He raised his fist and knocked on the door.
There were a few answering yips in response to the sound, and then a brief silence that seemed to last for a thousand years.
Finally, the doorknob clicked and the door opened just wide enough for a middle-aged shapeshifter to stick her head out through the gap. She wore a false smile on her face that quickly dropped away entirely when she saw who was standing there.
“Oh…”
Ash cleared his throat. “Mom.”
Ash’s mother just kept staring at them both for a very, very long moment. The omega was visibly pregnant now, and he smelled of not one, but two wolves. Her eyes flicked back and forth between alpha and omega, as if she was trying to piece together the story between them without hearing it from them.
Finally, all she said was, “I wasn’t expecting this.”
“Honestly, neither were we,” Ash said truthfully. “I would have told you sooner, if I’d known.”
Another silence fell between them, but this one was much shorter. “Is this your mate?”
“I am,” Linden said, as politely as he could. “Your son’s mate, and the father of your future grandchild.” Ash didn’t seem inclined to add anything, so he went on. “Ash and I are leaving. We’re…”
I never thought I would say these words.
“We’re heading off to start our own pack, in Montana. We bought a house there.”
Ash’s mother stared at him. He wondered if that was all she ever did, and how Ash could have ever stood to live with her.
Then, very slowly, as if it was some sort of miracle, she nodded. “Maybe you should come in and tell everyone that you’re going, yourself.
“We can’t, Mom.” Ash’s voice broke a little. “The ferry leaves in an hour. There’s not really enough time.”
Again, she nodded. It seemed now that she had forced herself to come to terms with what was happening, everything was a little easier. “In that case, we’ll come see you off. Just let me go grab your father.”
As she disappeared back inside the house, curious voices following her movement, Linden reached out to wrap his arms around the man he loved. They kissed softly, sharing their thoughts between them.
The future was ahead of them. Soon enough, they would both have everything they always needed.
