were closing, he smiled and waved. Maybe they’d get past this after all.

Chapter 14 | Tired of Hiding

A few weeks after the dinner from hell, Andrew called to invite them out to the house that weekend for a BBQ. “Damn near everybody is going to be here, including Jordan and Kassie, so it’d be great if you and the mystery guy could join us,” Andrew teased.

“Of course we’ll be there.” Dusty had been trying to figure out a way to get everyone together so they could share their secret for the last time and be done with it. So Andrew’s invitation came at the perfect time.

“Fantastic. We’ll see you Sunday around noon.” Andrew said goodbye before hanging up.

Finally opening up to Kory lifted an invisible weight off both Dusty and David’s shoulders. The fog that seemed to follow David everywhere he went evaporated and he walked a little taller, held his shoulders higher; he was no longer buried under the heaviness of the lie. Tristan took notice as well, agreeing with David when he suggested stopping the weekly visits and maybe going to once a month.

“Let’s cut back to every other week, the first and the fifteenth roughly, how’s that?” Tristan suggested. He realized they were at a momentary impasse when David didn’t immediately agree. Instead, he crossed his arms over his chest and sulked.

Tristan pursed his lips to keep from chuckling. He sometimes forgot just how young David was. “You’ve made so much progress since leaving the hospital David, and while I can recognize that and understand you wanting to cut back on sessions. I don’t feel that going from weekly visits to monthly would be in your best interest yet.”

Tristan pressed on. “A compromise perhaps? Let’s go to every other week for a couple of months and as long as the change doesn’t have a negative impact on your life, we can revisit monthly sessions. Sound good?” David had nodded with a wide grin, perking up a bit, his posture visibly relaxing.

  ***

They woke early on Sunday morning and went for a run before popping into a café a couple of blocks from the apartment for coffee and danish. Exchanging blow jobs in the shower when they got home helped calm David’s nerves. Nowhere near as edgy as he used to be, David still got nervous if they were going to be somewhere with a lot of people, and Dusty figured out long ago that the easiest way to calm his boyfriend was to make him come. It was like a sedative, but without all the wonky side effects that came with pills.

Dusty was tying his shoes when his phone rang. A glance at the caller ID said it was his dad. He almost let it go to voicemail. His dad could rattle on for hours once he got started. “Hey, Dad.”

“Dusty, I’m glad I got you; I expected your voicemail,” he said with a chuckle. “Listen, I have some vacation time coming and I wanted to fly out there to see you.”

  “You and Mom?”

“No son, only me.” There was an edge to his father’s voice that worried Dusty.

“What’s going on, Dad? Is everything okay with you and Mom?”

“Yeah, yeah, nothing to worry about.” He pressed on. “So, how about next week?”

“That soon? Okay. David and I are heading out to the big house for a BBQ; I’ll double check that I’m not on the schedule next week, and if so, try to get someone to replace me.” Dusty had always been up front and honest with his parents about everything. He came out when he was thirteen, got caught getting a blow job from a teenager in their neighborhood in the back yard at fourteen, moved to New York to pursue an acting career at eighteen and started shooting porn when he was nineteen. His parents were very laid back and always stayed out of his way, letting Dusty make his own decisions, but making sure he owned any mistakes he made as well.

“Good, I’m happy you agree since I already bought my plane ticket.” His Dad’s melodic laugh made Dusty smile.

“We’re actually running late now Dad; can you email me all the info on your flight? I’ll make sure I can pick you up at the airport. Oh, and you don’t need to get a hotel, William moved out and we’re still in this apartment for another month, so you can sleep in his old room.”

David popped into the bedroom, pointing at his watch to indicate the time. “Be right there,” Dusty mouthed, saying goodbye to his dad and finally disconnecting the call.

  “Everything okay?” David asked.

“Yeah, my dad is coming to visit.”

David reached for him, running his hand down Dusty’s arm and twining their fingers together. “You don’t sound happy about that, babe.”

“He sounded…off. And he’s coming alone, which is odd.” He lifted their joined hands to his mouth, kissing David’s knuckles. “I’m probably reading too much into it—we need to get going though, we’re already running late.”

The drive out to Mamaroneck went by quickly; they spent the time listening to a new audiobook Dusty had purchased. Understandably, David was a little bit anxious, his level of anxiety rising when they arrived and he took in all the cars and trucks already there. Dusty jumped out, walked around and opened the door for him. As soon as David’s feet were underneath him, Dusty pulled him close and kissed him tenderly. “It’ll be fine D; these people are like family to me. I think we jumped the biggest hurdle when we told Kory and Jon.”

Speaking of, Dusty looked for Jon or Kory’s vehicle, a little be bummed that neither were there. It was probably for the best though, since he and Kory hadn’t spoken since the dinner from hell and the first thing on his agenda today was to sit everyone in the house down and share the story once again. As soon as they darted through the door, Mattie was on them.

“Dusty. You made it.” Mattie grinned, grabbing Dusty and hugging him. He turned to David, grin growing wider and, thank fuck, opted for a hand shake instead of a hug. “You must be David. I’m Matthew, but you can call me Mattie.”

  “Hi.” David croaked.

Mattie threw an arm over David’s shoulder, pulling him away from Dusty as he sounded off the roll call. “The one by the stove is my husband Andrew, the big brooding one over there is my husband Victor, Chris and Linc are over there on the couch playing X-Box.” Mattie paused a beat and Chris and Linc hollered hello, never taking their eyes off the game they were playing. “Jacob is the tall one, Tommy is the one with the long black hair and Beau is the one staring daggers at Jacob. William is doing his best to stop Beau from killing Jacob so someday soon, Jacob and Tommy can be more than friends.” David nodded numbly.

“And I believe you’ve already met everyone around the table.” Tristan, Gabe, Micah, Jordan and Kassie were all sitting at the huge table playing Cards Against Humanity.

&n
bsp; Tristan stood and walked around the table. He gave Dusty a one-armed hug, leaning close enough so only the three of them would hear. “How are you doing David? Is this too much, or…” he let the question hang in the air.

“I…I’m okay. It’s just a lot of people and I’ll never remember half their names.” He chuckled.

Mattie breezed past him carrying six beers in his arms. “Oh honey, didn’t Dusty tell you, there will be a test before you can have dinner?”

David’s eyes went wide, but Tristan took pity on him. “He’s kidding David, pay him no attention.” Leaning close and whispering again. “When do you want to do this, Dusty?”

  “Now would probably be good.”

Tristan nodded, standing up straight and whistling to get everyone’s attention. It took a few minutes to herd all the bodies into the den, confusion and worry etched on several of the guys’ faces. “What is being wrong Dusty?” Victor asked. Concern etched in the wrinkles creasing his forehead.
