She had reached a small clearing, where trees lay toppled to the ground like dominos. That’s not what her mind registered. Her eyes were focused on the Greek Adonis standing in the open space. His back was to her which afforded her a full body perusal. He was well over six feet. At least a foot taller than her own 5’ 2”. His blond hair fell in layers just above the neck of his black t-shirt which hugged every bicep and showed off his tapered waist. And those jeans, it was the cutest butt she had seen in a long time.
A whimper stopped her from moving out of the shadows. What was this man doing? And that’s when she saw him. Allen? Her boss lay on the ground, writhing in pain. He was pulling at his neck, trying to remove invisible hands from his throat. She stood frozen, her chest constricted as drool streamed out of Allen’s mouth, his face turning red. But how? Do something, Marlena!
The god of a man flicked his wrist and Allen sucked in gulps of air. She couldn’t believe her eyes. The man she was lusting over was . . .
His arm raised, lifting Allen with some invisible force. Fear spread through her chest. She stepped back into darker shadows so that Allen wouldn’t give her away.
Tears streamed down her boss’ face. “Please,” he begged, “I’ve got money. I’ll give you everything I have.”
The god-like man muttered something she couldn’t make out but whatever it was couldn’t be good. Allen’s face went white.
“I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry.”
Allen’s body twisted at odd angles. That’s when she heard the SNAP. His arm dangled freely while he was still suspended in midair. Marlena felt the nausea rising in her throat.
The god man tilted his head back. A white mist appeared above Allen and moved in an arc to the other man. “Please,” Allen begged once more, “Please don’t kill me.” His voice was weaker this time. “Please have mercy.”
Fear kept her rooted in place. The man reached upwards, Allen’s legs raised and twisted. The next moments blurred as a scream tore from her chest, alerting the magical killer of her presence. Just the slightest twist of his body sent her feet into motion. She fled as fast as her heels would let her, stepping out of them at some point and continuing on in her bare feet. Tree limbs snatched at her legs and hair.
WHAM. She plowed head first into the hardest body she had ever touched. Slowly tilting her head up, Marlena screamed. The anger in his blue eyes sent her scrambling backwards. How did he get in front of me? She stumbled, caught by strong hands before she hit the ground. His hand curved around her upper arm in an iron-like grip, biting into her soft flesh.
“No.” She screamed.
The man ignored her and began walking back to the clearing. Marlena pulled and tugged at his fingers, planting her feet in the dirt. Mr. Greek-God-With-Supernatural-Powers didn’t care that she was unwilling to cooperate as he continued on, dragging her as if her 150 pound body weighed no more than a small child.
She knew begging to be released wouldn’t work. Not after what happened to Allen. The only other choice was rescue. “Help!” she screamed, desperate to not have the same horrific fate, “Somebody help me! Please, help me! He’s going to kill me!”
That earned her a glare from her captor. She continued screaming, although the deeper into the forest they went, the dimmer her light of hope became. Her feet ached from the brush on the forest floor tearing at her flesh. Her arm felt as if it would be torn from the socket if she tried to struggle anymore. That’s when they reached a small open field. He tossed her to the ground. She scrambled to her knees, pushing her auburn hair out of her face.
“Stay!” his deep commanding voice startled her into submission.
A sound to her left sent hope soaring through her. “Help me, please!” She screamed despite her sore throat.
A squeal escaped her as strong arms hauled her back against a chest made of steel. A piece of cloth was shoved into her mouth distracting her from the realization of being so close to the man she was attracted to and feared all at once.
“You need to learn when to shut up.” He rasped in her ear.
In a blink, her hands and feet were bound with rope. Marlena turned her head, hoping beyond hope that he would see the fear in her face and let her go.
“I am not going to kill you, but I cannot let you go.”
He hauled her onto his shoulder, each step crushing the breath from her body. A whirring sound broke the night silence. Marlena saw lots of bright lights and metal. It seemed to be a factory or laboratory of sorts. At least that’s all she could make out hanging upside down. He dropped her into a small square room with a single odd shaped window.
“Scream all you want. No one can hear you.”
