We also have an incredible group of friends. Our kids met in junior kindergarten (they’re now in college) and we’ve remained friends since then. Tonette and I really love Anne and Gene Genal, Nancy and Keith Harmon, Laura and Chris Lange, Ruth and Mark Meidl, and Claire and Dick Pankratz. We do a fair amount of social events with them and our great friends Candee and Ray Arndt. We love the pond parties at Crystal and Jim Berg’s home and hunting with Jim and Tom Balistrieri. Thanks for keeping us real and focused on our family and friends!

My agent, Glen Hartley, is the best in the business. Bria Sanford is an incredible editor, and I am grateful to her, Adrian Zackheim, and all the talented folks at Penguin. Ed Gillespie, Charlie Sykes, Dennis Smith, and Brian Riedl read drafts of the book, and their insights were invaluable. Craig Shirley shared his unique knowledge of the history of the 1980 Reagan campaign. Justin Lang provided incredible research, and together with Ian Peterson, Heather Malacaria, Emly Cashel, Jill Mattox, and Keith Miller ably transcribed dozens of hours of interviews. And I am grateful to the family of my coauthor—Pam Thiessen and their children Max, Jack, Eva, and Lucy.

Special thanks to Marc for really spending the time to understand me and my family and what really took place in Wisconsin. It is quite an honor to have such a gifted scholar share my passion for reform and help me put these ideas into the format of a book.

And finally, a personal thanks to the voters of Wisconsin for your faith in me—not once but twice—to serve as your governor. I will not let you down!
