"This is all my fault. I knew I was putting her in danger coming back. Hell, I've lost everyone I've ever loved."
"You saved her"
"She would have never been in this situation if it wasn't for me."
"Yeah. She'd probably still be stuck in an abusive relationship."
The conversation between Jason and Tom is what I hear when I finally start to wake up. My eyes open and it takes me a second to figure out what I’m looking at. Jason's chest, still wearing the bloody t-shirt. I finally realized what I should’ve earlier. The blood is red, not black. It’s mine, not his.
"So I guess it worked?" I ask, and Jason loosens his hold on me until I’m looking up at his face.
"Thank God!" he says, relief showing on his beautiful face before he leans down to kiss my forehead. His arms tightening around me.
"What about the baby?" I ask.
"We're taking you home and flying Dr. Wilson in."
"Is everyone else okay?" I ask, and he clenches his jaw.
"Chase was shot and Joselin had to heal him with her blood. But it took so much…he was um, turned."
"My brother's a vampire now?"
"Yeah."
"How's he doing with it? Is Connor okay?"
"He's glad to be alive, but a little pissed he has to add blood to his diet. Connor is fine. Both of them are worried about you."
"What happened?"
"That asshole apparently has been in town looking for you, and when he saw us he reported us to the D.R.A. for the reward. I think he was trying to get you out of the way, but that didn't work out very well for him."
"So Mitch, he-he's dead?"
"Yeah, and I'm sorry it came to that. Sebastian's message was telling us that Emily wouldn't have made it if Tom or Joselin had tried to turn you."
"Emily?" I ask with a smile.
"Ah yeah," he says with an adorable smile. "That's the name I've been thinking of, and what Sebastian called her too when I just talked to him. So I guess it's going to stick. What do you think?"
"I love the name Emily, and I love you."
"Good, and I love you too," he says with a kiss.
"So now what?" I ask.
"Joselin had to vampire mind trick some agents and officers, a few neighbors, but your brothers and parents should be fine to stay where they are."
"I guess we won't be getting married?"
"I promise you we are going to get married. I'm just sorry it won't be at your grandmother's house, but we can't stay here any longer."
"I know."
"How about we all head to one of those all-inclusive island resorts, invite your family to join us, and have one of those destination weddings?" Jason asks, making me laugh.
"You have been paying attention to the wedding shows I watch! And I think that's a great idea."
"I can't wait to marry you, and spend the rest of our long, long life together," he says before giving me a head spinning kiss.
Epilogue
"Wow, Jason! This is amazing," I tell him as he carries me in his arms over the threshold of our private bungalow. One that’s sitting on pillars and surrounded by the calm Caribbean Sea, the same beautiful color as his eyes.
"It is. And it even has preselected music choices," Jason says with a smirk before laying me down in the middle of the huge canopy bed, still in my wedding gown. There’s just a small bump showing under my strapless white satin, empire waist dress, but I’m only three months along. We’re so thankful that Emily is growing healthier every day.
Heading to the stereo Jason grabs the remote and suddenly Marvin Gaye is singing to us about needing sexual healing. I giggle as I watch Jason strip slowly and seductively out of his tux. As happy and carefree as he’s been the last few weeks, it’s easy to forget he’s not actually the twenty-one-year-old man he appears to be. He’s an old soul, my soulmate, and the man I get to spend the rest of my long life with.
