The Agreement
The ship rocked. Entering from the Black Sea in Varna lake, a tanker formed waves. Gosho "Bazila" woke up with the moon's rays in his face which passed through the round window of his cabin. He reached, took the bottle of rum and drank the last drop. He managed, however, to awake and want to drink even more. The seawolf passed the gangway and continued on the concrete playground. He headed towards the reed to take a leak. The moon was the only light source here, and she shone the wooden bridge, penetrating a dozen meters into the lake.
Gosho stopped and went numb. He heard a sound resembling a mix of children crying, whistling wind and the screams of a killer whale. The Bazil felt the need to quickly get out of there. He tried to make a move but felt that his body was blocked, apparently mesmerized by something. He then slightly tilted his body back and with great effort pulled his right leg backward. Then managed to move the other one, and before turning to the left, saw an illuminated part of a tail dive into the water towards him. Now with his back to the water, the first steps were also very difficult. At one point, he finally managed to pull himself together and quickened his pace.
In the morning arrived Ivan "The Ninth", Vasil "Fantomas", Pisco, wacky professor Parlatov and his son, Valeri. On the ship, the engineer, Lyudtskanov, and Gosho met them. They sat down at the table and pulled out some maps while drinking coffee.
“Bazil, you look like piss geraniums. Wasn’t the rum enough?” Asked Pisco.
“I went for rum but quickly came back.”
“Why?” Wondered Ivan. “Are you quitting alcohol?”
“Ivan, come on, let’s be serious. I could have died tonight. Still, I had heard stories from old sailors about mermaids, but last night, I met the devil!” Gosho described the incident in detail.
“When you went for more rum, how many bottles had you already drank?” Vasil joked.
“What bottles? One sip was left on the bottom. I’m not kidding!”
“Currently, there are Russian and NATO ships in the Black Sea. Both sides held military maneuvers with military bottlenose dolphins and sea lions. American dolphins tested the new radar detectors, which should "wrong the enemy echolocators while sea lions look for mines and military divers". This is for the world, but do you know what new psychotronic weapons or technology they are testing? You were most likely an accidental target of such an experiment.”
“I think it was a mermaid, fucking…”
“Serious topics are being discussed this morning,” engineer Lyudtskanov finally joined. “Tell me what happened with the radar and the scanner I ordered?”
“In a few days, they will be delivered, and you will be given a chance to install and test them,” answered Ivan. “The whole equipment will arrive shortly. Don’t worry, everything was imported from Germany.”
The mad engineer happily rubbed his hands together and sipped his coffee with a smile.
***
Two weeks earlier...
Tiberius smoked on his cigar with narrowed calculating eyes.
“Gentlemen, I have an interesting proposition for you. Since you have experience in finding artifacts and you are switching to this type of activity, I think you are the people who will do the job,” here the Jew looked at his daughter.
The young girl started talking, “When I was a child, I was adopted, and I received an inheritance from my parents, something that not everyone would appreciate. You’ve already discovered one metal disk. I have the information on the second one.”
Professor’s eyes opened wide with interest and Tiberius continued in turn, “Unfortunately, the maps we have are indecipherable, and the writings from Natasha’s parents' diary can not be read, as it is written in non-existent language. Something like the "Voynich manuscript", which has not been decipherеd to this date. We will provide all the information and Countess Nikolaevna will help you. If you find the second disk, I will pay you ten million euros. Everything else is for you. Do you agree with my proposal?”
Ivan apparently cleared his throat and spoke, “Isn’t there something in cash for the moment?”
The Jew grinned and handed them a briefcase, “I have prepared a million plus for you, to move more smoothly into the water. If you need anything, call me. I guess you will find a room for Natasha?”
The Ninth shifted, “Naturally, we will give her some personal space. Welcome to the brigade.”
The girl smiled, “After it’s official, will you tell one of the guards to bring down my suitcases from the helicopter?”
“Of course,” Valeri replied, and personally took care of it.
Chapter II
Bon Voyage
Two weeks later, on the ship...
“Father, I can not stay and do nothing anymore. If you want to continue to decipher the language in the notebook that’s fine but we will move. I plan to sail close to the shore to see if any of the drawings will match the cliffs.”
Lyudtskana, still drinking coffee, turned to Bazil, “Gosho, unless you are afraid of mermaids, start the engines and lets sail out.”
“Which way?” asked the sailor and turned towards the captain. “Valeri, Turkey or Romania?”
“We will sail to Kaliakra, so head north. We sail close to the coast, no more than a mile.”r />
“Yes, Captain.”
The research boat left the harbor, and with a constant speed of ten knots, it took the course. They watched the drawings and tried to link them to the natural resources of the land. Nearing the rocks of Kaliakra, however, Ivan spotted something among the cliffs through his binoculars. It was an outlined hieroglyph which existed in the notebook.
“Professor, isn’t this familiar?” He handed the binoculars to the wacko and showed him where to look.
“Oho, isn’t this Kaliakra?”
“You’re killing me. It’s Kaliakra of course! But don’t you see the rocks that I’m pointing at? Isn’t there something you recognize from the notebook? The coastal maps for example?”
With the binoculars, Parlatov looked at the place. He licked the thumb on his left hand, then grabbed the book and began leafing through it with the right. He stopped at a certain page and took off his glasses to clean them.
“Yes, it is 1:1. Watch, watch. Ah, just to be able to read what was written underneath. Everything meets. Here, this curve I’m looking over there, it is the same. There is no mistake, we are close to something. People, this is a clue. Stop the ship for a moment, I don’t want to miss the spot.”
The professor impatiently paced back and forth until the ship anchored and the boat was dropped into the sea. He entered the vessel and sailed to the rocks. The cliffs were unapproachable, high tens of meters. The sea was peaceful, and the group was able to get close to them. There was about a meter wide strip on which the wacko began to walk and do some drawings and studies.
They pulled the dinghy and went down after the professor to help. On the whole coast, no longer than 50 meters, there was no visible sign of human intervention.
“Are we missing something?” Asked Pisco.
“Good things happen slowly!” The professor immediately shouted at him. “Look for unusual projections, smooth places, holes, signs and the like.”
Fantomas reached the end of the beach, but seeing that the water was no deeper than half a meter, he decided to move on to where he could. At some point, the rocks slightly projected towards the sea and then, with a slight kink, concaved again. Vasco wondered whether to circumvent them, but something prompted him to do it, and he continued. It suddenly became shallow, even some of the stones were over the water and he slipped and fell sideways after stepping on them.
“Fuck his mother, I soaked my cigarettes. Where the fuck am I going?” The former prisoner started swearing and stared blankly toward the rocks. “Ohoo, what do we have here? Professor,” he shouted, “come now, I think I found something!”
Parlatov appeared and carefully walked around the ledge whose inner end was engraved with ancient Bulgarian runes. Read the inscription aloud, “Bolgar.”
“What Bolgar, did you forget the Bulgarian language?”
“That’s written on the rock, this was at some point the capital of Volga Bulgaria, located in present-day Russia.”
“And what does it mean?”
“It means that we pack our bags and head for the old capital.”
They returned to the ship, and the professor began to explain, “We found mysterious sign "Bolgar" simply by following the drawings in the notebook. We have another drawing, however, and it does not meet the contours of this coast. As you know, Bolgar lies on the banks of the great river Volga. I think the second map is for there.”
“And what, we will seek the disc in the Volga?” Ivan asked in surprise.
“When we unravel the second partial map, we will know for sure.”
Valeri gave a reverse course to the Varna lake. At nightfall, they tied the ropes on the dock and left for the villa. For dinner, they sat hungry at the table and, later on, the Countess joined with a bottle of vodka. She greeted them,, “Have you found anything?”
“Yes!” Exclaimed the professor. “We will visit Bolgar in Russia. Your parents were really on the right track. The clues lead us to the banks of the Volga. I guess you will be interested in visiting your homeland? Do you have friends there?”
“I corresponded with one of the orphans in the past. He was like a brother to me. I can get him to meet us in Moscow.”
“And visas for Russia?” Asked Pisco.
“I have a friend in the Russian embassy. He will arrange them!” Ivan answered. “All I have to do is catch him sober!”
The hired waitress served them appetizers and poured vodka into their glasses. The professor even ordered a freshly squeezed grapefruit, only without a straw this time.
“Where are we going to sleep there?” Asked with interest Fantomas.
“In a hotel, but we must be careful not to make acquaintance with some thick Matryoshka this time.”
“Aaa, this time we won’t mix alcohol with drugs,” said Pisco. “I don’t want to reincarnate again!”
“A wise decision!” Ivan grinned. “Just try not to start drink on the plane...”
“I doubt we will endure so much. Fantomas will probably be drunk on the way to the airport. You know he has a fear of heights.”
Chapter III
Russia
After a week, upon leaving the airport in Moscow, met them Alyosha. The boy from the orphanage had become a strong man with a fierce expression. They embraced with Natasha, and she presented the group. Everybody sat in two large G-Class Mercedes’s and drove to his villa as they were cordially invited to spend the night.
The Russian was known among the underground for driving his car by himself, despite his financial capabilities. He liked to do work personally and did not trust anyone. His villa, located on the outskirts of the city, didn’t have the glamor of the Italian palaces, but what ours noticed was that there was no security.
The tough gangster pressed a button on the steering wheel of the car and a big iron door opened. Both jeeps parked in the yard and the group entered. Inside, the house was decorated with thousands of antiques. The professor enthusiastically walked in the corridors, looking at the exhibits, "Is this the storage for the Hermitage?"
Alyosha tried to smile politely and said, “I’m a collector!”
Settling in at the table, Ivan said, “We will have you in mind. We are archaeologists,” he took himself seriously with his usual arrogant radiation, which was already known in Italy.
The Russian poured vodka and served pickles and caviar. After the toast, he asked Natasha, “Remember the jars of pickles in the basement?”
She looked cute and took a sip with satisfaction from the cup, “How can I forget? It was a great hunger!”
“Are you going on excavations in Bolgar? Do you need transportation? Locals can make problems if you don’t have friends among them,” winked Alyosha.
While eating its cucumbers, Ivan intervened, “Will ten thousand euro be enough to cover the bill? The costs are not included.”
“Okay, I’ll drive one Mercedes, and you the second one.”
They shook hands and continued with the dinner.
In the morning, the group left the estate as they had about 1000 km to drive. Ivan was driving close to the Russian, passing villages, forests, and cities. In the afternoon, they turned to eat at some restaurant on the outskirts of the town of Staraya Maina, which was already close to Bolgar.
An hour later, already rested, they headed for the G-Class.
“Fuck his mother,” Pisco slapped his forehead. “Somebody stole the cars!”
“Oh, come on!” Said the professor. “My umbrella was inside...”
“I will fix this misunderstanding!” Muttered Alyosha, dialing his phone.
In a local garage, two dark subjects had already opened the lid of their new possession and were going to begin to dismantle them when one’s phone rang. Someone gave them an order and hung up.
“Who was it?” Asked one of the car thieves.
“Close the hood. We screwed up. Do you know to whom those cars belong?
“No, is it Putin?”
“Worse! Alyosha from Moscow. They’ll break o
ur eggs.”
“Oh, then it’s good we haven’t dismantled them yet. We have to return the cars to the place with an apology.”
The two Chechens got into the Mercedes’s and drove back to Alyosha. They got out of the vehicles and handed an envelope with money.
“This is our monthly earnings. Accept our apologies.”
Muscovite adroitly took the envelope, squeezed one of the Chechens by the neck and said, “You are lucky, dogs, that I served in the army with Ilyata. Disappear from my sight before I change my mind.”
The group got into the G-classes and set off with a dirty gas to Bolgar. On the way, the Russian thought and memories from the army seized him. Ilyata was an old fighter when Alyosha was assigned to his sentry. On New Year’s Eve in 00:00, sounded the sirens of ships. The sky was lit by fireworks. Head guard Peychev, who had served one year in the parachute regiment with Ilyata, stood at the window of the sentry house and called the new fighter.
“Watch brother!”
Alyosha looked at the barracks. At a pile of rubble, he saw Ilyata, who was there on duty, drink a bottle of vodka in a single gulp. So he welcomed the new year. Then his silhouette slid on the stones unconscious...
“Now rookie, run to change him, we are without a guard.”
The young fighter willingly took over because the old sleeping soldier had done much for him. He had saved his life more than once…
The two jeeps stopped in front of Hotel Regina in Bolgar, and Ilyata was waiting for them personally with a few Mercedes around. He was about six feet tall, slightly humbed, broad-shouldered, with a blank look. No one has solved his thoughts yet. The two shook hands and embraced in typical gangster style. Guards were sealed off the entire area.
“I have reserved rooms at the hotel. If you need anything, you know my number. The two car thieves work for me, leave them, let them breathe.”
