Confessions of a Vigilante

Sergio squatted. They were nose to nose. “You are the horror. You killed pop, the woman I love, tried to kill my baby girl. Taught me how to take a life, fuckin’ encouraged it. What kind of mom does that?”
Loretta said, “That whore was no good for you. She wanted to turn you against me. I mean, my God, now she turned both sons against me.”
Loretta’s head swerved to meet David’s eyes. “Traitor. You tie up your mother, treat me like some monster. I raised you, fed you, made sure there was a roof over your head.”
“You need help, mom,” said David, “you live in a fantasy world. How could you sit here and defend killing innocent people? Tell your son about how you were the one who dropped a dime to the police about the robbery. Sent him to prison to keep him away from Jackie.”
“None of them were innocent, your father, Jackie.”
“That true mom?” said Sergio. “You ratted me out to the cops. Your own son?”
“It was for your own good. I had to save you from that gi…”
Before Loretta could finish her words. Sergio’s hands were wrapped around her throat. “Fuckin’ bitch, I loved her. How could you? You ruined my life. Took everything from me.”
Megan and David stepped back and watched as Sergio strangled the life out of his mother. Sergio slumped to the ground, his hands twitching.
“I’d like to visit your mother’s grave. See her one last time.” Sergio asked Megan.
Megan crouched down next to her father. “It doesn’t have to be the last time. We can run together, all of us. I can finally get to know my father.”
Sergio shook his head. “Baby girl, you already know who I am. Isn’t that what this day was about?”
“I saw some good in you today. Good I never thought existed.”
Sergio’s eyes were filled with water. He massaged Megan’s face. “I’m a killer. That’s what I am. I fooled myself into thinking I can be anything else. I can’t change. I get urges. I can’t control them. My next victim might be some school teacher from Montana. No, I fucked up in life. The only good that came out of it was you and your mother. I’m a parasite. My own brother changed his name. That’s probably why you changed your name. Get a fresh start. Get away from that worthless blood that runs through your veins. It’s time I go and be with her.”
Sergio reached for his daughter, hugging her. He didn’t want to let go. Sergio reached for David’s hand. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you little brother.”

Sergio placed a bouquet of flowers on the tombstone. Here lies Jackie Korth, Beloved daughter, mother. He brushed the leaves and dirt away. I’m sorry baby. Please don’t hate me.
He lied down next to the tombstone and took a needle out of his jacket pocket. He injected himself and waited for the poison to take effect, washing away his Sins of The Past. Hold on Jackie, I’m coming.
