She was not going to get in the habit of having a dirty house, she knew that she did not want to turn this house into what she had grown up in. After she started the laundry she walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge. She smiled when she saw that he had even left her with a fridge full of food. There was a beep coming from the counter behind her and as she turned she saw that he had also gotten her a cell phone.

It said: 1 message from Dan. Lexi smiled to herself, she wondered if she could possibly be dreaming or if all of this actually was happening. The message read. “Make a list of the things you need, and I will get them tomorrow when I am done seeing patients. And no Lexi you are not my hoe, you are much more than that. Hopefully you can tell that by now.”

Lexi wanted to jump up and down. She wanted to show the entire world what he had messaged her, but knew that she couldn’t. She decided that it didn’t matter. She knew that she was his and that he was hers that was all that mattered. She also knew that a long as she was his she would have a warm bed to sleep in, food to eat and clean clothes to wear.

After she ate that night she lay in the softest bed she had ever felt, and for the first time was thankful for her life. She looked over to the other side of the bed and even though it was completely empty she knew that was just how she wanted it.

She knew that Dr. Dan was perfect for her. He already had a family so he would not be expecting her to ever be a mother, he was already married so she did not have to worry about being tied down to a man only to find out he was not what he claimed to be. He had a job and would make sure that she always had the things that she needed, which meant that the money that she earned was hers.

As she drifted off to bed that night she imagined all of the things that she was going to buy with the money that she had saved. The first thing was going to be a car. She knew she had enough to buy a nice used car and then she just wanted to shop. She wanted to experience what it was like to go into a store and buy whatever she wanted.

Lexi slept better that night than she had ever in her life. She did not have to worry about someone coming up on her in her sleep and she didn’t have to listen to screaming coming from her parents. Instead, she listened to the hum of the fan that sat next to her bed.

The next morning she woke up feeling completely refreshed and ready to start a new life. She got ready for work and headed out the door. When she arrived, she walked by the woman’s bathroom and smiled, knowing that she would never have to clean herself in there again. She walked to her register and there was a small envelope with her name on it. She opened it and found a piece of paper and a prepaid card.

The paper said. “Lexi this is so you can eat when you are at work, so you can shop when you want to and so you can get what you need when I am busy. If it is ever empty, just text me and I will put more money on it. – D”

Lexi smiled to herself. She could see herself falling in love with this man. She caught herself wondering if there was a chance that she could get him to leave his wife, but quickly forced the thought out of her head. She refused to be the woman on the side that was always trying to break up someone’s marriage. No, she decided that however long this deal lasted she was going to make the best of it. She was not going to let her heart get involved and refused to be hurt, but it was time for her to finally get a break in life and she was going to take full advantage of it.

She hoped that Dan would not bring too many of his friends over, but was also excited when she thought about all of the nice gifts she would be receiving. “Sure,” she thought to herself. “Some might think what I am doing is wrong, but they never slept on a park bench before.” She knew that if others found out about her deal they would call her nothing more than a slut but she knew better. What she was doing was so that she could better her own life, so she could finally have the things that she deserved and no one would make her feel bad for doing it.

Lexi started her shift with a smile on her face and for the first time she was actually looking forward to going home that night. She had no idea what the future held for her, but she knew it had to be better than what she had in the past.

  The Doctor and I

  The Doctor and I

  Chapter 1

I was nervous starting a new job. It wasn’t because I didn’t know what I was doing; it was because I’d finally left the only home I’d ever known just to get away from Jesse. After realizing the bastard was cheating on me, and still had the balls to put his hands on me, I finally woke up and realized I was a dumbass. For those few minutes, I allowed myself to wallow in my shame, and then I hardened my heart against men like Jesse—hell, men like anyone. I wouldn’t go down that road again.

So here I was in a new town, with a new job, starting over again. The town was much bigger than my old town, but I hoped that living in a bigger area would help me get lost in the sea of other people. I wanted to settle somewhere and make my life away from Jesse. I’d been lucky finding a new job so quickly. It was fate. I hadn’t met the new boss yet, but his old nurse wished me good luck. It sounded like he was demanding, which was no issue for me. I was a hard worker, and I loved working with patients. It was everyone else that was the problem.

I walked into the office and looked around the small waiting area. The doctor was a family physician and was one of the few that still took all types of insurance. His reputation around town was close to worship. Everyone loved Dr. Adams. He was a godsend. Seriously, I’d never heard so many people talk so highly of one man. I’d also learned that he was born and raised in Salexis, and was the town’s golden boy.

The bell above the door chimed and the cool air washed over me. It wasn’t even eight in the morning and I was sweating. It was hot as hell so the cool air was great.

“Hello?” I called. The office was silent. Shrugging my shoulders, I made my way down the hall until I came across a door with the doctor’s name. Without thinking, I opened the door and then, with wide eyes and a yell, jumped back, slamming the door. My face heated and I covered my eyes. Holy shit. I had just met my boss and saw him in all his naked glory. I’d only looked for a split second, but I would never forget his body. I tried and failed not to lick my lips. He was built, tan, and large—everywhere.

I stalked back the way I came and plopped down in one of the chairs trying to calm my racing heart. It was definitely not the way to meet the man, and I realized it was my fault. Of course, I hadn’t knocked. I don’t know why, but I guess now I understood why the door was shut with an empty office.

I kept my face covered, ignoring the heat, and I knew my cheeks probably matched my hair. I heard footsteps and a voice cleared. He was in front of me and I peeled my fingers away from my eyes and smiled sheepishly. “I’m so sorry.”

“That’s why the door was shut. Haven’t you heard of knocking?”

I heard more embarrassment than anger in his tone. “I know it was stupid, but I didn’t think—”

“No, you didn’t. Now, who the hell are you, and why did you think it was okay to walk into my office unannounced?”

I sat up and glared. I didn’t appreciate being talked to that way. “I’m Peyton Greene, Sir!”

He paled and stepped back. “Oh.”

“Yeah, ‘oh’. I said I was sorry, and be assured that it won’t happen again. So how about we start over like I didn’t just see all of you.” I scanned my eyes down his bod
y and did my best to make him uncomfortable. He talked down to me, and I’m capable of playing dirty. No man would disrespect me again. Especially for something that was an accident.

He nodded and kept his weary eyes on me. “I’m Dr. Kendrick Adams and your new boss,” he held out his hand and I recoiled.

“Sorry, don’t know if you washed them,” I replied with a smirk and chuckled when he glared.

“Of course I did. I’m not disgusting.”

I laughed again. “Sorry, that was the last one. Maybe. I’m Peyton Greene, and I’m your new nurse. I figured I’d show up early to see how things ran around here. Apparently, it’s pretty laid back.”

“I appreciate you com—showing up early. Things get hectic as soon as we open.”

“All right, Boss. Shall we?” I gestured for him to show me around.

I didn’t miss the heat in his eyes and rolled my eyes. I didn’t have time to stroke a man’s ego. I wanted to work, meet the patients, and go home to my new house and unpack. I’d only gotten into town late last night and needed to do a lot of work.

“I take a lot of the lower income families and the elderly. We accept walk-ins and I turn no one away.” The seriousness in his tone startled me. I wasn’t surprised. I’d heard he was one of the best doctors in the country.

  “That’s great.”

“Thanks, I work hard to make sure that everyone is seen. There are too many people who get turned away. It’s my way of giving back, I guess. I grew up here, and I know what it’s like to be poor.”

I felt my smile widen. “I love that. My last office wasn’t so… kind or caring. In fact, I was blessed to find this opening when I did. I was glad to leave.”

“Why’s that? Something tells me you left more than a job behind.”

“Yep, and no, I don’t know you enough to talk about it—and just because I saw your junk doesn’t mean we’re besties now.”

He rolled his eyes. “You’re gonna let me live that down, right? I’m a man who works a lot of hours. Sometimes I need a relief. It’s natural.”

“Oh I know. Wasn’t the best first impression though. Makes you seem like a sex addict if you have to do it in the office before the day even starts.”

  “You’re not wrong.”

I stumbled as he walked away chuckling. I wasn’t even sure if he was serious, but he didn’t give me a chance to ask. I hadn’t expected him be so—open. I shook my head. He was messing with me.

  Chapter 2

Kendrick smiled when she stumbled. She’d thrown him off the moment he heard her tiny gasp when she’d caught him in the middle of getting off. Instead of chasing her, he finished. She wasn’t wrong about him. He was a very sexual man, and no one got in the way of his release. He should probably remember to lock his office from now on. Apparently his new nurse didn’t think knocking was important.

She was hot as hell. She had that stern, sexy librarian thing going on. Her red hair was bright, long and slicked back into a tight ponytail on top of her head. Mixed with her bright green eyes covered by glasses, she was most men’s version of a wet dream. He struggled being around her. She smelled delicious and looked amazing with her large tits and a big ass that he’d love to spank. He wondered how long it would be before he would bag her, then run her off since he didn’t do relationships. She’d feel jilted. He shook his head. He didn’t fuck women in town—ever. So he sure as hell wouldn’t bag his new nurse, no matter how sexy he found her. People in town didn’t know about his private life, and he kept it that way for a reason.

As far as everyone was concerned he was the best doctor around, and he didn’t date. Everyone knew that. He never brought women home. None even knew where he lived. He was smart about his extracurricular activities. He’d do well to remember she was now a woman from town—meaning off limits. He sighed in relief. He kept to his rules easy, so it wouldn’t be hard to keep his hands to himself.

“I am usually booked from open to close six days a week. Thursdays I’m never here. It’s my one day off. Leslie usually worked a few hours just in case. I don’t expect you to do that. She only did that because she needed the money, and she grew up here and loves the people.”

“I can do that too if you want. I love helping people and since I don’t know anyone it’s not like I have any hot dates or anything.”

He heard the bitterness in her tone and realized she’d been burned recently. “I see. Well, not until I trust you. Maybe after a couple of weeks. For now let’s just see how this is going to work. I need to know how well we’ll be able to work together.”

“Fair enough. I want you to know that I take my work very seriously, and I shouldn’t have given you a hard time earlier. It was disrespectful. I guess it just surprised me to see something so private.”

Kendrick was surprised. Most women didn’t admit when they were wrong. He felt a stirring in his pants and wanted to groan. Apparently his body liked it too. Damn, she was going to make his life more difficult. “It’s okay. We can move on and see how you fit in around here. This town isn’t small, but everyone here still pretty much knows everyone else. It’s one of those kinds of towns. Newbies don’t always get accepted.” And yes, he realized how much of an ass he was being.

The happiness he saw forming behind her eyes fled, and she frowned. “Oh, well okay. I guess we’ll see.” She shoved invisible strands of hair from her face. “So uh, what do you want me to do this morning?”

“Just clean the rooms up and make sure everything has been sanitized. Leslie usually does, but I like to double-check. Better safe than sorry.” Then he walked away, leaving her to figure it out. Taking a deep breath, he felt her eyes boring into his back. If she didn’t like him, then it could work right? He glared down at his rising erection. He really didn’t think he had a problem. Normally, he was more controlled.

She didn’t call for him or anything. Instead, he heard her huff. He shouldn’t have been so rude, but at that moment, he needed to get away. When he went into his office he shut the door, this time locking it. He slumped in his chair and closed his eyes, taking deep breaths.

Kendrick didn’t like how he felt. She got a rise out of him that he hadn’t felt before, and he wasn’t sure what to do about it. But it was only the first day, and she’d caught him in the middle of something very private. That was the problem. She’d seen him butt naked, and she didn’t stare. Instead, she covered her face and ran away. It might have been a burst to his ego. He worked hard to keep his body in tip-top condition and every woman loved it.

After composing himself, he did his normal routine. He checked each of the rooms to make sure they were set up how he liked them. Peyton moved fast. By the time he got to the last room she was already up front cleaning the waiting area. She moved furiously, and he could see the tension in how she stood with a rigid back.

  “You did well.”

She spun and glared. “Yippee for me.” Then she went back to work, dismissing him. He knew he’d pissed her off and he didn’t apologize easily.

So instead he ran a hand through his styled blond hair, messing it up. “It’s time to open. Jazzy should be here soon to man the desk.”

“Okay, where do I need to be?”

  He shrugged. “In your office.”

  “I have an office? Why?”

“Everyone needs their own space. It’s small, but it’s yours. It’s the room next to mine.”

“Okay, well I’ll excuse myself now until it’s time for the first appointment. I’m a nurse. I know what to do.”

“Jazzy can show you the set-up for charts.”

“Fine,” she replied and then stalked past him.

Her shoulder brushed against his arm and the scent of her perfume lingered in the air. He took in a breath and let it out. It was faint. He liked how she didn’t douse herself like a lot of women chose to do. He liked the natural scent of a woman.

  Chapter 3

The day went smoothly. I met so many people, was told so many names, tha
t my head literally spun. There weren’t any more uncomfortable encounters, and Kendrick and I were cordial to one another. No one would ever guess that I already hated their golden boy. He was an ass. I didn’t deserve to be treated so poorly, and I was starting to second-guess my move. I’d moved specifically to Salexis because of the job offer. There was nothing else tying me to the town.

As horrible as it sounded, I’d be taking Thursdays to explore and see what other options were there for me. I wouldn’t stay at a place where I wasn’t welcome. He’d made it perfectly clear that I probably wouldn’t be. So far everyone had been nice, but that didn’t mean anything. I’d learned long ago, not to trust the first meeting. It’s why I hoped things between the doctor and I would smooth out. He was probably embarrassed I’d caught him in such an… intimate position.

At five, when the last patient left, I went back to each room and cleaned them, much like I had in the morning. I was in my own little world until I felt his stare. I didn’t even bother giving him my attention. I had a job to do and I’d finish it. When he cleared his throat, I sighed but still kept cleaning. I’d just finished up the room and grabbed the cleaning bucket. When I went to leave, he blocked my path. Glaring at his chest, I licked my lips and tried to squeeze around him, but I was no bean pole. I had curves at every turn, and he was not a small man. He was nearly a foot taller than me and built like a fucking linebacker. Okay, so I was exaggerating, he was built though.

“Excuse me,” I said and moved over to the other side, hoping he would let me go. I was tired, hungry, and a little put off by him. I also hated how hard it was not to watch him when he was nearby. He was sexy, and I couldn’t get the lines of his abs out of my head. His body was lickable. It had been far too long since I’d actually wanted sex, but he made me think dirty things, which only pissed me off.
