  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Story of Film has its origins in an article about my TV series Scene by Scene, commissioned by Ruth Metzstein for London’s Independent on Sunday. In it, I wrote that there is no accessible, single-volume history of world cinema for intelligent general readers. Vivien James at Pavilion asked me twice to write such a book, so what you have before you was as much her idea as mine.

Thereafter, many people were involved. My peerless agent Caroline Chignell at PBJ management taught me so much about the world of books. Lizzy Gray, my editor, was central to the project, her dedication driving it throughout. Picture researcher Zoë Holtermann presented us with a treasure trove of images and found her way through the labyrinth of their permissions. She was adeptly helped by Jamie Dikomite and Tim Wright. When the exact picture was not available, Andrew Borthwick expertly sourced and burnt screen grabs. Tony Rayns generously provided tapes for the latter. Alexander Ballinger helped standardize the film titles and iron out inconsistencies.

After I delivered the manuscript, Pavilion’s Kate Oldfield imaginatively squired it to its present state. Her overview was invaluable and I benefited from it. Designer Jason Godfrey presented the material with clarity and grace. Roger Hudson was a lucid, talented and tough editorial eye. David Parkinson was tougher still and his detailed comments improved this book. I appreciate, too, the wise responses of Kevin Macdonald, Walter Donohoe and Professor Grahame Smith. I would also like to thank the publishing team behind the scenes: Richard Quinn and Marcus Leaver. Thank you, also, Stuart Cooper. Phil at The Kobal Collection and Martin at The Ronald Grant Archive provided many of the wonderful images in the book.

GLM was with me throughout this project. Her vitality fuels mine.
